House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps
Oceanfront Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray House) allows you to enjoy Hawaii at its best!! The view as you come in the front door is like you are on a boat, without the rocking. It is centrally located between the resident turtles (Humphrey, Hilda, and baby Hubert), dolphins, whales,
cruise ships, and other wild life in your front yard and the wonders of East Hawaii in your back yard. Kapoho warm pond and Champagne Pond, Lava Trees State Park, and some of the newest beaches in the world are within a few miles. Volcanoes National Park and Hilo are
30-45 minutes away. Spectacular waterfalls and scenery of the Kohala Coast and Waipio Valley are beyond Hilo.
It is truly a place where you can choose the pace of your vacation!
You can relax and enjoy the ocean from the spa, on the huge 12'x40'
deck, or in the house or you can explore the Big Island by driving,
bicycling, or hiking. Nearby, funky Pahoa Town has outstanding and
varied restaurants and shops. Snorkeling and surfing are nearby, but
not at the house.
It is wheelchair accessible so everyone can enjoy it's magnificent
setting, with a ramp, lever-type door and bathroom handles, wide pocket doors,
roll-in shower with fixed and hand held shower heads and grab bars. It is also a non-smoking house. We have completely outfitted Hale Ehu Kai so that you will feel like you are coming home to paradise! Marlene has included everything you
could ever need in the kitchen (as more than one visitor has said, 'if
you can't find it--just look harder').
Remember!! You also can combine your stay with the owner's Kona-side vacation rental at Kealakekua Bay, Hale o Lei (#22776) for a total Big Island experience (and a 'package-price' rate).
About the Owner
About Hart or Marlene Phillips
Aloha! Marlene and I retired to the Big Island in 2001 because of it's wonderful people and diverse scenery. Prior to that, Marlene was a teacher and I was a human relations manager/consultant for many years. We had always loved the Puna-side of the Island so we bought our oceanfront lot and built Hale Ehu Kai a couple of years later. We enjoy going there and sharing it with our guests.
Hart or Marlene Phillips purchased this house in 2003
Why Hart or Marlene Phillips chose Hawaii
Hale Ehu Kai is very special in that it can be used as a relaxing place to stay your whole vacation or as a travel base due to being central to the volcanic action and near some of the unique Puna experiences.
What makes this house unique

This house's location, perched on the cliff, was amazing. In a well-maintained neighborhood, it was a great spot to explore the eastern side of the Big Island from. Loved the wall of windows...the waves were mesmerizing. We ate out on the huge lanai when we had the chance, but never used the hot tub (too busy adventuring I guess). Didn't spot whales or dolphins, but turtles were a common sight feeding offshore. Sunrises were beautiful...
Overall, the house was well taken care of. When we first walked in the house, we were met by lovely music that someone had thoughtfully turned on. A nice touch! The bathrooms in particular, seemed to be recently painted and updated. Very clean, except the blind over the kitchen sink. Mildew around window and on blinds. Upon entering the house for the first time, there was a noticeable mildew smell. This disappeared as soon as we opened the windows and aired it out. Except in the bedrooms....that carpet is somewhat musty. (Maybe yank that out next time you make improvements.) Loved the tall ceilings and ceiling fans too. Kitchen was adequate for our needs. A bit of a time with the gas stove at first. Initially one of the burners (front left) would stay on for about 30 seconds and then go out. Luckily I was standing right there, or we could have had an issue. It took about 5 times relighting it before it finally stayed on. Maybe something blocking the line? We did get a surprise one evening when the hot water ran out. Had run dishwasher, washing machine, and 4 showers over the course of the day. Unfortunately that last shower (late at night) was an ice cold one. Looked for a hot water heater, thinking maybe a pilot light had gone out (remembering stove earlier) but didn't find one. The next morning we looked on the roof, and sure enough, solar hot water! Evidently the cloudy days we experienced were not enough to supply what we needed. Luckily it was only that one day. The other days were sunny enough. But it would be nice if the house info had indicated solar so we would have a heads up. And no, we didn't call since it was late Saturday night and didn't want to disturb anyone for a non-emergency. :-)
We enjoyed our stay here, and I only dinged one star off mainly because of the mildew and minor annoyances. A lovely place to stay!
We loved this home! So close to the water and you get to listen to the waves crash at night, that was a wonderful way to fall asleep. We enjoyed the sounds of the Coqui frogs, they are so cute. The home was very clean and nicely appointed, we utilized the kitchen, balcony and hot tub quite a lot. This was a great place to relax and enjoy, will recommend to our friends!! Made a great base to enjoy the Volcano National Park!! Would stay here again if we ever return to this island.
Very well equipped and furnished. Quiet neighborhood and definitely ocean front!
Other than a few blinds being very worn it was in great shape. Clean and comfortable. Unfortunately it was too windy to use the deck unless you wanted to be soaked by sea spray!
Such a Beautiful View
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this comfortable and beautiful house. We had everything we needed. The house was clean, well furnished, comfortable and equipped very well, and was affordable. We loved the hot tub on the deck. Someone came to check it while we were there to make sure it was safe to use. The view of the ocean was amazing. We never got tired of watching the waves come in. We appreciated the notebook with the information about the area that the owners had prepared. Pahoa was an interesting town and we would love to return sometime. We would recommend this rental and the beautiful area that surrounded it.
We only stayed one night
While this is a lovely house with a fantastic view, we only stayed one night. We were scheduled to stay for three nights, but after the first night we left. Sadly, there was mold all over everything in this house. I know that it is hard to control moisture when you are right off of the Pacific, but there has to be something that can be done. I live in Houston and grew up on the Texas coast, so I am very familiar with humidity. When you see black splotches on the walls, smoke alarms, and blinds, something needs to be done. The place also had quite a few bugs, both alive and dead. My husband said he found dead roaches in the tub in the guest bathroom....I'm glad he decided to keep that a secret until we left, because we would have been sleeping in the car at that point. I debated about leaving this review, but felt that it needed to be known. I was so disappointed.
Pictures Do Not Do This Paradise Justice!
My husband and I eloped to the Big Island and stayed here at this wonderful home for our private honeymoon. We wanted something secluded, on the water, nice, clean, and affordable. This home provided all of that and more.
Booking on line is scary, especially given all the scams these days. We hoped for the best and expected nothing. We walked into the house and our jaws dropped. Hawaii hotels with no view, no kitchen...twice the price have nothing on this home. Clean, well kept, astounding views from all of the rooms, quiet and somewhat secluded, we were in heaven. Our first night we woke up at 4am to a spectacular sunrise and fresh coffee. We had stopped in Hilo for groceries on the way there (recommended, a bit of a drive) so we had a wonderful breakfast & coffee on the Lanai watching turtles and the sunrise. We did this every morning.
My husband and I fell in love with Pahoa so much so, we have decided to move here sometime in 2015! Thank you to the wonderful owners for sharing this paradise.
