Fantastic location

  • 4 of 5

Otter Creek is the ideal location to stay if you are interested in hiking, exploring and enjoying the beauty of Mt. Desert Island. This charming cottage is right next to Blackwoods Campground, which helps with logistics! We took many hikes and explored Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor, which offer places to eat that surpass Bar Harbor in every way! Do not miss going to Little Notch Bakery (pizza and sandwiches too) for the best multi-grain bread (can also get it at Hannaford's in Bar Harbor) and Beals for lobster on the harbor. If you can get in, eat on the porch at the Asticou (you can bring your dog) and enjoy the popovers that used to be served at Jordan Pond House before change of concessioner. The drive in to Bar Harbor is easy...go at low tide in the a.m., eat blueberry pancakes at Jordan's (or take out and picnic at the bottom of Bridge street) and walk across to Bar Island. Other hint...even on Sunday you can get your park pass at the Visitor's Center in the middle of Bar Harbor. If you are over 62, get your lifetime National Park Pass for $10 before the price goes up to $80!

The cottage is well-equipped, with a tank Brita in the fridge (we had brought our own pitcher). We had unusually hot weather in June and there was great ventilation everywhere except the living room, as there is no screen on that door. The large dining room had lots of windows and a door and the kitchen door provided great cross ventilation. Fans worked well upstairs to cool things down! The wifi and lovely big flat screen TV were great (big golf tournament for my husband). We had our Westie along and it was great for her; there is a gate to keep an obedient dog on the porch and a big yard to explore. We received a warm welcome and flowers later in our stay. The big issue for us was the shower...the curtain crowded the tub and the pressure was minimal...we learned how to adjust the curtain and a shorter curtain would help. We had a wonderful time nonetheless on our 3rd visit to Acadia over 40 years!

COZY AND CONVENIENT!

  • 4 of 5

EVERY AMENITY YOU COULD WANT EXCEPT A DOWNSTAIRS BATHROOM. FOR AGING SENIORS WITH BAD KNEES THIS WAS A PROBLEM. THE COTTAGE IS RIGHT NEXT TO HWY 3. CAR NOISE SLIGHTLY DISRUPTED OUR TRANQUILTIY, BUT THE DELIGHTFUL PORCH AND FIRE PIT WERE A DELIGHT. LOCATION WAS PERFECT FOR ACADIA PARK , BAR HARBOR , AND THE OTHER HARBORS ON MOUNT DESERT. DON'T MISS ASTICOU BOTANICAL GARDEN AND INN. WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND AND RETURN

Cozy, Convenient Perfect for our family of 4

  • 5 of 5

Each year we select a different destination on our bucket list. This year it was Acadia. We have been using VRBO to rent homes at our various destination for at least 15 years now. This year was no different. We diligently looked at each property, compared amenities, price, distance to Acadia and finally decided on Blackwood's Cottage and we were so happy with our selection! The home is cozy, warm and comfortable. It's eclectic decorations and refurbished antiques give it just the right charm. Our family loved happy hour on the large deck and nightly smore's around the bonfire. Otter Creek is a charming little village and is just 3 minutes to one of the entrances to Acadia and less than 10 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor. We honestly loved not being in the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. We went in to town to shop, people watch or enjoy a meal at a restaurant but were so happy to come home to the quiet side to enjoy our relaxing evenings. This home sits right on Rt. 3 which to us was perfect. We could walk right down the road to do the South trail hike to the top of Cadillac mountain and jump right on the road in our car if we wanted to explore the various small harbor towns that make up Mount Desert Island. This home was clean, comfortable and loaded with extras like linens, towels, paper products and detergents that made our stay that much nicer. Thank you Peggy for sharing your home with us.

Classic New England Charmer!! Perfect location!!

  • 5 of 5

For most of us, a trip to Maine is about discovering that little slice of “Americana”. We are looking for cool breezy evenings by the campfire, majestic mountain peaks, breathtaking sunrises, and picturesque harbors full of lobster boats. You’ll find all of this in the Acadia National Park area. There are literally thousands of options for accommodations so let me make this easy for you – Blackwoods Cottage.

Staying directly in Bar Harbor can be a bit “noisy” – cruise ships and tour buses tend to arrive periodically throughout the day. Located about 5 miles South of Bar Harbor, Blackwoods Cottage is in the village of Ottercreek. Ottercreek is tiny, but has it’s own little market, a gourmet restaurant, and it is nice and quiet. Also, the entrance to Cadillac Mountain hiking trail is within walking distance, two access points to Acadia National park are a quick drive, and there is a bus stop steps away from the cottage.

When we were planning our trip, I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for, but I had an image in my head of a charming rustic cabin that would be warm and cozy – classic New England. When I came across Blackwoods Cottage online I immediately fell in love. There was just something about it that made it special and the photos certainly do it justice in this case.

The front porch is almost as big and wide as the house and it was probably my favorite spot. Cheerful, clean and bright, I could certainly see spending hours enjoying a good book, a bottle of wine or conversation with friends. There is also a grill on the porch where we enjoyed grilling a steak and sharing a bottle of wine. The bonfire in the backyard was fantastic!

The interior was so charming, warm and for lack of a better way to put it – kinda felt like a big hug. The kitchen was adorable with its vintage-style appliances and Peggy left us a basket full of coffee, muffins and guidebooks.

The bedrooms upstairs were very clean, comfortable and quiet. We slept like babies. When it comes to bathrooms, I have to admit that this is where a lot of rentals typically loose me. I’m a bit of a freak about bathrooms. Let me assure you that Blackwood’s was a non-issue - it was great.

Here is the best part of Blackwoods – Peggy! She provided us with really helpful website links, useful information that only a “local” would know, and great advice on things to do and places to eat. We followed almost all of her advice and had a fantastic trip! Can't wait to return!

Beautiful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cottage. We really enjoyed eating our meals on the porch and relaxing after hiking and biking. The cottage is out of the hustle and bustle of down town Bar Harbor and we specifically looked for this. Down town was a very short drive or bike ride away. The cottage is close to hiking trails and one of the park entrances. The fire pit was also great. The eclectic décor is awesome and really well done. The cottage is bright, sunny and very homey. We enjoyed the humming birds in the morning while drinking coffee on the porch! Peggy and Bill are great hosts and have done a remarkable job restoring this home. We would recommend this cottage to anyone.

Very cute cottage

  • 4 of 5

My family of 4 stayed at Blackwoods for a week. I agree with all of the prior reviews. The cottage was very clean and fairly spacious. The porch is a great place to hang out and relax and we used the fire pit every night. Peggy was very responsive and helpful without being intrusive. Just a couple things to keep in mind …the cottage is on a busy road so if you have small children, it could be cause for concern. We have 2 teenagers and found that there really wasn't much for them to do around the cottage so we ended up going in to Bar Harbor a lot. The Otter Creek market is close but very expensive and has limited items so you're really better off bringing as much food as you can from home. You also would want to bring bottled water since the water seemed like it might be well water. Overall, we had a great week and loved the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review. It's very gratifying to know that our guests recognize the extra effort we put into providing clean and well furnished cottages. Blackwood Cottage is one of our most popular cottages because of it's central location. It is very close to the Blackwoods Campground with many Ranger programs, the Acadia National Park Loop Road and the Otter Cliffs Shore Path and just across the road is the most popular trail to Cadillac Mountain. The Otter Creek Market is convenient to Blackwood Cottage and Hannaford Supermarket is located in Bar Harbor for all grocery needs. I'm very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Blackwood.
