House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, Sleeps 7
We would love to share our 'Up North' getaway with people who
appreciate a well kept home with full amenities. As you stroll down
our winding driveway, watch for the deer and wildlife in the woods.
When you're finished taking in the view of Lake Michigan and the
Manitou Islands from the living room, step outside to the patio and
head down the boardwalk through the sandy dune grasses and
wildflowers to our own private beach on Sleeping Bear Bay on Lake
Our 4 bedroom, 3 bath home is within walking distance of Glen Arbor
(1/2 mile). The master bedroom, with a lovely view of the lake and
the Manitou Islands, includes a king size bed and a private bath.
Also on the lower level are two other bedrooms, one with two twin
beds and the other with one twin bed, which share a bathroom.
Upstairs is a bedroom with two twin beds, a twin futon (best for young teen or child) and a
bathroom. The home includes new flooring throughout
Thistledown is located 30 minutes from Traverse City, the Cherry
Capital of the Midwest. The Traverse City Airport offers service
from several major airlines. And of course, for your cherry product
needs, walk or bike into town to The Cherry Republic.

About the Owner
Thistledown has been a family home for several generations. Dave and Ann live in Florida most of the year, but we love to come back to Glen Arbor and the peaceful views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. Marcia lives in St. Louis and loves getting together with her family in Glen Arbor. We all enjoy getting our family together at Thistledown and making memories.
Guestbook comments from the owner
2 1/2 year old Clara (our granddaughter) had a wonderful time at Thistledown! A few weeks after arriving back home, she asked her daddy, "Daddy, where's Michigan? I NEED MY Michigan!" Yes, Clara, we all feel that way!

Loved Thistledown for our Family vaca
We stayed at Thistledown for Labor Day 2015's long weekend. Ann was great to work with and had great communication throughout our entire booking process. Thistledown is in a great location and we biked to and from downtown Glen Arbor. We loved the house and its beach. We had bonfires each night and drank wine, watching the sunset from the beach and patio. We traveled to and from the surrounding cities, the dunes, traverse city and the sand bar about 10 min from house. I would recommend this home and vacation stay for any family. Thanks Ann and Family for sharing your home with us.
Charming Lake Mich getaway in Glen Arbor!
Gorgeous property with beautiful views of Sleeping Bear Bay and the Manitou Islands. great beach and plenty of room for everyone. Tastefully updated and great layout for privacy. Walls of windows. Big dining table for the family. The kitchen was so well stocked that we prepared a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings! Quick walk or bike into Glen Arbor. Ann went out of her way to communicate promptly and make sure the driveway was plowed in case of snow. The home was heated upon our arrival on a cold night and wood was stocked for the fireplace. Thistledown is a charming and ideal getaway for all seasons!
Ideal waterfront location.
Property is in immaculate condition and provides guests with numerous homelike amenities. The owner provided us with a list of local restaurants and sights to visit during our stay. We enjoyed them all. We would heartily recommend Thistledown to family, friends, and anyone wanting to experience the Lake Michigan shoreline.
A little slice of heaven!
If you like nature, unadulterated, in the form of deer, hummingbirds, hawks, the occasional bald eagle and even a fox around sunset; if you enjoy playing at (or in) one of the greatest bodies of fresh water on earth; if you like the simplicity of bonfires by the beach and a charming 'up north' style village just down the road, then this classic A-Frame is ideal. There is a 'just us' feeling that's pretty special. The accommodations are rustic with a modern touch - connectivity & on demand. The owners are trusting and I dare say generous people - for even renting at all! If, however, you prefer a resort style vacation with plenty of fanfare, then it might not be right for you.
We love this place. It's on opportunity to re-connect with our elemental selves, and we wait all year for the next opportunity to visit. It's a genuinely captivating place with a northerly view of the Sleeping Bear Bay and the Manitou Islands. The lake has a thousand faces and in a week you see a few. In time, you might just see them all.
Slice of Heaven
Our family has been visiting Glen Arbor for the past 30 + years and Thistledown is like a 2nd home to us. When we finally reach the lane, I feel that I can "breathe", once again. There is nothing better than sitting in front of a roaring fire, watching the "nature channel" through the big, glass slider doors. Walks on the beach are almost a religious experience and you never know what the "Lady of the Lake" has in store for you from walk to walk. The house is fully equipped with everything anyone could possibly want or need, but it's the atmosphere that brings us back year after year. It truly is a little slice of heaven and I would highly recommend it to all - young and old! That said, just leave us our 2 weeks :-)
You can't go wrong
My wife and I first rented Thistledown six years ago. We have been coming back at least once a year ever since. We had vacationed on the Leelanau for over ten years before finding Thistledown, but rarely rented the same place more than once. Some rentals were too small, some too rundown, some too rustic (middle of nowhere), and some had owners who wouldn't give you the time of day once the check cleared. Then we found Thistledown. The house itself is a very clean, well maintained A frame only a few hundred feet from the shore of Lake Michigan - the Manitou Passage to be precise - which means if you walk down to the shore (something you will do every evening because every Lake Michigan sunset is unique and glorious) you see the Great Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes to the left, the two Manitou Island directly across the water, and to the right, the town of Glen Arbor nestled in the woods below Pyramid Point.
My wife and I go for the peace, the quiet, the magnificent views, the local restaurants – including La Becasse if you have a hankering for escargot, creme brulee and trying to remember your very bad high school French – and the wines. Not to mention the morning coffee from Leelanau Coffee Roasting, the mid-afternoon sour cherry patches from Cherry Republic, and the evening burgers from Art’s Tavern, all three a fifteen minute stroll away in Glenn Arbor. Should you be there ‘with child’ you’ve got the dune climb a five minute drive in the opposite direction, kayak and bike rentals in Glen Arbor, ice cream at the Republic and cokes and a brew for you) at the Tavern. And then, of course, there is the beach, a scant two hundred feet away.
The property shows pride of ownership – it is well maintained and updated. A new air conditioner appeared recently, as well as a new living room set and wooden living room floor. The kitchen has all the modern amenities, and they work (unlike some places we’ve rented)! The bedrooms range in size from ‘master’ to cozy nook, and include a genuine knotty-pine man-cave at the top of the ‘A’, guaranteed to attract boys of any age (I’ve slept there myself a few times). The house even has wireless internet service for those of you needing a daily Facebook fix or to respond to an occasional emergency from work.
In short, you can’t go wrong. A week at Thistledown is one of the high points of our year. I hope it will be for yours as well.
