About James Dunkleman

Life long builder, Enjoyed the chance to create a fun convenient place. All can come to enjoy a soaking bath, fireplace and games. Color full interior, Spanish architecture and decor.

James Dunkleman purchased this house in 2008

Why James Dunkleman chose New York

I created this structure with convenience, comfort, and a touch of fun to stay.

What makes this house unique

Because of the unique decor, "the 3 pages scavenger hunt" become a hit that had replaced the ski experience for some families who had stayed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our two boys had quite the adventure here -skiing seemed to take second place to the hammocks and wild west games-. Like being in "deadwood".

Very creative and definately not your ordinary lodging, Sure it will remain a family memory!

nice winter stay

  • 3 of 5

Overall our stay was very nice we rented the place for new years eve weekend. The house was clean and comfortable. We had (8) people and there was ample space. However, the property was a little tricky with the snow, the driveway was very steep and a couple of our guests and the taxis were unable to make it up the driveway-- this caused a big problem because one of our friends got stuck in the driveway. Jimmy tried his best to keep up with the snow and to keep the driveway clean and clear for us which was helpful. The Saloon is located in great valley which is about 5 miles outside of the town of Ellicottville. So cabs were 35-40 dollars per trip into town and 35-40 per trip back to the saloon which could be expensive depending on group size. Jimmy the owner was very accommodating and helpful since he lives right on site. His apartment is located above the "game room" where the ping pong and pool table are located. Unfortunately, since he lives on site, the downside is that the game room section of the rental had a use restriction (this was not mentioned in the online description) we were only allowed to utilize this room between the hours of 10:00 am until 11:00 p.m. That was kind of a bummer since we hoped to be able to utilize the game room later than 11:00 p.m. since it was New Years. However, we were able to persuade Jimmy to allow us to keep the game room open until 12:00 a.m. on New Years Eve.

There was plenty of space for everyone we had (8) people who stayed and slept there. However, we had a few of our friends that were staying close by come over and hang out. At the end of our stay, as I was leaving, Jimmy said that he was keeping track of the number of visitors we had and he asked that I pay him an additional $25.00 for each visitor we had over the eight(8) people-- an additional person fee was set forth in the rental agreement that I was presented with at the time of check-in (prior to renting the house online, I did not know there was an additional person fee and Jim did not mention this to me in our conversations prior to securing the rental). Also, his additional person charge provision in the rental agreement was very vague as it did not distinguish as to whether or not there was a charge for people staying or visiting as some of our friends only came over to visit--they did not stay through the weekend or stay both nights. I thought paying some additional money for 1-2 extra people was fair ,but not an additional charge for 4 people.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review Vanessa G Buffalo NY, i admire your courage to do so as i asked.I sand assisted everyone up the drive to the covered carport during their blizzard arrival.I would have to say very steep if i only know flat, i make it with my 2 wd hotrod Ford truck. A big problem is when spagettios blow up in the microwave. There is information on the web site that requires a work search to comprehend, no where it states free tin foil.DWI cost thousands of dollars, (Dont ask how i know, what i heard ),I ate the $54 dollar Home away booking fee upon complaint. $ 37.50 per night per person per 8 guests LOL. I can count, i just rechecked. I stayed at a hotel in Quito, Ecuador few years back, they didnt inform me a water pipe might burst,or the hotel in Dallas ,when we entered the room it had'nt been cleaned nor linens changed, hence we had to stay in a complimentary suite upgrade and drink complimentary beers. I totally under stand any heated shelter is welcome when the temperature outside, when im asleep, is 15 degrees F. Im gathering up more wood, so the next guests can also enjoy a toasty fire place. Some one broke the rubber band to my trick wind up rattlesnake egg , Danger ! Do Not Open set up packet ,daggonette ! Thank you , May your New Year be Happy and Prosperous, God Bless America ! Awesome Weekend

  • 5 of 5

The Scavenger Saloon is, well, different, but awesome. The decorations are crazy, but it makes it entertaining. The fire place is nice. Heated floors are awesome. Very comfortable lodging. The hot tub is more of a big jacuzzi bath tub in the living room, but it was still really nice after skiing. The owner kept the drive plowed, didn't complain when we were late to checkout, and was very helpful and friendly. If your looking for a weekend getaway with your friends, I highly recommend the scavenger saloon.

Wonderful vacation before a big departure abroad!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Irene and Jimmy,

Your house is so amazing! You cannot imagine how much fun I had staying here...taking pictures everywhere, trying the costumes on, playing the "marimba" (a music instrument from Ecuador, trying to find every item in the Scavenger Hunt, being photographed in the coffin with shovel and hammer hahaha.

I will always treasure beautiful memories of my stay here and you can be sure I will come back!

I had a nice time going up to the trailer home, sleeping upstairs and doing my Yoga every morning.

THANK YOU Irene and Jimmy for being who are and for giving me the chance to live a wonderful vacation before a big departure abroad.

Good Times

  • 3 of 5

The cabin is very unique and enjoyable. There are a few issues to note...a while I am sure it is fantastic in winter, be cautious in summer. While the temps did climb to an unusual mark while we were there, it is important to note there is no AC. Also, the bathroom(s) offered very little privacy.

This is a great place for short stays but would be cautious for long period of stays.
