Very clean! Great location!
They have everything you will need for your stay. Plenty of parking. Overall it's a great place!
Comfortable place to relax, cook and work in between exploring the area.
The Prickly Pear has everything you need in a trip to the Fort Davis area. The house is spacious for a family or group of friends. Fort Davis is a beautiful and relaxing place to visit. It’s just 20 to 30 minutes to other areas like Marfa and Alpine and just a few hours to Big Bend Ranch State Park. We had an amazing time!
It made my vacation possible because it was so affordable
I don't need much when I travel because I spend most of my time outside, so this place worked out well for me. It was spotless when I arrived and it was clear that they had thought of just about everything. The pictures reflect the property perfectly.
The only negative were the beds. Those mattresses are way too old to still be in use and the plastic covering underneath very old and thin linens will leave you sweating all night. One twin mattress didn't have the plastic on it, so I tried it out. It was still incredibly uncomfortable. So much so that I drove to Alpine the next day and bought one of those egg crate mattress toppers, some sheets and a couple of pillows. It definitely helped.
If the mattresses aren't able to be replaced at this time, I'd suggest traveling with some comfortable bedding for your stay. I personally wouldn't mind paying a higher rate for new mattresses.
Other than that, it's quiet, clean, nobody bothers you, and it's close to so many things around. If you're with a group or family, there's plenty of board and card games and a pretty sweet movie collection.
Clean, roomy mobile home near heart of Fort Davis.
The Prickly Pear was a comfortable and reasonably priced lodging alternative in Ft Davis. Pros include the immaculate interior, plenty of room including 4 bedrooms, comfortable living area (well equipped with movies and toys if you have small children), affordability, plenty of hot water with good water pressure, and a full kitchen. The property is however located in a charmless neighborhood with dirt streets and the yard (like those of the neighbors) is not even minimally landscaped or with any pleasant touches. The rental experience could be really improved with better linens and towels, nicer mattresses, and a little effort towards a patio or outdoor sitting area. All that said, it is true to its listing, is not expensive, and did not disappoint us.
Close to State Park and lots of space
Clean house, lots of space, well equipped kitchen, plenty of towels, location close to State Park, easy to find, easy entry...all these things are good. Price per night is very reasonable, but all the fees, insurance, etc. tripled the cost for our 3 day stay! Living room furniture is old and not very comfortable, but serviceable. Beds are firm, but covered in hard plastic, and some of the fitted sheets did not stay in place. Entry steps at both the front and rear need replacing. Good plumbing except the 2nd bath toilet continued to run if you didn't wiggle the flush handle again. Dirt road and dry desert yard.
Relaxing and Enjoyable
The house served us well. We had plenty of room. Being on the handicapped side, it was difficult to climb the stairs outside and there was very little room to sit on the porch to enjoy the outside weather. Using my wheel walker was a bit inconvenient as the doors were a bit narrow, but only one was not passable. The king bed that I was on had a very old spring mattress on it and it was not the best to sleep on. But all-in-all, we did enjoy ourselves and would consider a stay at the Prickly Pear again. It would be very nice and more enjoyable with at least a larger deck out front with a canopy to protect from the sun. It was too bad that the rear deck was not able to be used. We loved the weather, as we have in the past. Also, Mrs. Valdez was so very helpful each time that I spoke with her on the phone. I thank her for that.
Some of my comments are not meant to be derogatory, only suggestions that we felt might be taken into consideration. With a few improvements, the Prickly Pear would be a top notch vacation home.
Also, the woodpeckers were busy pecking holes in the outside siding.
Thank you all!
Have a Great Day.
Thank you so very much for your review of our home. We have engaged a contractor to install a ramp entrance to the front of the home for those guests for whom the stairs are a challenge. Though we will continue to advertise our home as not wheelchair accessible since the roads remain dirt and there are no sidewalks. Also, we have touched base with our local nature center regarding our resident woodpeckers. Based on their response, we believe they are covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. This statute makes it unlawful to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill or sell birds listed therein, however, we will do some more research to see how we may be able to discourage their visits. We appreciate your honest feedback, as it makes us better hosts.
