Accessible Oceanfront Beach Cottage- Hale Ehu Kai

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,600 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 6 Sleeps

Oceanfront Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray House) allows you to enjoy Hawaii at its best!! The view as you come in the front door is like you are on a boat, without the rocking. It is centrally located between the resident turtles (Humphrey, Hilda, and baby Hubert), dolphins, whales,

cruise ships, and other wild life in your front yard and the wonders of East Hawaii in your back yard. Kapoho warm pond and Champagne Pond, Lava Trees State Park, and some of the newest beaches in the world are within a few miles. Volcanoes National Park and Hilo are

30-45 minutes away. Spectacular waterfalls and scenery of the Kohala Coast and Waipio Valley are beyond Hilo.

It is truly a place where you can choose the pace of your vacation!

You can relax and enjoy the ocean from the spa, on the huge 12'x40'

deck, or in the house or you can explore the Big Island by driving,

bicycling, or hiking. Nearby, funky Pahoa Town has outstanding and

varied restaurants and shops. Snorkeling and surfing are nearby, but

not at the house.

It is wheelchair accessible so everyone can enjoy it's magnificent

setting, with a ramp, lever-type door and bathroom handles, wide pocket doors,

roll-in shower with fixed and hand held shower heads and grab bars. It is also a non-smoking house. We have completely outfitted Hale Ehu Kai so that you will feel like you are coming home to paradise! Marlene has included everything you

could ever need in the kitchen (as more than one visitor has said, 'if

you can't find it--just look harder').

Remember!! You also can combine your stay with the owner's Kona-side vacation rental at Kealakekua Bay, Hale o Lei (#22776) for a total Big Island experience (and a 'package-price' rate).

About Hart or Marlene Phillips

Aloha! Marlene and I retired to the Big Island in 2001 because of it's wonderful people and diverse scenery. Prior to that, Marlene was a teacher and I was a human relations manager/consultant for many years. We had always loved the Puna-side of the Island so we bought our oceanfront lot and built Hale Ehu Kai a couple of years later. We enjoy going there and sharing it with our guests.

Hart or Marlene Phillips purchased this house in 2003

Why Hart or Marlene Phillips chose Pahoa

Hale Ehu Kai is very special in that it can be used as a relaxing place to stay your whole vacation or as a travel base due to being central to the volcanic action and near some of the unique Puna experiences.

What makes this house unique

Come and won't be disappointed!! Also, we built Hale Ehu Kai accessible, so all can enjoy, even if there are mobility challenges. We also have a vacation rental Kona-side (Hale o Lei #702276), and many people stay with us both sides.

Water View

  • 4 of 5

You can't get a better waterfront view. Enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the waves and the turtles. Neighborhood is quiet. Hear the ocean, tree frogs chirping at night and lots of song birds in the morning.

Being close to the water makes for good scenery, but also increases the already high humidity of the area. This shows as some corrosion in places but the house is clean.

Also as in another review, there are some bugs, but not excessive. It is important to keep food put away.

There was construction on Hwy 130 while we were there so backed up traffic headed into Hilo, but usually an easy drive.

No air conditioning but ceiling fans and opening windows help keep it comfortable.

Bed in master bedroom has thick memory foam which we found a little too soft. Great walk-in shower in master bathroom.

House is definitely more accessible for people with mobility issues.

Had a power outage due to high winds and we were grateful for the automatic flashlights plugged into outlets in the living room and hall.

Hart and Marlene were very easy to communicate with. Had a problem with Direct TV box after the power outage. They came out to deal with it very promptly.

Love the Farmer's Market in Hilo. Great fruit and vegetables.

Went to the zoo and was surprised it was bigger than expected and it is free!

The volcano was of course impressive. Have seen it several times and always changing. Driving up to Jagger Museum lookout after dark provides a great view of the glow of Halamaumau.

Beautiful cottage by the sea

  • 5 of 5

This was a great home away from home for us as we used it as home base while we explored all over the big island. Highlight was the volcano, of course, by day and by night, including biking the 4 miles from rental shops to where the lava meets the sea.

Our trip to the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

We stayed six nights in this lovely condo for our trip to the Big Island in August. We loved it! The development is right on the ocean and within walking distance to many restaurants, shops, night life, etc. It's clean, well apportioned, and parking is simple. The pool and hot tub have great ocean views, also, and everything is very well maintained. Fortunately, this unit is air conditioned because it was quite warm and humid during our visit. It's within easy driving distance of the airport and many local attractions. We highly recommend!

The property was perfect . Have never stayed in a house with so much in the kitchen!

You House is perfect for the person that is heading to Hawaii for a relaxing stay. The Hot Tub on the deck with Ocean crashing and a Plastic glass of wine... can you ask for anything more? The property is all the pictures make it to be, and More. If I can get to Hawaii again I would stay here.

Comfortable relaxing home with beautiful ocean views and sounds of the surf at night.

  • 4 of 5

Perfect way to celebrate my husband's 80th birthday. This is the way Hawaii looked 50 years ago - lush vegetation along the ocean road. Quiet, non-touristy. Short drive into Hilo for breakfast at Ken's and a delightful dinner in Hilo at Pineapple (both reasonably priced).

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place. Fell asleep listening to the ocean waves. We could watch the sunrise and sunset while watching the turtles right in front of our Lanaii. The location was also perfect for seeing all the sights on the Hilo side of the island. We would love to come back.
