Enjoy the Community Pool, Tennis, and Private Beach Access

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Jul 22, 2016
Large comfortable 4-BR, 2 BA house with Water & Mountain Views

This large, comfortable 'backbeach' house is what summer's all about: swimming pool, tennis, beach, family, fun. Sailors' End is situated on the culdesac at the end of the road--set back from the beachfront--where kids can play in the huge yard or bike the small community while you relax on the deck. Up the road, the private community swimming pool is warm and welcoming with tennis next door. Down the road (~5 min stroll) is the community's private beach access to the golden sand of Mutiny Bay--SW-facing and great for beachcombing, beach fires, and building castles and forts, a favorite local kids' pasttime. Sailors' End borders a nature preserve where you'll hear the croaking of frogs at twilight, and see rabbits, deer, bald eagles, osprey, and, at night, STARS!

The upstairs living area is spacious and airy with sky lights and an open floorplan facing partial views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It's been recently remodeled with new windows, doors, and bamboo flooring--clean and fresh. Master bedroom has king bed; second upstairs bedroom has double. All bedrooms have down comforters and pillows (non-down options available). Kitchen has that comfortable beach feel--large & functional, not fussy or fancy--and is laid out well for multiple chefs, and stocked with plenty of everything for large groups. Open floorplan with eating bar is great for socializing; artistic touches add whimsy and style.

If you've got friends or kids joining you, you'll make use of the lower level with its huge light & bright family room--DVD player, board games, toys, and fireplace. Also two more bedrooms (queen + twin, and full + twin) and laundry room. Ping pong table in the carport! Cornhole (bean bag toss) for the deck or yard! Plenty of space for folks to gather together and play or chat, or curl up alone for a little down time.

We're a short drive--or bike ride!--to Freeland's excellent grocery store, Langley's antique shops, and South Whidbey State Park's old-growth hiking trails. Large backyard has apple tree and swing, and beckons for wiffle ball, croquet, or bocce ball. Sailors' End is the kind of beach house you remember from your childhood--not fussy or fancy--but clean, bright, comfortable, well-appointed, and a great place for relaxation and fun.

We had a great time!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at Sailor's End. This is an older house, but very comfortable. It had everything we needed and lots of space for our large group (6 adults, four kids). We enjoyed the large back yard and played badminton, ping pong, and used the big swing. The house was very cozy and relaxed feeling. Lots of dishes (including plastic for the kids, which we appreciated), a pack and play in great shape, and a booster chair. There was also a kids table and little chairs, which was perfect for our littles to eat at while the adults sat at the big table. There were lots of toys for the kids, little couches, dress-up clothes, etc. The beach is nearby, but was a bit of a walk with young ones and all our beach gear. Definitely worth it though as it is a beautiful spot. The house and property are clean, and Janna was easy to communicate with via email and she happily answered all of our questions. For Canadians who use Roam Mobility, data service is not available at the house. Voice was also very spotty. We did take a day trip to Port Townsend, which I would recommend. A fun, short ferry ride for the kids and a really unique town to explore for the adults. We just walked onto the ferry. No car needed on the other end. Our only regret is that we didn't book to stay longer. Another day would have been perfect!

Owner's Response: We're so glad Ashala had a great time at our beach home! Yes, we really do try to meet the needs of families, which is easy to do with our own children as consultants. The suggestion to ferry to Port Townsend is a great one too. Sounds like it would help if we cleared out the wheelbarrow or a red wagon for folks to use to/from the beach. I'll see what I can do next time we're up!

Attending Wedding / Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We were very pleased with the home. There were plenty of room and could easily sleep 10 in very comfortable beds -- and still have a futon, and 3 couches that could be utilized!! I cannot stress the beds enough! Kitchen well stocked with plenty of dishes/pots and pans, etc. Also, ice cream maker, blender, expresso machine, plus more! Great water pressure for showers too!

The home is like your home. Very comfortable and you can relax in it. It has a couple of things that need upgrading but you can see that upgrading has been happening. Deer were abundant -- be careful driving -- they just stroll. Rabbits are often seen out the window on the stair landing also.

All and all, I would recommend and would revisit and stay again at this home.

Owner's Response: Yes, upgrading has continued! Since this review, we've improved the view (with major tree trimming), improved the deck (new railing), installed new bamboo flooring downstairs (it was already upstairs), and installed a new oven/stove. People always comment on how comfy our beds are--I think it's because we have down comforters and pillows on every bed. In fact, most are from a local NW company called Pacific Coast Feather--their stuff is the best. For folks with down allergies, we have non-down alternatives in the linen closet. This reviewer mentions an ice cream maker and espresso machine--unfortunately those died, apparently too many bells and whistles for a rental. :( On the bright side, for summer 2014, we've opened up access to the community pool and tennis court to our guests. And of course there's always the awesome beach just 5 min walk away.

Even better than hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time! The house is beautiful inside and the layout was wonderful for a group. The kids weren't sure what they were going to do without wi-fi and video games but quickly found many wonderful things to do. We all loved the large window on the stairwell looking out over the back yard. Lots of bunnies and quail to spy on. The bedrooms and beds were beautiful and very comfortable. Ping pong was a big hit and we had to limit the morning start time so the whole group wasn't woken when the 11yo wanted to start a game at 8am! We also made good use of the games and cards and my 9yo daughter decided to start the Twilight series when she found the book in the bookshelf. She made it to page 59 before we left and was very proud of herself! The grill worked wonderfully and we had the best steak dinner in awhile. We loved the beach and even though there was snow on the North side of the island the beach temp was mild and we all went barefoot in March and stayed warm!

Overall it was a lovely time and I hope we can come again this year!

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place to get away to. We enjoyed the spaciousness of the home and its welcoming feel. Our large group fit just right. There's a nice variety of books and games. The ping pong tournaments downstairs were lively and fun. We enjoyed the location as it was close to beach, shopping and state parks. Janna is very responsive and easy to get a hold of. We highly recommend this vacation rental!

Location

From the Owner

Rob and I bought this big ole beach house just from our dear friends who have had it since 2000. We have been coming to this place ever for many years, filled it with friends, dogs, and beer-pong tournaments back when it still had shag carpet and fake-wood paneling. Since then the house has been slowly upgraded with installing proper walls, windows, and bamboo flooring (we were fine letting that shag carpet go). But it still has its beachy charm with driftwood mantels and a lovely open floorpan that's great for spending quality time with friends and family.

Amenities

From the Owner

We love being set back away from the bustle of the beach, where we have privacy and our kids can roam the HUGE backyard and do loop-de-loops in the cul-de-sac on their bikes. Meanwhile we kick back with a glass of wine on the deck. The view of the water and mountains lets you know you're at the beach, but the size of the house lets you spread out and relax with all your friends and family (beachfront houses in our community are limited to one-story). Mutiny Bay is the best sand beach on the island!
