Enjoy the Community Pool, Tennis, and Private Beach Access

Bedrooms 4
Space 222 m²
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Large comfortable 4-BR, 2 BA house with Water & Mountain Views

This large, comfortable 'backbeach' house is what summer's all about: swimming pool, tennis, beach, family, fun. Sailors' End is situated on the culdesac at the end of the road--set back from the beachfront--where kids can play in the huge yard or bike the small community while you relax on the deck. Up the road, the private community swimming pool is warm and welcoming with tennis next door. Down the road (~5 min stroll) is the community's private beach access to the golden sand of Mutiny Bay--SW-facing and great for beachcombing, beach fires, and building castles and forts, a favorite local kids' pasttime. Sailors' End borders a nature preserve where you'll hear the croaking of frogs at twilight, and see rabbits, deer, bald eagles, osprey, and, at night, STARS!

The upstairs living area is spacious and airy with sky lights and an open floorplan facing partial views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It's been recently remodeled with new windows, doors, and bamboo flooring--clean and fresh. Master bedroom has king bed; second upstairs bedroom has double. All bedrooms have down comforters and pillows (non-down options available). Kitchen has that comfortable beach feel--large & functional, not fussy or fancy--and is laid out well for multiple chefs, and stocked with plenty of everything for large groups. Open floorplan with eating bar is great for socializing; artistic touches add whimsy and style.

If you've got friends or kids joining you, you'll make use of the lower level with its huge light & bright family room--DVD player, board games, toys, and fireplace. Also two more bedrooms (queen + twin, and full + twin) and laundry room. Ping pong table in the carport! Cornhole (bean bag toss) for the deck or yard! Plenty of space for folks to gather together and play or chat, or curl up alone for a little down time.

We're a short drive--or bike ride!--to Freeland's excellent grocery store, Langley's antique shops, and South Whidbey State Park's old-growth hiking trails. Large backyard has apple tree and swing, and beckons for wiffle ball, croquet, or bocce ball. Sailors' End is the kind of beach house you remember from your childhood--not fussy or fancy--but clean, bright, comfortable, well-appointed, and a great place for relaxation and fun.

About Mari and Rob

Rob and I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for decades and we think that this is the best place on earth. We have two school-aged children who love to build sand castles on the beach and swim once (or twice) a day at our community's private kid-friendly pool.

Mari and Rob purchased this house in 2000

Why Mari and Rob chose Whidbey Island

Rob and I bought this big ole beach house just from our dear friends who have had it since 2000. We have been coming to this place ever for many years, filled it with friends, dogs, and beer-pong tournaments back when it still had shag carpet and fake-wood paneling. Since then the house has been slowly upgraded with installing proper walls, windows, and bamboo flooring (we were fine letting that shag carpet go). But it still has its beachy charm with driftwood mantels and a lovely open floorpan that's great for spending quality time with friends and family.

What makes this house unique

We love being set back away from the bustle of the beach, where we have privacy and our kids can roam the HUGE backyard and do loop-de-loops in the cul-de-sac on their bikes. Meanwhile we kick back with a glass of wine on the deck. The view of the water and mountains lets you know you're at the beach, but the size of the house lets you spread out and relax with all your friends and family (beachfront houses in our community are limited to one-story). Mutiny Bay is the best sand beach on the island!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your place is the best place in the world!!!!

We really enjoyed your great beach house, the books, the swing, toys, beach combing, and Greenbank Farms. Thanks so much!

Great place to relax and getaway from the city

  • 5 of 5

Got there with my family we where 6 people and a baby. The house is great it has everything you need to have a good time. We were really close to Bluff trail so we went for it and we didn't regret it, it was amazing. A big plus it has so many things for little kids. My 1 year old loved the little table for him. It was our first time in the island and enjoyed very much. Would recommend this place for families with kids.

Whidbey Island home welcoming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful, welcoming and comfortable, and well equipped for small children. Our 3-year-old granddaughter loved using the small table that was just her size, playing with the myriad of games available, and reading some new (to her) books from your bookcase. We appreciated the availability of the PackNPlay and the child-friendly dishes and silverware as well.

We felt right at home and enjoyed our stay as our four sons and their families flew in from all over the US to join us for a few days of rare family time. The kitchen was well equipped, and we used the grill for a wonderful dinner one night. Our daughter-in-law made fresh apple crisp from some of the apples picked from the tree in the backyard.

The bedrooms were well appointed and offered several options for sleeping arrangements. Linens were plentiful, clean and in great shape.

It was easy to relax in this environment: sitting out on the deck in the morning with a cup of coffee and a book was a favorite activity.

The community was inviting as we met several neighbors and enjoyed the beach just down the road. Shells were abundant and the sand was clean.

We also spent time at a local farmer's market and saw beautiful areas of the island on hikes and bike rides.

Rob and Mari were easy to communicate with and responded quickly to inquiries.

Would definitely recommend this home to others.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you and your families had a wonderful time on the island! We do our best to equip our home with child-friendly items so everyone has more time to play and relax than worry about things. We have school age children who pretty much grew up coming to the property loving climbing, beach combing, learning to bike etc., so we try our best to remember what it was like to have younger children. Our family was just there last week and made fresh apple crisp from the apples from our backyard too! Thank you for the tip!

Family friendly accommodations on Whidbey

  • 5 of 5

We were thrilled to find this place on Whidbey Island for our summer vacation as it looked ideal for us, our kids and grand kids. And it was! Surpassed our expectations.

Owners were very good at communicating and responded to our inquiries promptly - answering all my annoying questions.

The house looks unassuming (maybe even a little run down) from the outside, but inside it is very nice. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out and stocked with plenty of towels, sheets, toilet paper, paper towels, pots, pans, plates, glasses, bowls, (plastic for the kids), kitchen appliances, herbs, spices, oils, sauces, etc. Loved having the new (ish) grill on the deck - used it every day and it worked great. They had an extra propane tank so we didn't even have to go in search of one when we ran out of gas.

Family friendly inclusions were the Baby/toddler feeding table, port a crib with sheets (even diapers!), toddler fold out beds/couches, lots of toys, books and games inside, many sand toys, pool toys, a wagon and other outdoor games. (Ping pong table in carport).

Neighborhood is lovely, neighbors super friendly, and the location a few blocks from the beach was ideal. The grand kids loved watching the bats come out at night from over the adjacent marsh.

Beach was super nice, lots of sand for digging - plenty of rocks and shells for collecting and when the tide was out, there were areas where the water was almost warm! (The dog swam in it). Could walk the beach quite a distance at low tide.

Pool up the hill was wonderful - So much better than I had pictured it! There was a shallow area roped off for the little kids - just the right temperature and very clean. Weather was super hot when we visited (upper 80's and lower 90's), so it was great to cool off in the afternoons.

House was easy to find, not too far off the main highway and close to an amazing grocery store - Payless Foods. They had everything we needed and then some. I was surprised to find my favorite yogurt there - Ellenos - hard to find on the mainland.

We hope to return to this comfortable family friendly home - thanks Mari and Rob for offering your home for others to enjoy!

Relaxing Labor Day weekend

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay in this house! The little community makes it a perfect stay for kids, they can roam free, enjoy the beach, the pool or run around while the grown-ups relax and watch the cruise ships go by.

The beach is one of the best so close to Seattle. Driving there was effortless too, a little more than one hour from Kirkland, not bad at all for a real get-away. Lots of board games to enjoy. Great communication with the owners. Thank you Mari and Rob!

Great stay on Whidbey!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay! The house was fully equipped with all the necessary amenities. It was super close to the beach, where we all enjoyed looking for sea creatures, watching the birds, and wading in the water. We spent one of our mornings in Langley, and another in Port Townsend. The rest of our time was spent in the pool and relaxing on the beach and on the deck. The house itself was great. It had ample room for multiple family-groups and two large and inviting living room areas. The house was clean and inviting and we especially appreciated the child-friendly swing and toys! Thank you so much for proving the perfect place for our family reunion!

Would definitely stay here again!

  • 5 of 5

One of the best equipped and comfortable rentals we have stayed in. We had a party of 10 (adults and minors) and everyone had plenty of space. Loved that beach access, tennis court and pool were walking distance. Very nice gas grill that even had a spare propane tank. Everything helped our family reunion gather together and unplug from the daily routines. A bonus was the main bathroom having grab bars. Also the owners are welcoming to well behaved dogs. This allowed our whole family to gather. Thank you!
