About Sue & Darren

One born & bred area girl and one "summers-at-the-shore" boy knew the place for them was small town life by the sea. Familiar faces & traditional events in town, elementary school around the corner, beautiful beaches, walking & biking through town, and wonderful neighbors was the lifestyle we wanted for our young family. The town of Spring Lake is a special place, to which our many guests attest - visit, after visit, after visit.

Why Sue & Darren chose Jersey Shore

This charming home has links to the historic Lewis Lumber Yard which occupied several blocks in this part of town. Mr. Lewis built a row of homes across the street for his employees, while our home was most likely built for an over-see-er or manager. Original floors and trim were in excellent shape when we purchased the home & have been maintained. Renovations to the home have been completed with the historic value of the home in mind, in order to preserve the authenticity of the dwelling.

Home away from Home

We absolutely love this vacation home, so much that we've rented it 3 times over the past 5 years. The owners make you feel like it's your home and are always available, if needed. Over the years they beautifully updated their home and we benefit :) We will continue to rent this home and continue to make our summer memories here !

Should have trusted our instincts

despite my instincts (based on a VRBO review as well as a couple strange conversations with the owners) 8 rented this house for myself, my parents, my adult sibling and my three year old daughter over Labor Day. Unfortunately I wish I had trusted my gut as the owners not only invaded our vacation every day of our stay but also robbed us of over half our security deposit in one of the most ludicrous and insulting letters of grievances I have ever received.

The house lived up to its expectations in that it is charming, well decorated, organized so nicely for guests and a great location. Sue, the owner, left a wonderful book for my daughter as a welcome gesture, but unfortunately none of that outweighs the extreme negatives that are unacceptable for renters.

The owners found reasons to come to the property every day, and each time we were accomodating. Although it made my husband and parents uncomfortable, we were gracious and even went as far as to quickly vacate the home so the owner could show it to another prospect. The most intrusive was when the owner asked me if her son could come over and mow the lawn early one morning. I said yes and for the next two hours had to uncomfortably deal with her husband lurking around the backyard, front yard and garage. As my parents attempted to enjoy coffee in their pajamas, they felt incredibly uncomfortable being able to see the owner 10 feet away appearing to do nothing more than spy on us. Well after the son was done mowing, the husband stayed and at one point seemed to be watching the home from his car.

Despite all of this, I was prepared against my husband's wishes to not submit an official review but instead email the owners with suggestions on how to make people feel more like it is their home for the weekend if they pay.

That was until we received our security deposit back. The owners took over $600 of our money with unfounded and ridiculous charges such as "physical remnants and odor beyond description" in the master bedroom where my very tidy and clean smelling parents slept.

There were false charges of evidence of smoking cigarettes and damaging the cushions with ashes. This is an outright lie. Most frustrating of the claims is a paragraph long rant about ants. Yes, within an hour of arriving, we found ants so out of pocket we bought ant traps since this is CLEARLY a common problem.

If you value your privacy and money do not rent this home. We are insulted and will not be returning.

Owner's Response: "Should Have Trusted Our Instincts" We Have: 14 Years Rental History / 34 Happy Families Staying Here / 12 Returning Families for multiple stays ------------------- 1) Despite our instincts & conversations w/ this guest, we rented the property to them. What began as a request for a 2-week rental, changed many times re: dates of stay & who was renting the house. Phone calls to guests often went unanswered & required repeated msgs - hence many phone conversations occurred between owners & guests. -- 2) A lease agreement was drawn up & agreed to by both parties & covers the aspects these guests' dispute. -- 3) We do not & did not "invade" guests' stay. Our non-driving son had the job of mowing the property lawn each week. We always run this by our guests to make sure they are okay w/ the time he'll be coming (given his other work schedule). As this guest indicated, we did contact them & they approved the time for him to be @ the house. He was driven by his father to mow the lawn, who remained in the car across the street for the 20-30 mins it takes to mow the lawn. If he chose to watch the job his son was doing on the lawn & make sure his son did not need assistance, he's just doing his job as a father. -- 4) In no way, were we @ the house every day. We have other life-aspects which need our attention. Yes, the lease agreement allowed for showing the house to prospective tenants. As guests indicated, we requested permission before bringing people by & they had no disagreement. -- 5) We ensure the house is immaculate for every entering guest, void of "pests", & the way we want to find a rental secured for our own family. As itemized for these guests, any costs deducted from security deposit were used to take care of issues resulting from their stay. The state in which these guests left the house, was that bad ~ filthy (remains too sensitive to post here), food remnants throughout house, ants so rampant thru-out the house Pest Control had to be brought in, more people at the house than approved to stay, etc. -- 6) We encourage all guests to report any issues whatsoever so we can address it. These guests reported nothing at all ~ in fact, we have many txt msgs verifying how much they loved the house & all was great. -- 7) We personally met 5 of the guests (husband, daughter, parents), who seemed like such wonderful people. Guess we were fooled ~ we were shocked to discover the state in which they left the home upon their departure.

Cozy spring lake rental

Exceptionally clean, well maintained and well-equipped. Convenient location to town and beach. Owner is very hands in and helpful. Provided useful guidance, beach and pool badges. Highly recommend for an affordable spring lake rental.

Owner kept complete deposit accusing us of damages

We absolutely do not recommend this rental property. This house is beautiful and the right price but it is not a rental property. This is the owner's personal home and they micromanage it in an obsessive manner that makes being a guest there miserable. They were apparently watching us and having their neighbors watch us during the duration of our stay and, unbeknownst to us, simultaneously creating lists of complaints against us. They accused us of unsubstantiated excessive damage in multi-paged legal documents delivered by certified mail after the conclusion of the rental.

Accused damages included (but were not limited to - remember this was a multipage document): excessive water use and excessive sand in the laundry machine - at a beach rental house; missing silverware, two stained oven mitts, a missing bath towel and such. Furthermore, they sent in their cleaning person at a specific day and time (always Fridays) whether that is convenient for your plans or not. Again, it is their house and you are made to feel like you are a guest who needs to follow their rules as opposed to a renting user with associated rights.

We were terribly sad to see the rental end this way and would caution anyone from renting this property. They are completely ignorant of normal rental arrangements because this is their home - NOT A RENTAL.

We have rented high end homes (rental costs as high as $10,000/week) for years around the world through both and VRBO and never had a problem and never written a complaint. BE FOREWARNED. THIS IS NOT A SAFE RENTAL.
