About Jim Casey

Caryn and Jim Casey have been married for 33 years (as of 2015). We have two grown daughters, a small dog and two grand-dogs. We love Lindstrom and being at the lake as a contrast to our busy lives in Burbank, CA. Jim has a background in architecture and sells real estate in California.

Jim Casey purchased this house in 1999

Why Jim Casey chose Minnesota

It was love at first sight. We found the house quite by accident. Jim was doing research comparing different real estate websites back in 1999 for a seminar he was giving to a real estate board in Florida. Jim was an internationally recognized technology speaker and trainer in the real estate industry just as the internet and digital technology was changing the real estate business. Our dream house scenario was an older home with wrap around porches on a lake and within 45 minutes of the Twin Cities. Fridhem popped up on his computer screen and the family jumped in the car and drove to the property more out of curiosity than anything else. When we walked up the front sidewalk we were captivated. Because of the original condition of the home and the unfinished attic we knew we could make this a special home for our family and for our retirement (you can live entirely on the first floor if necessary). That same year our two daughters announced their dreams of acting so we packed them up and took them to Burbank to attend school and audition for television and film. Jim spent over a year remodeling the home and commuting back and forth to California until the whole family returned for summer vacation. We never imagined we'd be turning the house into a vacation rental, but it has been a wonderful experience for us sharing the house and still getting to enjoy it throughout the year.

What makes this house unique

Walk to downtown on our tree lined street and enjoy privacy and incredible views of the lake from our large deck. The house is large and yet features lots of little, intimate spaces to congregate or enjoy some alone time. Live in a historic home with all the amenities you'd expect from a 5 star hotel including an exercise room, free WIFI and a smart TV for your Netflix and Amazon Prime viewing pleasure. With a local winery, many restaurants, antique shopping, nearby trails, tennis courts and golf, not to mention the wonderful lake and trophy fishing, everyone can find something to pass the time. Fridhem is a local treasure which everyone in the community has heard stories about in its over 100 year history. We purposely do NOT rent the house for large events like weddings because we feel it is best for family get togethers and quiet vacations. Our friendly neighbors are there when you need them, but will give you your privacy. We hope you will treat them with the same friendly respect!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family loved staying at the old Swedish cottage on the lake right in the heart of Lindstrom. It has a beautiful deck and we were able to rent a pontoon to bring to the dock only a few blocks away. The cottage was also convenient to walk right through downtown Lindstrom for shopping. We would recommend!

Wonderful Week!

  • 5 of 5

This is the sixth year we have taken our grandchildren, Ethan and Ava, with their parents to spend a week here. It is always a wonderful time for everyone, lots of space, a great lake for fishing, a nice deck in the back for grilling and even a small beach area for a small fire to make s'mores. The house is comfortable and the grandchildren love walking to the park, swimming beach or even to the bakery. Everything is close and convenient. It has become a family tradition.

Owner's Response: Lynn, has it been 6 years? You are officially our longest running guest and we couldn't be happier. Thanks for helping us to be able to keep the house and to keep it up. We hope you will continue to enjoy Fridhem for many years to come! Same week next summer? ;)

Perfect place for my family to come together.

  • 5 of 5

My family came from California, Nebraska, Washington, and Illinois. We had grandparents, adults, and children. There was plenty of room for us to get together and play games, eat, talk, and for people to get away and be alone. We went to the cute town of Lindstrom, had BBQ on the deck and shared meals, found great food and grocery stores and rented a pontoon boat. We swam at the property and went to the beach with the grandkids. We just had the best time and the house was perfect for us. Thank you Jim Casey for the opportunity!

Charming, spacious and great location

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a reasonably priced, excellently located, home for our extended family to vacation together and we found it!! Plenty of space for our whole family, inside and out. The kitchen was well equipped and a great alternative to eating out all the time. The small town location also provided sight-seeing and shopping options. We were able to easily visit the Twin Cities during our stay and still enjoy fishing and boating. The dock was excellent for the boat. The only issue we had outdoors was that the beach area was quite small and the kayak and canoe provided were partially submerged in the water. They were quite muddy and we were unable to use them. Perhaps a rack to place them on so they are out of the water would be helpful. The owner was very responsive to our inquiries and we would definitely consider staying there again. Highly recommended!!!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Believe it or not, there was 10' more beach just a month ago when we put the dock and boats in. We've had so much rain! We'll figure out something during this high water to keep the boats high and dry. Thanks for coming, we hope to have you stay again!

Great Time

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with another couple and a friend spent a few days here in late April to celebrate our friend's anniversary. We loved this place. The "cottage" was very large but cozy and well cared for. We spent most of our time in the kitchen/family room area - it overlooked the lovely Lindstrom Lake where we saw loons several times. The weather was rather rainy and quite cold so we were unable to use the back yard but there was a lovely deck back there that would have been enjoyable in warm weather. We also enjoyed being so close to the things we came to the area to see - i.e. Stillwater, which we loved, and the Interstate State Parks in WI and MN. We found great restaurants as well! The owner had an excellent booklet prepared to tell all about the cottage as well as the area. The only problem we had was wheelchair accessibility - it was very difficult getting my husband's wheelchair in and out of the house and we were not able to use the grab bar in the bathroom. But this didn't mar the trip and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The neighborhood was very quiet and peaceful and Lindstrom is a cute town. Highly recommend!!
