About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, 10 Sleeps

Hale o Lei is a charming, private 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath beach house across the street from Kealakekua Bay, in quaint, historical, alternately bustling and serene Napo'opo'o Village. Our home is perfect for enjoying the uniqueness of this area and the Big Island. Hale o Lei has both inside and open-air living and dining areas, private master bedroom suite, outside spa and shower, a sunning deck, and 2 lanais facing the ocean. It is screened to allow you to enjoy the ocean breezes. We have completely outfitted Hale o Lei so that you will feel like you are coming home. It is about 100 feet from the kayak launching pier, a short walk to Manini and Keei Beaches, a one mile kayak to the Captain Cook Monument, a short drive to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (The Place of Refuge), and right at some of the best snorkeling and spinner dolphin watching in Hawaii. We are eager to help in any way to make this your best vacation experience ever!

For a full Big Island experience, combine your visit with Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray House), our wheelchair accessible oceanfront home south of Hilo (#7030479)

About Hart or Marlene Phillips

Aloha! We moved the Big Island in 2001 because we had traveled widely and this place provided us with the culture, scenery, and overall environment that fit us well. For many years, we lived right up the hill from Hale o Lei, in Kona Coffee Country. Now, we live Puna-side and are loving it there, too. Very special Island!!

Hart or Marlene Phillips purchased this house in 2005

Why Hart or Marlene Phillips chose Kona Coast

Kealakekua Bay has perhaps the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii. We have equipped our home to support this activity, as well as having a comfortable base to do anything you want. It is truly a home away from home, as you can see from our ratings.

What makes this house unique

Well situated, well equipped, well located, comfortable, enjoyable. We also have an oceanfront vacation home on the other side of the island (Hale Ehu Kai #7030479) and many people stay with us on both sides of the Big Island.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We’ve really enjoyed our stay here- love the upstairs bedroom with the ocean view and “jungle” bird songts. This is a comfortable home with all the amenities one could ask for.

My husband highly recommends the Manta Ray dive. “Other Worldly!” Mahalo

A comfortable retreat in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed at Hale o Lei for one week and had an amazing time. The house had plenty of room, comfortable beds and was very well appointed, especially the kitchen. Hart was excellent about communicating and making sure we were comfortable.

The proximity of the house to Kealakekua Bay made for very easy access to the best snorkeling on the island. My kids loved watching the resident geckos hunt insects. If you're looking for true adventure, Hale o Lei is the place.

Great location, well stocked!

  • 5 of 5

For the location and price its definitely a 5-star to us--we loved the place and the pictures are accurate. The location is farther from the highway than "as the crow flies" would indicate--good for getting away, not so good for getting a carton of POG. The house is well stocked with snorkel gear, boogie boards, and kitchen items. We probably saved $250 on rental gear! Hart and Marlene were very responsive to questions and advice. Great location for exploring the rest of the island. Take the southern route to the volcano!

Amazing indoor outdoor experience - Mahalo

  • 4 of 5

With no windows and a metal roof we were fully in touch with the outdoors. It rained lightly every day and the sounds were amazing. The huge mango tree produced mangoes every day that fell on the lawn. We had mango smoothies every day. Lots of space every where. The living room kitchen and dinning area is all adjacent each other and open for close conversations. Two covered outdoor sitting areas were great for sitting out in the rain. No windows actually worked well. With ceiling fans in every room and sitting space, I enjoyed listening to the outdoors and staying cool. A few of the screens needed some repairs which let a few mosquitoes in, but overall worked well. We did have to keep bug spray on not to get bit, because they did get in.

The location of the house is very nice. Two doors down there is a old boat dock that one can jump in and begin snorkeling. lots of fish in Kealakekua bay. About a mile down the road is Manini beach, which is rough on your feet, but the kids really enjoyed swimming and exploring there. Being in the Kealakekua bay was nice, because you are among the locals. The disadvantage was that the windy road up to the highway adds 25 minutes to your travels, and the grocery store was 30 minutes to the house. Captain Cooks monument, which is why many come to this location has gone downhill over the last 2 decades. The owner of Kona Boys kayaks lives 2 doors down (very nice people). We rented kayaks at his launching point a mile from the house and visited Captain Cooks monument for snorkeling, but even with all the new restrictions and permits the seen is crowded with large tour boats and dozens of kayaks floating over the coral. To the south a single lane road (30 minutes) takes you to Pae'a (aka "Two Step"), which is amazing snorkeling with great variety of fish and large. This would be the snorkeling site to go to more than once.

Overall, we were happy with the house. It is an older house and some thing need maintenance, like sticky bathroom doors, slow shower head, and openings in some screens. I have emailed the owners and hopefully they will make some repairs. All that being said, I would recommend staying at Hale o Lei for a more down to earth local Hawaii experience.

Owner's Response: We are appreciative that this guest enjoyed his time at Hale o Lei! Also that he gave us feedback on a few things we can attend to next week. The daily rain during his visit he mentioned encourages mosquitos to come out more than normal (especially at sunset). That's why we provide an inside "bug zapper", bug spray, outside mosquito coils, citronella candles, and a sealed glass front door guests can use (instead of the screen door they evidently used). There were no holes in screens a couple of weeks ago, part of vacation rental wear and tear, I guess. All items he mentioned will be history next week.

Exactly as advertised!

  • 5 of 5

From the beginning, the owner kindly responded to emails/phone calls very promptly. He also provided us with a great list of suggested places to visit.

This home is comfortable, in a great location and has everything one can need. The kitchen was stocked with plenty of items to easily prepare meals. I was worried about having mostly screened in windows thinking it may get too hot or too cold. We lucked out with the weather and enjoyed a cool ocean breeze, plus falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean was amazing. The home was clean, had plenty of linens, beach toys and outing items, i.e. cooler, picnic basket, blue ice, etc. There is a small, slightly rocky beach within a 2 minute walk, great for taking an easy dip. We enjoyed 'two steps' a few miles away, a trip to the Big Island Honey Bee Farm only minutes away, drove to the volcano, went to the seahorse farm and enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor living room this home has. The home has a great layout, plenty of room to relax and enjoy. There is great outdoor space that is comfortable...just watch out for the mosquitos, but like everything else the owner has prepared for this with bug spray and candles to repel them. I would definitely return for another visit. Thank you!
