The Overlook on South Toe River

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,400 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, 8 Sleeps

18 acres, 2 bedroom, 2 full bathrooms, cottage with over 2000' sq living space, and your own 400' of river frontage and personal swimming hole.

Late on a summer day you watched as the shaded green hues of evening drew their veil over the valley and the setting sun highlighted distant Celo Knob. You could hear the bullfrog call to the fireflies down by the pond where the old mare had, after a last long drink, headed for a barn far off. With the windows open you had to draw the covers up to your chin during the night. In the morning you wandered down to the rivers edge with your cup of coffee in hand. As you approached, the trout scattered. Puppy couldn't resist the temptation and got thoroughly wet. The mist on the river began to burn off as the sun climbed higher in the sky. No TV tonight, instead you'll have bonfire down by the river. In no hurry, you ambled back up the driveway past acres of summer blooms and lawn, thinking "I'm glad I don't have to mow". Instead, you spent the afternoon floating in an old inner-tube down the river all the way to Patience Park, someone was there to meet you and give you a ride home.

Just a few miles south of the cabin is the Mt Mitchell Golf Course, rated 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, and voted #1 semi-private course in the region by the readers of the Asheville Citizen Times. Also right next to the Golf Course, than a half mile further away is the trail head into the Pisgah National forest, a trail that leads up to the Roaring Fork waterfall, one of the regions prettiest falls, and one of the easiest to hike to, only a half mile of old forest roadway. Mt Mitchell can be reached from the cabin by automobile in less than 15 minutes.

Needs some updating and TLC

  • 2 of 5

Great comfie beds. Beautiful scenery. Washer broken. Lots of spiders in the house. Cabin needs lots of TLC.

Owner's Response: The washer had a power failure from all the rain we received and just had to be unplugged and plugged back in. It is a brand new washer! Went to investigate the claim of spiders and only found one dead one but could of been more earlier as it had rained for eight days straight. This is a beautiful cabin isolated from neighbors on a mtn .with awesome views, not sure of what TLC, is meant for??

A great place to visit in the winter

  • 5 of 5

If you’re coming to the mountains of NC at night… try not to come to the mountains of NC at night if you don’t know your way. If, however, you end up in the dark on the side of the road with a flashlight, don’t listen to the Google Gal who will tell you this house is on the opposite side of the road. Look for the mailbox that says Overlook, go up the driveway, past the red building, to the house at the top. Ta-da! You’re there, and it’s worth the trip.

We visited The Overlook in December, and the beauty of a winter vacation is:

A) Less sweat during hikes B) A fireplace! C) We could see the actual mountains D) Less people.

1. Bedrooms – Main bedroom has Tempurpedic mattress which was firmer than I’m used to but fine. The down comforters do a great job of keeping you warm and there are lots of pillows. Turn sideways in bed for an excellent view of the mountains.

2. Bathrooms – Love the built-in heaters! Plenty of fluffy towels. There is a note that says water takes a while to warm up so plan ahead, but then there is plenty of hot water.

3. Fireplace – Easy to use and warmed the place quickly.

4. Kitchen – I have kitchen envy. Huge, and there is everything you need. Nice big tables in kitchen and living room.

5. Hot tub – Perfect size. If you only have 1 or 2 people going in, flip half open and then you won’t have to mess with getting the whole cover back on. Lovely, open view of the stars.

6. Heat – The radiant floor heat is controlled with a thermostat, unit in the kitchen is best operated with the remote. We tried the wall thermostat for that without much luck. Remote works fine.

7. View – Magnificent! I would never get anything done if I lived there, I’d just sit and stare at the mountains all day. See my suggestion for lying in bed and viewing.

8. The River/Creek – I didn’t get down to look but my honey said it was nice with a sandy area.

9. Washer and dryer worked great and are wonderful for those of us (okay, not me, but my honey) who want to pack light and re-wear clothes.

We talked to Gary the manager and Richard the owner and both men were very nice and helpful. Burnsville is a cute little town with a fabulous Ingles grocery story. Good hiking trails nearby with gorgeous waterfalls. I highly recommend this property for a visit. My only suggestion, as always to every property owner; please use unscented laundry soap. The Overlook was a delightful vacation, and we’ll be back.

Loved the views! Pics do not do it justice!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the mountain views from the living room, while sitting by the fire, and the hot tub! We enjoyed the comfortable beds & linens, cooking in the well appointed kitchen with both an outside gas and charcoal grill, heated floors, cabin decor and more! We visited Asheville and other small towns, Mt Mitchell and hiked the AT trail along Roan mountain- just more incredible views! The only downsides are your responsible for taking the trash from the property and it’s about a 15-20minute drive each way, and it’s closed on Sundays. Also, when checking out your responsible for stripping beds and putting in laundry room or starting laundry, and wiping down counters in bathrooms- just seemed a little much. That being said, I would still stay in this property again.

Beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

The view from the porch/living room was amazing! We enjoyed our stay so much. They had everything there we needed. The kitchen was awesome for cooking and the hot tub was wonderful to relax in after a long day of hiking. It was the perfect place to stay for our wedding on Mt Mitchell.
