Nice house to spend a week in at the beach!

  • 4 of 5

Let me first say, our family has stayed off and on a week at a time on Harbor Island since around 2003. We've stayed in all sorts of different condos and houses during our visits, typically through the usual rental agency near the entrance itself, so we're very familiar with the area and lay of the land as far as the island itself. It's a very private, laid back and quiet place to spend a vacation. You're looking at about 20 minutes to get back to "civilization" if you need something from Walmart or a grocery store, so keep that in mind. This information is not really part of the review, just to express our familiarity with the area.

As for the house. It's in the marshy/wooded area when you first get onto the island. A very quiet and calm one-way road in and out. The pictures are not great on VRBO for this particular property, but it is very nice on the inside and outside. The master suite is very large, with a huge bathroom and double sinks. The walk-in closet is also very nice but was crowded with an infant playpen which we had to break down to have room for our clothes. There was also a lot of items left (presumably) from previous renters in the closet, so the space seemed limited. There were plenty of towels to use and some toiletries to use on arrival.

The dining room is very nice and roomy with plenty of room to have a nice dinner. The kitchen is also very nice and well-stocked with things you might have forgotten at the grocery store. It suffers from common issues at rental houses like dull knives and cheap/worn-out small appliances. All in all it worked for us very well.

The living area is large and comfortable, but the sectional couch is past it's prime and really needs replacement.

The other two smaller bedrooms and bathroom for them were sufficient and comfortable for our children to use. They had no complaints.

The property manager, Robert, is excellent in what he does.

The Dish Network TV service is horrible. We woke up each morning to no signal after the rains. Not a deal breaker for us but the kids would have enjoyed it.

The WiFi is horrible. Very slow. Thankfully we had unlimited data on our phones.

The landline service was not functional; not that we needed it, just noted.

The ceiling fan on the screened porch is broken and would not turn on.

The golf cart is good but really needs a windshield & headlights.

The property really needs window treatments.

All in all, however, a very good property!

Owner's Response: Mark was a real pleasure to work with on this rental. He made me aware, once he had returned home from his stay, of some of the things he pointed out in his review that I would like to address below: First, I would like to thank Mark for his kind comment within his review about my service as manager of the property. The walk-in closet, in the back master bedroom suite, apparently had a crib that had been fully left up and not broken down. That was just an oversight on my part. Like other rental homes on the Island, owners sometimes do have some items stored in closets on shelves, etc.. That's what Mark would have been referring to. That said, it is still a very spacious closet for renter use. No doubt, things get worn down more quickly in homes offered for rental. That can easily happen with kitchen utensils and appliances. As well, furniture wears more quickly with rentals. You typically do not have the opportunity to take care of some things though until the end of the busy rental season such as replacing furniture fabric. I mentioned to Mark, in an email to him once he returned home, that the Dish Network TV works fine; however, storms and cloudy weather may sometimes interfere with the outside disk getting the best signal. In such cases, a simple adjustment outside solves the problem. If he would have notified me during his stay, I would have told him to do so. The WiFi service admittedly may not be as fast as someone would like. Obviously, the cordless land-line phone went bad prior to Mark's arrival. I actually verified it had gone bad as it would not hold a charge. The ceiling fan on the back porch still works; however, the "pull chain" needs to be replaced as it was missing. That was the problem not allowing it to work. The golf cart may not be fanciest on the Island but it sure is reliable in getting you where you need to go! Hurricanes over the last two seasons have made many owners on the Island think twice about spending thousands on replacement carts. Only due to this, was the decision made to purchase a used cart without lights or a windshield. Previous carts at the house had such. As all who rent "Sea Island Cotton," I am very grateful to Mark for allowing me to handle this rental for him! Robert

We had a great stay at Sea Island Cotton!

The house was beautiful and well cared for. The golf cart made for easy access to the beach and fun trips around the island. Everything worked well in the house and it was very comfortable. We enjoyed the community among the island and the relaxing, low-key atmosphere.

Wonderful stay at Sea Island Cotton

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property located in a beautiful resort community. Home is very comfortable, clean, and modern. Plenty of kitchen supplies on hand. Beds are nice and comfortable.

Explored Harbor Island via golf cart. Had fun at the beach, crabbing, and fishing. Highly recommend visiting Hunting Island State Park, especially if you enjoy hiking and exploring the beach. Only 2 trails were open at the time, but the trail to the beach was cleared.

Make sure you stop and get our groceries in town as there are no grocery stores in the immediate area. There is a great fish market down the street and a fun local restaurant, Johnson Creek Tavern, down the street as well.

Harbor Island is a great place if you simply want to enjoy the natural setting, hang out at the beach, fish, and spend time with your family. If you are looking for a lot of commercial activities such as putt putt, shopping, and fine dining, Harbor Island is not the place for you. You can journey into Beaufort for the retail experience, but we thoroughly enjoyed staying on the island instead.

Robert was extremely helpful in proving information about the area and checking in to make sure we were having a great time.

highly recommend this property and would definitely return again.

Up-to-date and very comfortable. Large dining table and very comfortable seating area for TV. Large Bedrooms. Golf cart was fun but it could have used a windshield to block the cold. Everyone enjoyed our stay.

While the setting on Harbor Island (approximately 1700 acres) provides a relaxing atmosphere, the active minded can readily take advantage of the Island's Beach & Raquet Club - It offers tennis courts, large swimming pool, wading pool for infants, playground, sand volley ball court, food/gift shop area, and, exercise facility! Of course, you have complete access to the beach area on Harbor Island! All of this is just a short drive from the house in either the golf cart or your personal car and comes free with your rent at no additional charge!

While you can spend many hours "just riding around in the golf cart" provided, you may want to try your hand at crabbing in the area of the Island designated for that. You can even leave your trap while you go out to the beach and "surf cast" for the big catch! Of course, there is much enjoyment in just walking on the beach looking out at the shrimp boats with "nets extended" and seeing the groups of dolphins "playing in the water" off in the distance!

When you are ready to venture off Harbor Island, there are convenient locations nearby for "putting-in" your personal boat or "hearing the spin" of your line as you drop a fishing line with your favorite lure attached! There is even a location nearby for pier fishing.

Do you feel like visiting the only light house in South Carolina where you are allowed to actually walk to the top and look out for miles and miles? Well, you are in luck as the 5,000 acre Hunting Island State Park is right beside Harbor Island.

Nearby "Ladys Island" has two grocery stores supplying everything you will need for "roughing it" back at the beach house!

The downtown area of Beaufort awaits you with an abundance of history, art, culture, and natural beauty. It is the second oldest city in South Carolina, with more homes on the National Historic Register than any town its size! Carriage and walking tours are available providing the background history of the "Spanish mossed" neighborhoods where homes date back to the 1700s. This beautiful downtown area also provides you with a shopping district where antique, boutique, and, art gallery shops abound along with casual eateries and fine restaurants!

For those looking to add a perfect day trip to their schedule, the historic cities of Savannah, Ga and Charleston, SC are both short drives from downtown Beaufort!

Now, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and make your reservation at the "Sea Island Cotton" - let the fun begin!!
