About Neil Youngson
I left England in 2007 with a round-the-world ticket and set off in search of a better quality of life. In 2008 I arrived in Mexico knowing nothing about the country, but within a few months I knew it was where I wanted to be. A year later I decided to check out Merida and straight away knew it was the place for me - three weeks later I had bought a house! 'When the dust of Mexico has settled on your heart, you will find peace in no other land.' Stan Delaplane
Neil Youngson purchased this House in 2009
Why Neil Youngson chose Centro
I looked at 25 properties in Merida before viewing Casa 503, but when I walked into this partially renovated house I was instantly struck by the feeling of calm and tranquility - the house definitely had good vibes! It took about 8 months of renovation to remodel it into what it is now but it never lost that feeling. It's in a nice neighbourhood, close to a park and supermarket and just far enough away from the noise and bustle of the centre of town, yet close enough to walk to the main plaza.
What makes this House unique
The house has great airflow front to back. The small front garden with bougainvillea makes it possible to open the doors and windows at the front and let the winds from the east blow through the house keeping it cool. The big yard at the back is completely private allowing uninhibited use of the wonderful lap pool, day or night. I am working slowly but surely to create a wonderful tropical space in the garden around the pool. Unfortunately with the house being rented most of the year I don't get to spend too much time tending to the garden! Some of my green-fingered guests have asked permission to do a bit of gardening during their stay and I am always happy to for this to happen, but it is not required!

Colorful, magical, cozy casa in a lovely neighborhood
We just left after a month in Neil’s casa. From the minute we arrived it felt like home. The house is comfortable with lots of room to spread out and relax. The kitchen has every thing you could possibly need for cooking. We cooked in all but four nights the entire month. The corner grocery is convenient to the house. We did stock up at Costco when we first arrived. The patio area is large with comfortable lounging chairs as well as a covered area. The pool is wonderful...especially for someone who loves to swims laps. The beds and linens were perfect. Neil is a gracious host and we enjoyed hearing about Merida and his renovations of the home. We will be returning next year for another month and feel fortunate to have this time to look forward to.
Thank you, Neil!!!
Thanks Lane, it was a pleasure to host you and Linda. I have just installed hammock hooks in the covered BBQ area and purchased another hammock so you now have 2 to choose from. I look forward to your return visit next year.
We love this place😍
Clean, well equipped and a superb host/owner. This property is so well thought out, it’s easy to tell that is was renovated not as a rental house but as a home. A toothbrush is all you will need. The beds are comfortable, bathrooms user friendly and the kitchen superbly equipped. Entertainment options varied and internet availability excellent. The pool and patio area where we spent most of our time is wonderful. Clothing is optional, if that’s your choice you’ll feel and be safe.
Neil is easy to communicate with and as a long time resident of Merida is very well versed in the ins and outs of making the most of your visit to this wonderful part of Mexico.
Our Little Oasis in the Yucatan!
We finally had the opportunity to visit Merida this winter. It was an exciting yet stress free vibrant city. Neil's place afforded us the opportunity to live in a quiet residential area yet within minutes of the excitement. Merida is a large city but yet laid back. We never felt the need to rent a car because we had buses and taxis within a short walk. We visited a Flamingo Reserve, Lots of Ruins, Cenotes (underground springs) and Progresso Beach all unique in their own way.
Lots and lots of restaurants to choose from. There's a main Big Plaza about a 30 minute walk or a 5 minute cab fare. That's where everything is happening. But there are also lots of smaller plazas where something is always happening at least once a week. The nearest Plaza to us was Santiago. Nice market, a lot of small restaurants, a Cinema and there's dancing every Tue. night. The Yucatan Today has a calendar of events which details all the goings on! It's also a very helpful magazine and it's free. If you don't have access to one, you can google it on line.
It was great coming back to Neil's house to his wonderful lap pool. We even befriended an Iguana. We named him Pepe. He was a delight. The house is spacious and was well equipped with everything. Neil was most gracious and a true professional. All we had to do was call him or email and he took care of all our needs and concerns. We've rented dozens of homes and by far he was one of the best. Really appreciated having him near.
This was our first time in Mexico and hope it will not be our last. A lasting memory for sure. Thanks again Neil for making this getaway so special and one we will remember forever.
Thank you Elvin & Maria, so glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa 503, and hope to see you back in Merida sometime.
Wonderful place, very comfortable and the pool is fantastic
Very comfortable; House was cool even in numerous 95 degree days; never needed a/c. All necessities in house, large supermarket literally 4 minutes walk away. Neil took the time to show us everything and how everything worked; he was also gracious enough to extend the time of departure for our last day when our next location wasn’t immediately available. Great communication both before and after our arrival; would love to stay here again!
Thanks Jim, it was a pleasure having you and your wife stay here, hope to see you again sometime.
Great place to stay in Merida. Good amenities and a welcome retreat to relax at the end of the day.
Great for exploring the wonders of the Mayan world!
This is our second stay at this property. We enjoyed the huge pool, the great covered seating area in the beautiful courtyard, the spacious inside rooms, the kitchen equipped with everything you need, comfortable beds, laundry facility and the best manager ever. Neil makes your stay effortless with information about everything in the house and around Merida. Aside from the grocery at the end of the block there is a really nice Chedraui just a few blocks down the highway. Cabs and busses are everywhere and the Centro is quite an easy walk. We have stayed other places that cost a bit more but this place is the BEST! Thank you Neil!
Merida is the cultural centre of the Yucatan with many museums, art galleries, concert halls, and free live music in the city's parks. The city is full of beautiful old colonial architecture and many churches including the oldest cathedral in the Americas. There are many fine restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets - eat fresh seafood tacos with the locals or dine in fine establishments that wouldn't be out of place in London or New York. If shopping is your thing there are modern air-conditioned malls or you can explore the antique and craft shops around centro or get lost in the maze that is San Benito Market. For exercise, head up calle 60 to Estadio Salvador Alvarado where early in the mornings you'll find hundreds of locals and ex-pats running, working out, joining in aerobics classes, playing tennis, squash, racket-ball, basketball, or just walking in the early morning sunshine.
The countryside surrounding Merida is full of interesting places to visit. Head north to the coast at Progreso for some sun, sand and seafood, visit the flamingo colonies at Celestun, swim in the warm fresh underground waters of a cenote, visit a hacienda and explore the history that once made Merida one of the richest cities in the world, or explore the ruins of ancient Mayan cities at places such as Uxmal, Mayapan or Chichen-Itza. Your property manager can arrange an English-speaking tour guide and transport to make any of these trips, and can also facilitate car hire.
