About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, 4 Sleeps

Welcome to our cabin at Maggie's Farm, just 45 minutes from the Asheville airport and all that Asheville has to offer. We have designated wifi service for internet and internet cell phone calling for those who need to stay in touch. Our little town is called Brevard, it is the county seat and a very quaint college town with sidewalk cafes, restaurants, breweries, art and music with lot of outdoor activities on the rivers and mountain trails. We are close to all of the Western North Carolina attractions, The Biltmore, Sliding Rock, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Breweries, Maggie Valley, Cherokee Casino, Hendersonville, Waynesville, mountain hiking and biking, canoe, tubing, zip lining trout fishing and more. It's a place you will want to return over and over again. We have a stocked pond with Rainbow trout and Bream along with a trout stream with natural brown trout. You can completely relax and rejuvenate here. The cabin is very clean, fresh and updated. It has a large fully equipped eat in kitchen, both bedrooms have quality, comfortable queen sized beds with memory foam for a restful nights sleep. The back covered deck is a great place to hang out, relax, read a book, or try your fishing skills for native brown trout. The huge patio overlooks crystal clear Tucker Creek, (10 feet wide and 1-4 feet deep) and features a gas BBQ grill, with patio table & chairs. Tucker Creek is a cold water creek that is full of quartz crystal rocks. The cabin borders thousands of acres of the PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST with Trailheads and Forestry roads all around. The wildlife abounds. You may see turkey, deer, bear, Canadian geese, ducks, blue heron, Bald Eagles and more.

On Maggie's Farm we raise a small flock of sheep and have a pond stocked with Rainbow Trout. There are a large variety of fruit trees including Apple, Pear, and Peach. We also grow blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, walnut, asparagus, potatoes and many other vegetables and herbs. Across the street from Maggie's is a beautiful field of cows with the mountains as a background and a donkey named Smokey who loves to to be fed carrots.

There are many beautiful nearby waterfalls. Maggie's is Located in Balsam Grove, Transylvania County, which is also known as the 'LAND OF WATERFALLS.' There are over 250 waterfalls to enjoy HIKING, BIKING, photographing, and picnicing. Maggie's is at an elevation of 3000 feet and only 10 miles to the scenic BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, a beautiful drive to take to the Biltmore, enjoy lunch or dinner at the Pisgah Inn with amazing views, or Cherokee where Harrah"s casino is located. Parkway Road (Hwy 215) is likened to the tail of the dragon for mountain bikers and motorcyclists. Go FLY Fishing or tubing on nearby Davidson or French Broad Rivers. Maggie's is an easy drive with all good paved roads, I-95 to I-26 out of Asheville and you're almost there. Let the calming sound of the creek put you to sleep at night. Beautiful mountain views all around. The night can be so dark that you can see the Milky Way while sitting by the fire pit. The Pisgah Astronomical Research Center (PARI), is just a few minutes by car, it was a NASA Tracking Station and now is a Research Center where you can visit and view the sky through their huge telescopes. They just opened a new restaurant there called Smileys and the food is good.

About Jaqueline Pray Hatch

We were tired of the corporate life we were living and the rat race of working to pay bills. So we decided to take a leap of faith and buy a cabin in the forest of NC on a cold water creek, just outside of Asheville near the Blue Ridge Parkway. We wanted a more peaceful meaningful life. Mark is originally from Southampton England and Jacquie from Boston Massachusetts. We met in Central Florida working in our busy careers. We decided that when we retired we would buy a farm in the mountains and grow our own food and live off the land. It has been the most peaceful rewarding 8 years of our lives. We have 3 friendly dogs, 2 German Shepherds and a Hound, 2 cats, and a small flock of sheep.

Jaqueline Pray Hatch purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Jaqueline Pray Hatch chose Balsam Grove

We spent over a year looking for the perfect property for us. It had to have several things: a creek, high elevation, pasture, forest land, a beautiful town was a must (Brevard), close to activities and near a city (Asheville). This property had all we were looking for and it was on the market for only 72 hours. Living here is like a slice of heaven. There is 5 1/2 acres on Maggie's Farm and we border thousands of acres of Pisgah Forest on 2 sides of the property. We built our home across the creek and in the very back corner of the property. In case of emergency we are just down the road a bit.

What makes this cabin unique

The back deck is so relaxing, watch and listen to the creek while enjoying a lazy afternoon. Just beyond the creek we border the Pisgah National Forest where there are thousands of acres of forest and trails. Transylvania county is "The Land of Waterfalls" with over 250 waterfalls. The property location is the perfect jumping off point for nearly everything you want to see or do in Western North Carolina and come home to a comfy cabin and bed. There is a stocked rainbow trout pond on property along with 1000+ feet of natural cold water stream with brown trout running through the farm directly behind the cabin. Maggie's Farm has blackberries, blueberries and raspberries for picking. We grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables which can be eaten while on your stay. You can actually have a full dinner all from food grown right here on the farm during the harvest season.

Wonderful place and wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

I couldn't imagine a more wonderful visit and stay than Maggie's Farm and the hosts, Mark and Jacquie. The cabin was everything I had wanted and more. Mark and Jacquie could not have been any more accommodating or hospitable. I just wish we could've stayed longer. I will stay there again though. The cabin is awesome, right down to the very detail. Jacquie and Mark have thought of anything that might be needed in the cabin and have supplied. We loved our stay there and were instantly relaxed and comfortable both with the cabin and Jacquie and Mark. The location and the view from the cabin is spectacular. Our 8 year old grandson had a blast splashing in the creek, building a fire in the fire pit and catching fish in the pond. And that was all done on the farm! We all enjoyed the magnificent waterfalls close by. This whole experience was remarkable. We will be going back. I would recommend this place to everyone. Thanks Mark and Jacquie for many great memories!

Off the grid - but not too far (has WIFI & Netflicks etc)

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the 2 bedroom Cabin on the site and it was VERY clean and inviting. We hiked to the many area waterfalls in the mornings and then hung out in the shady part of the creek in the afternoons. The creek is shallow enough to put your chairs right in the creek and hang out. It would be safe & fun for small kids as well, although cold, but that is as expected for a clean, clear mountain stream :). Great way to beat the summer heat. We also enjoyed relaxing on the back porch, while listening to the creek flow & watching the hummingbirds & lightning bugs. We also enjoyed the fire pit on cool evenings. The hosts are very accessible and friendly. We had everything we needed but they were very eager to accommodate us in case we lacked for anything. Since there is no way to fit it all in during one 3 day weekend, so we definitely plan to come back, to see the rest of the waterfalls, do the river rafting (or canoe trip) & plan a fly fishing excursion.

Magical blend of peacefulness and adventure

  • 5 of 5

A most magical blend of mountains, a mountain farm, peacefulness with creek and quiet valley, and playfulness with sheep and dogs...and can't say enough about the hosts...Jackie and Mark. Their knowledge of the area (local mining places, road directions and waterfalls in the area) made our 2 days there full and fun for us and our doggies!

Magical place! Peaceful and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed at The Cabin at Maggies Farm and could not have been more pleased our accomodations. Situated in the Pisgah National Forest, this gem of a place is central to all miraculous mountain adventures. The owners of the property are wonderful people that enjoy sharing their property and knowledge of the area. We took advantage of their shares and were not dissapointed to say the least. We did daily excursions and were amazed at how much we could do and still get back to settle in for a relaxing evening watching the hummingbirds buzzing in and out for their evening ration and listening to the creek until the fireflies gave us a show. The cabin is very clean and had everything we could possibly need. The beds were very comfortable. In the morning we were able to join in the farm life and were blessed to be able to snuggle with the lambs as they were fed. We enjoyed so many waterfall hikes and yet there are many more to explore. I simply fell in love with the farm, hosts and area. Its no wonder I was scouting the realty before we left. Trouble is.. Mark and Jacquie found the best spot! We will return to Maggie's to soak up more of the amazing environment and the gracious hospitality. Grateful we found this place 🌻🐑

Long weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

Just wanted to write a review on our wonderful stay here at Maggie's Farm. My wife and I booked the cabin here perfect time for Memorial Day weekend. We didn't get in till late Friday night around 10pm. The directions were spot on. It was raining and been a long day driving from Central Florida. Next day we went to Brevard a town we fell in love with last October. The White Squirrel Festival was on and the weather was great. We got to meet Mark & Jacquie in person at the event while they were selling jewelry that she makes. You guys have a great place and you both are so personable. We had things in common being that they also lived in Central Florida and had been coming up here for years before they made the big move. We really enjoyed talking to you both. The farm is a great little hideaway very quiet and peaceful. We got to pet the sheep and lambs that morning and love seeing the little fish pond. The creek behind the house was just so relaxing listening to. The house is comfortable and even though we only stayed two nights and would have loved to stayed longer and cook a few meals there we really enjoyed it. The morning we were leaving I had great conversation with Mark and seeing their dogs(especially being a dog lover myself). I always think it's great being in beautiful locations but meeting awesome people are always a bonus. Definitely would like to come back. Thanks so much Mark & Jacquie

Peaceful environment and delightful hosts

  • 5 of 5

The moment I stepped onto the back porch and heard the sounds of the farm, most notably cascading water, bleating sheep and occasionally the braying of Smoky across the street, I felt myself exhale and by body relax, releasing tension and stress and settling into a calm, restful state. It's a beautiful place. Mark and Jacquie are colorful characters - warm, wonderful and fun!

There are a couple things that might be helpful to prepare for when visiting Maggie's Farm. First, while the driveway to the main house is graveled, parking for the cabin is in the grass. In wet conditions (which was very much the case during our stay), the ground can be very soft and muddy. We were concerned about being able to get in and out, but we backed in and it didn't turn out to be as difficult as we thought. Second, the three (wonderful) dogs bound around the farm (rightfully) when they are out helping with chores. For many fur families, this will not be an issue. Our PJ isn't as responsive to commands as we'd like her to be, so she was on leash whenever we were out of the cabin. Our first encounter was a little tricky, but Mark was very accommodating once he understood that three unleashed large dogs to one leashed medium dog was a somewhat overwhelming ratio for us. In fact, we were able to make special arrangements for PJ and Violet to run and play freely together in a great fenced pasture!

My family will definitely return. Part of me wishes we could take up residence there. In fact, we did extend our stay for an extra night because it was just too hard to leave. If what you need is time and space to relax, recover and just be - I can't imagine a better place the Maggie's farm!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for staying with us at Maggie's Farm. We are very happy you and your family enjoyed our little piece of heaven even though the remnants of tropical storm Alberto created a lot of rain you didn't let that prevent you from enjoying your stay. It was nice that PJ and Violet got along famously playing in the pasture together. Come see us during harvest and enjoy the abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and berries during summer and fall. Kindest regards, Mark, Jacquie and all the critters on Maggie's Farm.
