Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Oceanfront Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray House) allows you to enjoy Hawaii at its best!! The view as you come in the front door is like you are on a boat, without the rocking. It is centrally located between the resident turtles (Humphrey, Hilda, and baby Hubert), dolphins, whales,

cruise ships, and other wild life in your front yard and the wonders of East Hawaii in your back yard. Kapoho warm pond and Champagne Pond, Lava Trees State Park, and some of the newest beaches in the world are within a few miles. Volcanoes National Park and Hilo are

30-45 minutes away. Spectacular waterfalls and scenery of the Kohala Coast and Waipio Valley are beyond Hilo.

It is truly a place where you can choose the pace of your vacation!

You can relax and enjoy the ocean from the spa, on the huge 12'x40'

deck, or in the house or you can explore the Big Island by driving,

bicycling, or hiking. Nearby, funky Pahoa Town has outstanding and

varied restaurants and shops. Snorkeling and surfing are nearby, but

not at the house.

It is wheelchair accessible so everyone can enjoy it's magnificent

setting, with a ramp, lever-type door and bathroom handles, wide pocket doors,

roll-in shower with fixed and hand held shower heads and grab bars. It is also a non-smoking house. We have completely outfitted Hale Ehu Kai so that you will feel like you are coming home to paradise! Marlene has included everything you

could ever need in the kitchen (as more than one visitor has said, 'if

you can't find it--just look harder').

Remember!! You also can combine your stay with the owner's Kona-side vacation rental at Kealakekua Bay, Hale o Lei (#22776) for a total Big Island experience (and a 'package-price' rate).

About Hart or Marlene Phillips

Aloha! Marlene and I retired to the Big Island in 2001 because of it's wonderful people and diverse scenery. Prior to that, Marlene was a teacher and I was a human relations manager/consultant for many years. We had always loved the Puna-side of the Island so we bought our oceanfront lot and built Hale Ehu Kai a couple of years later. We enjoy going there and sharing it with our guests.

Hart or Marlene Phillips purchased this house in 2003

Why Hart or Marlene Phillips chose Puna District

Hale Ehu Kai is very special in that it can be used as a relaxing place to stay your whole vacation or as a travel base due to being central to the volcanic action and near some of the unique Puna experiences.

What makes this house unique

Come and see....you won't be disappointed!! Also, we built Hale Ehu Kai accessible, so all can enjoy, even if there are mobility challenges. We also have a vacation rental Kona-side (Hale o Lei #702276), and many people stay with us both sides.

Our trip to the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We stayed six nights in this lovely condo for our trip to the Big Island in August. We loved it! The development is right on the ocean and within walking distance to many restaurants, shops, night life, etc. It's clean, well apportioned, and parking is simple. The pool and hot tub have great ocean views, also, and everything is very well maintained. Fortunately, this unit is air conditioned because it was quite warm and humid during our visit. It's within easy driving distance of the airport and many local attractions. We highly recommend!

The property was perfect . Have never stayed in a house with so much in the kitchen!

You House is perfect for the person that is heading to Hawaii for a relaxing stay. The Hot Tub on the deck with Ocean crashing and a Plastic glass of wine... can you ask for anything more? The property is all the pictures make it to be, and More. If I can get to Hawaii again I would stay here.

Comfortable relaxing home with beautiful ocean views and sounds of the surf at night.

Perfect way to celebrate my husband's 80th birthday. This is the way Hawaii looked 50 years ago - lush vegetation along the ocean road. Quiet, non-touristy. Short drive into Hilo for breakfast at Ken's and a delightful dinner in Hilo at Pineapple (both reasonably priced).

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place. Fell asleep listening to the ocean waves. We could watch the sunrise and sunset while watching the turtles right in front of our Lanaii. The location was also perfect for seeing all the sights on the Hilo side of the island. We would love to come back.

Excellent Stay

  • 4 of 5

Everything about our stay was easy, from the on-line reservation, communicating via email with the owner/hosts, the detailed instructions that they sent, getting to and into the house, and closing up. Hart even called at the start of our stay to check in with us and offer suggestions for local eats and things to do.

A couple of things to be aware of:

This is a ocean front home, very, very ocean front, as in walk twenty feet away from the back of the house and your feet will be wet. Ocean front homes take a beating from the salt spray and weather. So that means you will see some rust and corrosion on the door frames and windows. That does NOT mean that the house is dirty or poorly maintained. That's just the way it is with a home so close to the salt spray

There is no air conditioning at the house, so don't go searching for a thermostat. We stayed there in late March and had no need for AC. The ocean breeze cooled the place quite nicely.

The house is in Hawaii, a tropical island, so bugs are a fact of life. We saw a few during our stay, but no means were we overrun. Clean up the kitchen and eating areas carefully, do not leave open food on the counters and it will be fine. We never had any problems in the bedroom.

It's in a quiet neighborhood, away from nightlife. Good restaurants, stores were an easy 30 min drive away, and the location was well situated for seeing Hilo and the area north of there, as well as Volcano National Park, and the Kalapana area. If you're interested in being in tghe thick of things, this is not the location for you. If you're wanting a quite neighborhood, with killer ocean views, and a very comfortable house, you will be right at home.

The house is very well stocked with everything that you will need; a fully equipped and functional kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, and 2 full bathrooms. We are not handicapped in any way, but for those that have mobility impairments, the house seems very accommodating in that regard.

All-in-all it was great place to stay.

Nice clean, comfortable, attractive home just feet from ocean!

  • 5 of 5

If you would like to experience Hawaiian island living just a few feet from waves crashing into a cliff below, it would be hard to find a better vacation home. One of the two bedrooms, the living area and the lanai (porch) all face the sea. Looking out, it almost feels like one is on a boat, except their is no rocking. We enjoyed dining on the lanai, watching the hypnotic wave action, and we enjoyed letting the sound of the waves lull us to sleep at night. There are several restaurants nearby in Pahoa, but we enjoyed cooking and eating most breakfasts and dinners in this well supplied home. The home was a good base for visiting a number of beautiful parks, and was close to a hike where one could watch hot lave shooting into the sea at sunset.

This is the lush, green, wet side of the Big Island. The vegetation is spectacularly beautiful. it rained most nights, but late mornings through evenings were clear for us. Between the nighttime rains and the sea spray this house is definitely in a humid location! The good news is that the temperatures in January were perfect. We never felt too hot or too cold. My only complaint about the house is that the beds are exceptionally soft. My back needs a bit more support than most. Fortunately I found a mattress in the closet that let me sleep comfortably on the floor.

Owner's Response: We're overjoyed this guest loved our place! Next time, just call us. We have put memory foam toppers on firm mattresses. All they would have to do is to remove the memory foam if the bed is too soft (or let us know prior to the visit, and we can do so).
