Way too far to walk from the ferry with luggage, and I would suggest bringing your car because it’s cheaper than the parking garage in Portland.
Thank you for making a note of this. As the description of the cottage says, it is a 10 minute walk from the ferry. With luggage that can be a lot. There is a taxi that meets every boat, so that is an option for those who don't want to bring a car over. But, with the parking rates in Portland, if you are staying more than two nights, it is cheaper to bring over your car. There are two off-street parking spaces at the house.
Charming, Clean, and Perfectly Located
My family and I enjoyed a relaxing get-away at Meghan’s Peak’s Island cottage. Meghan is a perfect and conscientious host and was available for any questions/assistance throughout our visit. In fact, her responses to questions were even quicker than expected. The cottage was bright and spotless when we arrived with the appropriate linens folded on each bed. It was immediate clear that this was a well-cared-for retreat for a lucky family! The sunny master bedroom had more than enough closet and drawer space. The upstairs loft was perfect for 3 high school boys to have their own space. As a cook, I found the open kitchen well equipped and lovely to work in as the boys sat at the island for breakfast and lunches. The outside grill was a nice size for meat and veggies prepared all together. The neighborhood is quiet but friendly. The 10PM “quiet time” is absolutely appropriate. The “kids” found a campfire site along the water nearby and, after easily obtaining a permit via website, made s’mores one evening with other friends visiting the Peaks.
We brought our car to the island making it easy to bring our groceries and luggage to the house. It was actually less expensive to bring the car on the ferry than to park in Portland! After that, it never moved until packing up and leaving! Although the cottage is conveniently within walking distance to “town” and the ferry, we rented a golf cart for the week. This made exploring a bit more fun, especially for the teens (fyi..need driver’s license) who spent a lot of time fishing on the Backshore and swimming at the Sandy Beach.
The ferry made it convenient for a couple of visits to Portland as well as entertain a few friends from the Portland area for a lobster feast (with very fresh lobsters from the lobster shack right at the island ferry dock). Throughout the week, we purchased additional groceries and supplies at Hannigan’s Market and did not find the prices as outrageous as expected being on an island. Hannigan’s also makes a great “Maine Italian” sandwich which I miss back home in NJ. Lunch with a friend on the back deck at Cockeyed Gull was a bit pricy but well-worth the treat! The teens really enjoyed their “night out” for dinner at Island Lobster Company which, for the adults, has an awesome selection of summer cocktails!
All in all, we had a terrific week on Peaks Island in this charming, clean, and perfectly-located cottage. And, Meghan could not have been a more attentive and thoughtful host!
Thank you, Patty. We are so glad you and the boys found so much to enjoy on the island. It is truly a special place. We hope to have you back soon!
We loved our stay here and can't wait to be back next summer. The cottage is an easy walk to town and a stone's throw from the back shore. Meghan was quick to reply with any questions and concerns I had before and during our trip. Thank you for letting us stay in your little slice of paradise! Until next summer, Peaks!
Perfect spot for a week on Peaks
The cottage is very bright and roomy. It wasn’t as clean as I would have liked. The counters had dirt and crumbs behind the items on the counter. The baseboards looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned in a while and the floor wasn’t the cleanest. I left the cottage cleaner than I found it.
That being said it was fairly spacious and very bright. The location was great, only 3/4ths of a mile from the ferry and extremely close to one of my favorite beaches.
After finding numerous DVDs we were surprised and a little disappointed there was no player.
All in all we enjoyed the stay.
Thank you for the comments. We are glad you enjoyed the cottage and the island, but we are sorry you found some issues. We clean well between each visit, including mopping the floor in every room (most of which is wood). I am sorry you found spots not to your satisfaction. We may have missed a few spots and would have gladly come out and cleaned them again had we known. Ditto with the crumbs. We dump out the toaster between visitors, but that toaster seems to be hard to fully empty. I get frustrated because I find crumbs myself! As for the baseboards, they are, indeed, scuffed. We plan to paint them during our own two weeks at the cottage later this summer. Thanks, though, for reporting all of this and for cleaning so well when you left. It was, indeed, spotless. I am glad you enjoyed the location. It is such a lovely spot.
Wonderful place for families
Beautiful home with great spaces for one or two families to stay. Nice views, peaceful setting. Short walk to a rocky beach (beautiful views and good for exploring) and not too far of a walk to the sandy beach. Will definitely be back!

About Meghan Casey
We are former Peaks Islanders, having lived here year round in the 1990s. We built this house in 2007, after being lucky enough to find a lot for sale in our price range. Chuck is a builder, and the cottage is typical of one of the houses Chuck builds---energy efficient and passive solar, with big, south-facing windows, lots of natural light, and open spaces.
Meghan Casey purchased this House in 2007
Why Meghan Casey chose Peaks Island
This is a great location for families because the shore is a one-minute walk away. The island is a safe, adventurous place for children to ride. Our cottage is also perfect for a romantic get away, as our area of the island is quieter, removed from the hustle and bustle of down front.
What makes this House unique
The loft upstairs is great for children, in that five or six can sleep there comfortably. It also has a queen sized bed, so it is a nice third bedroom if three couples are traveling.
