Kate's Cottage by the Sea: A Quiet Family Retreat in Santa Cruz--Walk to Beach!

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 6 nights

About the property

Family-Friendly House, 3 BR, 2 Baths, Fenced Yard. Walk to Pet-Friendly Beaches

Hidden away from the bustling Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Kate’s Cottage by the Sea offers a come-as-you-are getaway for everyone – from the young to the young-at-heart, and even your four-legged family members.

With room for 8, our cozy home is just a five-minute walk from picturesque local beaches at 23rd Avenue, 26th Avenue and Moran Lake, and features a spacious yard for you to spread out in. Leave with a great tan, a relaxed attitude and priceless memories of time with the ones you love.

An open design maximizes time together, so you can be part of the laughs even while whipping up meals. With a living room and a family room, half the family can snuggle up by the fireplace and chat while the other half hits the foosball table for a friendly competition or flips on their favorite TV show or movie.

And don’t forget about the yard: once the kids are tucked in dreaming of their next day on the beach, wind down by the firepit over a cocktail - or two. After all, this is your vacation, too.

Family fun is our specialty, and our large, fenced-in yard offers plenty of space to spend time together in. Challenge your loved ones to a game of croquet, or let the little ones run in the yard with Fido while you kick back in the bubbling hot tub.

Or grab a boogie board, beach chairs and wet suit and take a short stroll to favorite local beaches. On rainy days and evenings, our full stock of games and toys – including an art easel, building blocks, dollhouse and workbench – will keep the whole crew entertained.

Our kitchen is fully stocked and ready to handle your pickiest eater – just add groceries. We have you covered with all the basics, from spices and condiments to cookware and dishes to glasses for evening margaritas. Feed a crowd with our full suite of appliances, including a gas stove/oven, microwave, waffle iron, toaster and more, and keep cleanup simple with a dishwasher.

There’s room for up to 10 to gather around the dining room table while swapping stories and admiring the yard through a large picture window, and high chairs are available so even the tiniest guests can be part of meals together.

Or opt to eat outside on the covered patio, where you’ll find dining space for 8 and both a charcoal and gas BBQ – bring your own briquettes or use our provided propane.

Our three bedrooms plus the family room offer sleeping accommodations for 8, and every room can be configured to keep your little one close by.

The master boasts a California king bed in addition to a double bed that can be rolled into the living room for more privacy. The second and third bedrooms each have one queen bed and a baby crib - these cribs can easily be moved anywhere in the house. Two queen-size futons in the family room offer a chance to tuck in fireside for up to 4 adults, or all the slumber-partying little ones.

Did we mention the beaches? There are three of them within a five-minute stroll, and since we’re nestled away from the touristy part of town, you can expect a laid-back, local feel at each. Watch the tide come in from the top of the stairs at 26th Avenue or spark a driftwood bonfire at Moran Lake or 23rd Avenue. Great news for the pups: they’re welcome to splash in the surf at every one of these beaches.

After an afternoon of boogie boarding, recount your adventures at a sit-down family dinner at any number of mouthwatering eateries in Capitola - less than 10 minutes away by car, or a scenic 30-minute bike ride away. Try Zelda’s for seafood and live music on the beach, or Paradise Beach Grill to enjoy American fare on a bayside patio.

And if it’s a classic beach trip you’re after, don’t miss the chance to win a prize or zip around on the rollercoasters at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk – just a 12-minute drive away. You may just catch a chowder cook-off or band review while you’re there!

Kate's Cottage by the Sea is a County of Santa Cruz registered vacation rental holding TOT Certificate # CO00126. Please note that County ordinance limits the number of people aged 12 and up allowed in all vacation rental homes. Unfortunately, this website's software isn't structured for this requirement, so please describe your group when inquiring and we'll let you know if we can accommodate you.

How far is Kate’s Cottage by the Sea from the beach?

The closest beach is about a five minute walk away. Two other beaches are about an additional five minute walk away.

How far to the Boardwalk?

To start with, nothing in Santa Cruz County is very far away! The Boardwalk is about a three-mile drive away. Ambitious walkers have walked it, but most people prefer to drive. If you decide to walk, you can shorten the walk by about a half mile by using a footpath/bridge. You’ll be close enough to get there easily and quickly on the day(s) you want to spend there, but won’t be smelling corndogs all day the rest of the time!

How many people does the house sleep?

It depends! First, the County limits us to 8 people aged 12 and up, so if your group is only adults or if all the kids in your group are aged 12 and up, 8 is the limit. For groups with smaller children, we can accommodate more than that—especially where the adults are couples. The best suggestion is to describe the group when you inquire about a stay and let us help you determine whether you’ll be a good fit for the house. Frankly, sometimes the house can seem a bit crowded with 8 single adults because every couch and futon would need to be used for sleeping, leaving little room to sit and watch TV, etc.

Can I bring my dog?

It depends! Is your dog housebroken, current on vaccinations and flea / tick protection? What are your dog’s sleeping habits? Will your dog stay off the furniture? Will you clean up all pet waste from the yards? What breed is your dog? The best thing to do is to describe your dog when you inquire. A non-refundable pet fee is charged for each dog.

About Kathie Gutierrez

After living in Santa Cruz County for 30 years, I moved to San Jose temporarily to be closer to work. Eventually, I decided to move back to the Santa Cruz area and spent a year searching for a midcentury modern house on an acre in the woods.

One day, exhausted from the search, I took a break and decided to visit my favorite beach. On the way there, I saw an open house sign and took a short detour.

The house wasn't on an acre. It wasn't in the woods. And it wasn't midcentury modern. But there was just something about it I couldn't ignore: it was within a 5-minute walk of my long-time favorite beach.

Although my original plan was to move in immediately, I wasn't quite ready to leave San Jose. With its spacious yard, cozy layout and location blocks from the beach, I knew my home would make the perfect getaway for families visiting Santa Cruz. So I started hosting vacation rental guests, and, well, the rest is history!

I still love spending time in Santa Cruz, and do so as often as I can. After all, I have a lot of favorite places in the area (which I'm happy to share with you), and it's also fun to make some new finds as the area grows and changes. I hope you'll share your favorite discoveries with me - I love to hear from my guests!

Why Kathie Gutierrez chose Santa Cruz

It's such an easy walk from some of my favorite beaches in Santa Cruz County. It's on a quiet street, with neighbors who are full-time residents. It has a nice back yard, with room for the whole family to play croquet, enjoy a bar-be-que, and just relax.

It has "good family vibes" and is a place where all generations are comfortable.

What makes this house unique

When you stay, you'll be out of the most touristy part of town, about halfway between the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor and the quaint town of Capitola, yet still just 4 miles (a few minutes by car) to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Municipal Wharf. Once nice thing about Santa Cruz is that it's small enough that nothing takes long to get to!

During the summer months, priority will be given to bookings of seven nights or more.

GREAT location! The house itself needs a few tweaks very simple ones.

  • 4 of 5

Could not have been any better location for not being right on the water. Family neighborhood, great for kids. Ours enjoyed the backyard & hot tub lots of things available for them a nice family time. The only suggestion would be for better pillows or change them often. The futons were not comfortable to sit on and watch TV so we didn’t do that. Spent our time outside or in the living room. We had a lovely time would do it again. The kids didn’t want to leave. Thank you Kathie

A quiet, clean, and spacious retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with 4 people (and a dog) last weekend, and used all 3 main bedrooms. This home is stocked with tons of activities for kids, families, and has plenty of room to spread out and enjoy both inside and outside. One of those spots that you wish you had more time in!

Host Kathie was very responsive, and was able to host us on short notice, with a pet, and with a last-minute addition to the schedule. The house and backyard were well maintained with lots of help in making it feel like home quickly.

A 15 minute walk to the main intersection of Pleasure Point, and a 3 minute walk to stairs leading down to the beach, this was in a great location, but in a neighborhood that was off the beaten path and so very quiet and peaceful.

We look forward to coming back and staying longer!

Lovely home, terrific host and wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

Large bedrooms with comfy beds and ample closets, an open floor plan that allowed our 3 adult-couples group the fun of sharing in preparing meals in the well equipped kitchen, a terrific veranda and private backyard perfect for a game of Bocce, and a very quick walk to a great beach! And Kathie, the owner, could not have been more responsive! What more can one ask for?!

Fabulous for families - has everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here. The location is wonderful - two blocks from the beach and a short drive from shops (including a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods) and the boardwalk and other activities. The house isn't fancy but is very comfortable, spacious, and well-stocked with everything a group could want, from extra cribs to condiments to scuba gear to a backyard perfect for relaxing and entertaining. Kathie, the owner, is very responsive, though we didn't have any problems she needed to troubleshoot. We would definitely love to return!
