Charming and private
Rustic cabin with all the comforts of home. We had a few cool evenings and was happy to have a nice fire.
When it was humid at night, the ceiling fan and floor fan in bedroom made it very comfy.
Tub was a little slippery and needs a mat which was mentioned to Bill. It was a great few restful days. Enjoyed our meals on the screened porch.
Old fashioned lake cottage
This property suited us very well. It is small but quite adequately supplied. It is the old fashioned kind of lake cottage - dark, lots of knotty pine, but quiet, cool and comfortable with a lovely screened porch. The house was clean and for a cabin in the woods, remarkably bug free. Bed linens and towels are not supplied so you have to remember to bring those. The water access is across the road and down the hill and is just a narrow grass and rock right-of-way to the water - no beach - which is great for a swim in the lake, but not really a place for a long beach day with kids. There is a town beach in close, but driving distance, where you would have to pay for a day pass.
Country hillside cottage
We had a very nice stay. Close to Fays boat yard (make a reservation for boat rental in advance!) and the town beach. 3 other swimming areas just a short walk away. noce residential area with many friendly people. We were surprised at how quiet it was! Accommodations were good with everything you could need in the kitchen. Nice sharp knives and cooking utensils were available (we like to cook!)
Would certainly stay again. Also, if you like a good breakfast and don't mind a bit of a wait, make sure to try kitchen cravings for breakfast or lunch. Amazing!
A real getaway place
The cabin is a wonderful place to get away from everything. Located within minutes of everything you would need, including a wonderful roadside restaurant/ice cream shop, it is still removed enough that a nice quiet evening is there for the taking. Within a few minutes walk you can have your feet in the lake, enjoying a swim or a lake side sunset. The cabin is well furnished, with a comfortable feel and charm that makes everything else seem unimportant. It is a short drive to Gunstock mountain for the days of skiing or hiking, and the wood burning fire place would be perfect to come back to in the winter months.
This property is just charming. It truly is a family camp cabin that appears to have received many years of love and memories. We loved the great stone fireplace and woodwork. It's well-appointed for the price range and is exceptionally clean. The 4-piece bathroom is adequate, though the cold water handle leaks and zaps you in the shin a little. The bedrooms are reasonably spacious with plenty of storage. While you could probably sleep four children, if two are willing to share the queen, it would be wise to plan to be out of the cabin early. The seating is limited indoors. We spent most of our time at the cabin gathered on the screened-in porch. The cabin is center to everything around the lake, and was the perfect location for us. You're afforded a good deal of privacy and the Varney Point community is very peaceful. Working with the realty company was very easy, and Kevin provided great directions. We received our deposit back promptly. This is a great place to use as a start/stop point for your daily adventures, and is not really made for hanging out inside.
You do have to spend some time exploring around the cabin to figure some things out. Typically, this would be sort of fun, but we purchased some things we couldn't initially find only to discover them later. The largest frustration was that the listing states 2 beaches close by. There is a beach within walking distance to the cabin, but it's for local residents only. You can purchase a temporary pass at town hall, but not on the weekends. When you arrive on a Saturday afternoon, that's a huge disappointment for children (and for weary parents). The public beaches are in such high demand that I'd recommend waiting until Sunday, and go early. We never did find a beach around 500 feet away.
There are plenty of local places to buy groceries, eat out or explore. There are a grocery store and a discount store within 5 minutes. Closer still is Patrick's pub (try the seafood chowder, yum!) and the Wine'ing Butcher (for awesome marinated tips!). The owners of the cabin are thoughtful enough to keep a stash of local menus to choose from. There is a boatyard with weekly dock rentals at the end of the road, and plenty of local things to do within 15-20 minutes. Even a trip to the seacoast or Boston is very doable.
Overall, we had a great time during our stay, and we would recommend this cabin for most people. The rate was exceptional for the area, and you just can't beat the setting!
There are three swimming areas near Monterey Lodge. New, improved visibility from the camp allows you to see one area from the screened in porch. It is directly down the hillside. A path is located to the right of the neighbors house at the bottom of the driveway. A sign points "To the lake". Guests can swim there, just follow the rules. A second area with a day dock is located at the bottom of Heights Road, down the lawn area from the stone memorial seat between two waterfront homes. Again, guests should follow the rules. The public swimming area at the base on Varney Point Road does require a beach pass, which is obtained from the town to access via car, or you can try to walk onto the beach area without a pass.
