Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a quaint bungalow with a living room, dining room, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, a small fully equipped kitchen (minus the aluminum foil, which would have been helpful) and a wonderful spa room with an electric fireplace, lounge chairs and Jacuzzi large enough for 2 people. The bedroom on the second floor has an electric fireplace, a larger bathroom than the first floor and a cute nook with a window-seat. There is a cute area in the back of the house for eating outside with a great side BBQ grill. The area extends through a meadow area and leads down to the river (no access to river though because of tall plants). Some rooms in the house have dim-lighting features (like the spa room), which is nice. The house is filled with books and magazines, and there is a wonderful front indoor porch with lots of comfy chairs that overlooks the quiet street. There is a faint smell of cat in the bungalow (strongest in the back indoor porch) that I never quite got used to, but we still highly recommend this place.

There is now wifi at the bungalow, albeit a little slow. Not many cell phone services work in Albany, but you can hook up your phone to the wifi and have service. There are no grocery stores in Albany, so be prepared to drive about 20 minutes for fruits and vegetables.

The owners were always available and helped us with whatever we needed. We found plenty to do in the area. There is kayaking/canoeing/tubing within 5 minutes of walking from the bungalow. There are dairy farms that we just drove up to and learned about the farms from their owners. There are many cheese factories/breweries and cute towns all around to explore. Cave of the Mounds is a wonderful attraction about an hour away.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the 5 star review and recommendation from these guests. They really seemed to enjoy the River Cottage and the Green County area. However, there are a couple issues they referenced in the review that we feel need to be addressed. As to the lack of aluminum foil in the kitchen, that will be available immediately. The wifi was just installed. We queried each guest about how it is working and the response has always been "fine". Cell phone service is somewhat limited. Albany is a small town in the country. High speed internet and mobile services are just arriving. For the record, we have owned the cottage for seven years and there has never been a cat in the house. During that time we have never had a complaint. However, we recognize that everyone has different levels of sensitivity, so we will aggressively take steps to eliminate any odors. River Cottage has been rented almost every weekend this summer and the guest response is overwhelmingly positive. As the owners of this property and Albany House B&B we work very hard to ensure that our guests are happy with the experience and we appreciate constructive suggestions for improvement.

The perfect group getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully appointed bungalow, nestled in a quiet town in a scenic area of southern Wisconsin. Since I am familiar with this area I would not describe it as a "dying town" but yes, it is quiet. So if you are looking for nightlife it's probably not the destination for you.

But if you are looking to get away from a busy area (like Chicago in our case), the River Cottage is the perfect place to host friends and/or family for a restful vacation. We (5 adults) came here for a birthday celebration and some of our relatives were able to stay at Albany House across the street, which worked out perfectly. We had no trouble preparing and serving meals for everyone. The owners are very accommodating.

We mostly stayed on the property, but we did make some field trips to buy locally made/grown cheese, beer and produce. And we stopped on our drive up to get groceries, so we were all set. We all thought that the amenities in the house (and the grill outside) were exactly what we needed.

Did I mention how beautiful the house is? It's like something from a spread in House Beautiful magazine. And so comfortable!

I can't wait to find a new reason to return.

Beautiful vacation home in a dying town.

  • 4 of 5

This home is stunningly renovated, appointed & furnished... except for some key smaller elements. Everything you could want in a vacation home... except for the kitchen amenities, home entertainment & the town in which it is located. The kitchen is tiny, poorly laid out, contains no counter space, a tiny stove & woefully inadequate cooking & baking tools. The owner isn't prepared for guests to actually cook multiple meals here despite the fact that there are no restaurants or grocery stores. There are no wine glasses, blender, electric mixer, pasta pot, larger serving bowls, plastic wrap, foil, basic spices, sugar, salt & pepper, casserole dishes, cookie sheet or 2-3 quart sauce pot to name a few missing items. There is also no radio, stereo or WI FI or internet connection. There were no kleenex, paper towels or napkins. On the plus side the house is sumptuous inside & out with excellent linens, furnishings, a delightful patio & all season front porch & a master suite & first floor tub room to die for. There is NO entertainment in Albany itself & New Glarus is 15-20 minutes away. We canoed a lovely stretch of the Sugar River & there is a bike trail in town that charges a fee for use. So keep these things in mind. The owners also have a fantastic B&B across the street, the Albany House. Both this property & the Albany House would be much more attractive in an area with greater immediate access to activities.
