Overview

Property Details

Updated: Dec 4, 2016
Cottage, 2 bedrooms , 1 Bath, Sleeps 6

A fully furnished two-bedroom, one-bath cottage. Old World charm, with knotty pine throughout, beamed ceiling, hand-scraped birch flooring, Persian rugs, antiques and original art. Two decks, upper and lower, with a propane BBQ, table and chairs for "dining out." A yard in back with regulation horseshoe pits. An exterior sauna for four! (see more below.) A disc golf course 100 feet from your front door. A city park with playground 300 feet from your door. A ten-to-twelve-minute walk to Multnomah Village, with its charming coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, antique shops, art galleries, boutiques and gift shops. And all within a ten-minute drive of downtown! (Check with us to see more pictures.)

The house is filled with the things required for living: bedding, towels and washcloths, soap and shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, a filled medicine cabinet, hair dryer, dish and laundry detergent, vinegar and oil, sugar and spices, coffee and tea, on and on. It is meant to require of you only that you bring your clothes and personal items. And, of course, the main ingredients of the meals you plan to prepare.

For families with small children, we have: a cradle, stair gates, a stroller, a playpen, highchairs, and lots of toys, playthings and books for all ages. One of the side closets is a child-scale play area.

The kitchen is small, but has a double sink, microwave, coffee maker, dish washer and everything required to prepare and serve meals. The table and space available will seat six.

The main floor living area has a leather couch/hide-a-bed, table and easy chair. Also on the main floor is the large bathroom, wheelchair accessible, and the garage, which has been semi-converted into a bonus room with a double bed and a single trundle bed.

On the second floor are the two bedrooms. The east bedroom has two single beds in an alcove and a queen-size futon in the main area which, during the day, can serve as seating for TV watching. Off the east bedroom is a deck, facing east, which makes a great spot to sit with your coffee to watch the morning sunrise. The west bedroom has a queen-size bed and desk, and a TV with built-in DVD player/VCR.

Perfect Place to Stay in Portland

  • 5 of 5

Our family and I stayed in the Multnomah Guest House for eight days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The house is actually bigger than it looks in the pictures, and it is very clean and well stocked with more than enough to keep you entertained during your stay. Our two young sons particularly enjoyed the two playrooms tucked in a tiny room off each of the upstairs bedrooms! The owners are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have a pleasant stay. I loved the location, too--quiet neighborhood, but very close to Safeway when I needed to run out to pick up odds and ends. Would definitely stay here again!

the greatest place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at this wonderful place. It is a full house, two stories, with every comfort you can imagine. The owners stock the refrigerator and the cupboards. They are a charming, fun couple who come and chat with you and give you information about everything you need. The location is perfect: 3 miles from downtown, but walking distance to stores, and restaurants. They also provide movies, books and puzzles. It is a great place to stay. Susan and Rick

Exceptional experience.

  • 5 of 5

My only hesitation is giving a 5 star review is that the cottage will be fully booked from now on, so that we won't be able to stay there again when we return. The scene is a garage, remodeled into the 2 story cottage, next to the owners' childhood home, where her parents ran a small dairy. The decor is knotty pine, reminiscent of a Small Swiss chalet. Everything is practically brand new and works perfectly, the electric sauna is so new it still smells of cedar, and the refrigerator was stocked with enough breakfast food for a siege. Trudy and Dennis are sweet, interesting people, whom we wished we could ship back to Hawaii with us and keep for next door neighbors. The neighborhood is one of those hidden areas in Portland where real people still live, and gentrification is still being kept at bay. One evening, we went to one of the local supermarkets, bought some local craft beer, came back to the cottage and laid out some snacks, and watched four or five foursomes play frisbee golf in the old cow pasture next door. Highly entertaining!

'Country in the City' and Perfect for Families with Young Children

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time during our four night stay at the Multnomah Guest House in Portland. Dennis and Trudi were incredibly welcoming and gracious hosts for our entire stay, even going so far as to stock the kitchen ahead of time (including fresh flowers) and send us on our way with a personal, handwritten thank you note at the end. The house is very well equipped in terms of kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and sleeping supplies and the unique furnishings give it a charming and cozy character. It was quite a pleasant surprise to find the bedroom nooks filled with toys and games for kids (what a thoughtful use of sections with low head space) and there are supplies galore (play pen, strollers, high chairs) for parents with young children. The house lives up to the name 'Country in the City' as it sits at the end of the street near a park (and disc golf course) which gives the whole place a nice 'tucked away' feel. Stores are close by and freeway access is easy. We highly recommend The Multnomah Guest House, especially to families and hope that we are able to return someday.

Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This country cottage in the city is a perfect place to stay while visiting Portland. It is clean, cozy, and inviting. Dennis and Trudi have thought of everything for a traveling family - basic food in the kitchen, plenty of bathroom necessities, laundry supplies, sheets, towels, and blankets galore. There are outdoor games, as well as toys inside. My husband and I travelled to Portland with our three teenagers to visit family and sightsee. We had a wonderful time, in part because we could come back to this lovely cottage each night. There was plenty of room for three teenagers to spread out, as well as many movies and books to peruse. The neighborhood is quiet and Multnomah Village is a short walk away with restaurants, coffee shops, and a toy store. There is a also a grocery store within walking distance. My husband and son enjoyed a game of disc golf across the street. We were only 5 miles from downtown Portland, an hour or so from the Oregon coast, and about 40 minutes to the falls. If we ever travel to Portland again, this is where we want to stay!
