Located on a corner lot, 1.2 miles from El Centro (Jardin) in Colonia Santa Julia Colonia Santa Julia has a great mix of neighbors: Mexican, American,Canadian, European. Rent a home where the residents of San Miguel live! -English speaking property manager on call 24 hours a day, and will stock groceries and bar for an additional fee -Secure off street parking -Bus service into Centro (the Santa Julia bus) three blocks away (no bus fumes on our calle!). Easy walk from the house to Centro and back. Taxis are 25 pesos (about $2 U.S.) flat rate every daytime trip, 30 pesos at night. - This is typical San Miguel house and as with most private homes in San Miguel there is NO central heat or air conditioning. Only restaurants and hotels have heat and ac in San Miguel. We have rolling propane heaters, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, a down blanket, flannel sheets and an electric blanket for winter months. The upstairs rooms have ceiling fans and the entire house has wide French doors and windows for summer cross breezes. If you require central heat and air this is not the house for you. - Throughout Mexico tap water can be of questionable quality. Purified bottled water is available, please drink and cook only with bottled water and not water from the tap.

Casa de Heloc in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

My travels outside the country have been limited to the guidance of group tours, but this trip was my first one on my own. The home owners and caretakers help you out throughout your stay to provide you with information about San Miguel and the surrounding area and culture but you still have the freedom to go out and adventure on your own with the comfort of learning a few choice phrases, how to properly tip, and the best restaurants with the best food. The house itself is full of amenities for cooking local food from the markets and is fully decorated with local artwork on every wall and shelf. The neighbors are all very friendly and ready to introduce you to their favorite places around town and Walter the neighborly dog loves to hang out if you choose to invite him in! San Miguel itself is very active and celebratory during the holidays. I did not have one bad experience in any of the restaurants or shops and people were very understanding of the limited Spanish I knew. There was so much to do in town that I did not even get to venture outside of the city and explore....this just means that I have to go back again. Everyday there was music playing around the restaurants in the Jardin from musicians who took as much pride in their music as the chiefs had in their food. At the time of my visit the prices at the restaurants and shops were incredibly affordable when compared to American prices. I could not recommend this trip more especially for people traveling to Mexico for the first time or even out of the country for the first time. Binders around the home are provided by the home owner and help diminish any fears or concerns one may have when traveling outside of their comfort zone and into a new place. Take the leap and buy the plane ticket and reserve a spot at Casa de Heloc today!

Comfortable good-sized home

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable, spacious, beautifully-decorated home for our one month stay in San Migjel. The home has large windows looking out into the enclosed garden and the sun streamed in those windows every morning, making it a great dining room for sitting at breakfast and throughout the morning. Both the owner and management company were very responsive to our needs. We used their services to have a chef come to the house to cook us some meals which was very helpful. However the chef got lost both times so I would ensure that the management company gives good instructions on location if you use her services. (The food she made was very tasty!) The manual was very thorough and helpful. We visited a restaurant down on the "main drag" at the bottom of the hill 5 times for dinner in the month we were there which was only a 15 min walk away...local, family-owned and very reasonable and friendly service...nice to have so close -Grille Torres. It took me about a half hour walk to get to the centre of town but that was fine as I liked the exercise. One advantage of this location is that you are living mostly amongst regular Mexican families. We found that more interesting than being in a gringo "enclave". Also we felt completely safe walking back to the house eirher from town or the restaurant just down the hill at night. I would recommend this as a place that is very good value for the money to stay.

Just what we had hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent Jan and Feb at Casa Heloc. Sylvie met us and gave us a tour. The house is even better than the photos. Santa Julia is a Mexican colonia with a mix of Mexican and gringo residence. The manual provides good information on how the house works, how to get bottled water and gas, etc. The housekeeper is lovely, industrious and speaks very little english. She provided me with an opportunity to practice my spanish. We were able to share a little of our histories. The gardener kept the garden areas tidy - the wind is frequent and blows debris from the trees.

The kitchen is well equipped. There are staples and spices to be replaced as needed. The laundry area in the back patio is great - there's a clothesline and drying rack as well as a washer and dryer. The bed in the master bedroom is comfortable and there are lots of blankets and flannel sheets when the nights are cold. The gas heaters on each floor help take the chill off. There is a gas fireplace but we didn't us it.

There are 2 patios - one on the main level which was great for us as the area is large enough to park our car. The roof top provides tremendous views of Centro and the Parroquia. Lovely area to watch sunrise and sunset, or the hot air balloons that sail by early in the morning.

The streets are a combination of dirt, cobble and cement. Good walking shoes are a must and watching your feet. There are lots of street dogs, most with homes, but they wander around during the day. They don't pay any attention to passersby. They do provide another reason to look where you are walking. There are also roosters and dogs to wake you up in the morning. It's all part of the Mexican experience.

WIFI. TV and phones worked well most of the time. The systems are not as stable as in the US and Canada.

Although we had a car it was rarely used. The local bus is 5 pesos and a taxi is 50 pesos. Our preference was to walk - 15 - 20 minutes down the hill into town. We spent a lot of time walking through various colonias. Lots of different sites, sounds, tastes and smell (some good, some not so much). Lots of photo ops for my husband. I thoroughly enjoyed my classes at the Warren Hardy School.

We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked for next year already.

Janis......I know it is lazy of me, but just take everything good ever written about Casa Heloc and at least double it. This, our fourth year renting in SMA, (3 months) sped by without a single negative issue. Your management company, Lupe and Vincente, even Walter were just great. For what it is worth, having been in the vacation business at one time, after our visit I usually write or phone the owner off the record with any suggestions for improvement we might have. You will not be hearing from us. We have no suggestions. Dont change a thing. We would recommend Casa Heloc without reservation. Sincerely, N & M.

This is it!!

  • 5 of 5

Once in awhile when traveling, you come across a place that grabs your heart and spirit so completely, that you know you will return there again and again. Casa Heloc is one of those places that from the moment you open the door, until you close it with reluctant goodbyes, you know you will never forget your stay. So what sets it apart? There are the obvious things: the 360 degree view from the rooftop deck looking down onto the centro of San Miguel, watching the morning sunrise, the art work beautifully displayed throughout the house, the magnificent and fully stocked kitchen, the courtyard off the living room for starlit dinners, and Lupe, housekeeper extraordinaire, who kept the place spotless! But what really struck us about Casa Heloc was that it really felt like a home to us, that kind of cozy ambiance of a place where you actually want to spend time just enjoying the space. We loved our exploring of San Miguel and outlying areas, but we were always delighted to come home again. We really felt like we were part of the community that surrounded us, always greeted with friendly Hola's, hearing the local music at night, the kids playing in the street, the occasional braying of the neighbors donkey or rooster, mothers walking their children to school, the calls of a street vendor passing buy. All of it, made it so special. And then there is Walter, the street dog...affectionately known as "The Mayor of Santa Julia", who completely stole our hearts. Thank You Janis for opening the doors of Casa Heloc to his very welcomed visits. So if you are looking for that special place to hang your hat while taking in the beauty and charm of San Miguel, then We absolutely recommend this home.

Lovely home and gardens!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned home from our second visit to San Miguel and we chose to stay at Casa Heloc both visits. We will do so again and again. The house is lovely and immediately feels like home. We love the gardens, the art, and the wonderful rooftop with views of the mountains and La Parroquia. Erika, the house manager and her staff as well as Lupe, the maid, were professional and responsive. Thank you Janis for making your home so inviting.
