Guestbook comments from the owner

We had so much fun over this week of the fourth of July. The resort had a fishing rodeo on the morning of the fourth for all the kids. They had prizes for everyone and they had pancakes, donuts and coffee. It was great fun. The cottage was perfect for us and clean. Thank you for a great time. We have already booked for next summer. Quaint, clean, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is quaint, clean, and the perfect location for a relaxing, fun-filled week. The beach on Hamlin Lake was clean and we were able to use the boat slip for our boat. Some of the highlights of this vacation: Going to the dunes for the day, floating down the "lazy" river, House of Flavor, Barnharts Restaurant.

You Get What You Pay For

  • 3 of 5

Strong good and bad here. Where else can you have your own place with a full kitchen and a fire pit for about the same price as a good hotel room? It's your classic old up North cottage -- small, outdated ( only a few outlets, no A/C, etc.), houses all around and bad well water. Just what you'd expect from anyplace like this for this money. The location for the state park and other places is great. It does offer wireless and access to Netflix for the kids. Read the description carefully and I'll say it plainly -- the lake is not in sight and the shared beach is a short walk away, accessed via an easement between two neighbors houses. We had a huge grease fire in the dirty grille, the water went out all morning (the landlord reimbursed us a nights stay), the fridge was unplugged and didn't get cool for 3-4 hours and remember to bring EVERYTHING. Don't count on a roll of paper towel, dish soap, etc. All of this may be moot because the for sale sign is out at the road and by the house, so it may or may not be available to be rented next summer.

Lovely Stay

  • 5 of 5

Stayed 2 nights...if your looking for what they are advertising, you will like it :) If you are looking for a JW Marriott this is not. Like some of the other reviews I have read, you can pick apart anything, if you have all the time in the world to write bad reviews. Very cozy & it was exactly what I thought is was going to be. We will stay again, if we are seeking a Quaint Cottage in the woods, that s very close to water.

I recently stayed there with a friend and our two children. Ludington is a beautiful place to stay and has a wonderful beach at Lake Michigan. The cottage was decorated well and appeared charming at first glance. However, the place was filthy and the floors were heavily covered in sand. The sinks were very dirty. We even found old food in the drain. The bathroom shower sinks, and toilet were stained with orange/brown from the water. There were cob webs everywhere. When we moved the futon to open it up we found it to have dirt in the crease. There were not enough towels. Also, there was not a beach nearby as advertised.

When we arrived the fire pit had been rusted through. My friend called the owner and she dropped off a new fire pit in the box. She didn't even put it together. I guess she thought we would put it together. When I called to discuss the filth, I had explained that I could help clean it up, but there were no supplies to do so. She cut me off and suggested I sweep it and use paper towels to clean the floor, but did not offer to send anyone to clean it appropriately. I do not feel that I should have to do this on my vacation. She tried to convince me that it was due to the open windows. However, this dirt had been there for a long time. Even the bunk beds were dirty. Walking barefoot was not optional. We pulled "clean" sheets out of the trunk in the living room and they were stained and dirty. The list goes on and on. We had no idea we would need to supply our own drinking water. I think if it had been advertised appropriately as a camping cabin maybe I wouldn't feel jaded. When we left and began to pack, there were mouse droppings on the stove. The owner assured me a professional cleaning company had cleaned and bleached a day prior to our stay, however if it was, they lied to her. We had a great time despite this, and we totally enjoyed sitting out by the fire. The reality is that we spent very little time in this cottage. We were out all day each day, but if it had rained, there was no cable. Great internet, and a TV there, but not hooked up properly.

I really did like this cottage. It was quiet, peaceful and charming. The water issue needs addressed and the cottage cleaned. I really hope the next person has a better experience.

Could've been great

  • 1 of 5

On our arrival, we initially thought the cottage was great, but, after a quick walk-through we were disappointed. We found the cottage to be in great need of a cleaning (bugs in light fixtures, corn in sink, dirty linens, dirty floors, sheet on futon obviously not washed). The owner was notified of this but asked that we sweep and then wipe up the dirt with a paper towel. There were basically no cleaning supplies in the home and linens were EXTREMELY limited...and old. We were lucky to be there during nice weather, because there was no AC. This was not advertised, and it would've been nice to know ahead of time. The outdoor fire pit was completely rusted out though

the owner did replace this during our stay. There was no cable as advertised and the owner stated she had changed to an Internet service after our rental agreement was signed which required a computer and cord to hook-up (which wasn't provided.) We were not notified of this prior to check-in and not provided with any solution during our stay. The water is very hard and rusty, so it would've been helpful to know we needed to bring water for drinking/cooking. Lastly, being unfamiliar with the area, we had no idea how to access the "private beach" as advertised in the listing and wouldve benefited from some instructions left for guests. FYI, this cabin is not beachfront as the pictures will have you believe, the water is only barely visible from the kitchen window through trees and other homes. The only plus side is its close proximity to downtown Ludington and the state park. This cabin has great potential. It is cute and tastefully decorated. I didn't expect a lot for the price, but I expected a clean environment that lived up to the info provided in the listing and it failed both of those expectations.

Owner's Response: As this cottage is in the woods, dust and sand comes in through the windows when they are open. We have a professional cleaning service clean after each renter, bleach floors, bathroom etc. and bring new linens. The fire pit was immediately replaced, a broom was brought to this client as I was not aware that the previous broom was taken from the cottage. I encourage future renters to sweep out dust and sand on a regular basis for your own comfort. In the description it states there is a couple minute walk to the beach. None of the cottages in this resort are lakefront. Our association does have a wonderful beach that I hope future renters enjoy! Our advertisement does not indicate that we have AC as the vast majority of cottages on Hamlin Lake do not as well.
