Casa 503 is a fully renovated house located within the popular barrio (neighbourhood) of Santiago in Merida's Centro district. It sits on a quiet bus-free street just one block from the beautiful Parque del Centenario which houses Merida's zoo (free-to-enter). Within 2 minutes walk is a large supermarket and pharmacy for your local shopping needs.
The spacious house has two air-conditioned bedrooms with on-suite bathrooms, a living room with new (for 2016) very comfortable rattan furniture and a large TV with HD cable, a fully-equipped kitchen designed for those who love to cook, a second living/dining room with dining table and large comfortable L-shaped sofa - this room opens onto the spacious and completely private yard where you will find ample space for relaxing, entertaining or having a BBQ, and a 40ft filtered lap pool that gets lots of sun and is useable throughout the year. New for April 2016 is a covered outdoor seating area with built-in BBQ grill and French tiled roof (photos coming soon).
The house has traditional pasta tile floors, thick mamposteria walls, and remains cool with good air-flow from front to back and has fans in every room. High-speed wireless internet is provided, as well as laundry facilities and hot water throughout the house. All windows and doors are equipped with insect screens.
Merida is safe and pedestrian-friendly with many small parks and squares and is easy to explore on foot. From the house a 10 minute stroll past the grand colonial buildings on Calle 59 brings you to Parque de Santiago with its beautiful church, market, Art Deco cinema, and on Tuesday evenings live music and dancing in the square. Continue down Calle 59 and you'll soon be standing in Merida's main plaza gazing up at the oldest cathedral in the Americas, surrounded by street vendors and market stalls.
I left England in 2007 with a round-the-world ticket and set off in search of a better quality of life. In 2008 I arrived in Mexico knowing nothing about the country, but within a few months I knew it was where I wanted to be. A year later I decided to check out Merida and straight away knew it was the place for me - three weeks later I had bought a house!

Neil Youngson purchased this house in 2009
I looked at 25 properties in Merida before viewing Casa 503, but when I walked into this partially renovated house I was instantly struck by the feeling of calm and tranquility - the house definitely had good vibes! It took about 8 months of renovation to remodel it into what it is now but it never lost that feeling.
It's in a nice neighbourhood, close to a park and supermarket and just far enough away from the noise and bustle of the centre of town, yet close enough to walk to the main plaza.
The house has great airflow front to back. The small front garden with bougainvillea makes it possible to open the doors and windows at the front and let the winds from the east blow through the house keeping it cool. The big yard at the back is completely private allowing uninhibited use of the wonderful lap pool, day or night.
I am working slowly but surely to create a wonderful tropical space in the garden around the pool. Unfortunately with the house being rented most of the year I don't get to spend too much time tending to the garden. Some of my green-fingered guests have asked permission to do a bit of gardening during their stay and I am always happy to for this to happen.
My wife and I stayed in Casa 503 for the entire month of June 2011. My wife is Mexican-native and has spent her 20’s in Merida, so we were quite familiar with the city and neighbourhoods.
Casa 503 has recently been remodelled in a lovely way, where you’ll encounter both western standards and authentic Mexican style of living / architecture.
We actually took a look at various houses in advance to our booking – without a doubt Casa 503 is the best deal you can get regarding size/quality/location in this price category. My wife and I had a wonderful time in Casa 503 and can only highly recommend it to every tourist who’s interested in an authentic lodging and a recovering vacation. Neil cares a lot about the house and all concerns his guests might face, though he leaves you in peace if you don’t need his help.
We spent a month in this wonderful house in Merida. Neil is incredibly helpful and an excellent host, he replied very quickly to any questions I emailed him.
The house is clean, and had everything we needed. The garden area is lovely and private, with a long narrow pool which is perfect for children (and adults!).
There is a supermarket one block away, so food shopping is simple and easy. One block further is the zoo which has a lot of fairground rides my children enjoyed. It was easy and cheap to get a taxi into the centre of Merida.
If you don't like city activity combined with warmth and sunshine, maybe Merida is not your place.... But if you enjoy the sights and sounds a different culture can bring you, and you like sunshine, you may find it here. I have been neglectful on writing a review because I really don't want too many people finding out about this special spot. Every year, we escape somewhere to discover a new place. This last winter, our escape for warmth was to Merida. We fell in love with the photos of the colorful house and lap pool, and it didn't take much convincing for Tim and I to choose Neil's home for our getaway. Neil, the owner, resides a few blocks away, is very much a conscientious homeowner, and the house has everything we needed or could want. If you are a cook, you will be happy with how well the kitchen is equipped. If you are a swimmer, you will LOVE the pool.... We certainly did! The pool garden area is superb and very private. We are homebodies, and it suited us perfectly. We are also walkers, and loved that we could walk everywhere. There is a nice supermarket just down a few short blocks.... It is about a 20 minute walk to Centro. People are very kind here in Merida, and we really enjoyed Neil. He's the "pool man" on Wednesdays and was kind enough to let us share in tending the garden, and showing me how to help with the pool, which, to me, was a lot of fun! We found lots of good places to go, and lots of general information in a notebook that Neil provides for guests. Our day trip to Mayapán and swim in a cenoté, followed by lunch at a hacienda was a perfect day! Thanks Neil... for sharing your time and space with us. See you again SOON!!!

We had met Neil previously and looked forward to getting into a different neighbourhood in a house that had the amenities we need.
The two bedrooms with their own bathrooms is a great feature for privacy. The kitchen/ dining area provided all utensils we would stock ourselves for in house dining plus a charcoal barbecue. The rear garden, pool area is a quiet sanctuary for relaxing time after cooling off in the lap pool. Many rentals have a "splash" pool but if you're serious about some room and exercise this pool will not disappoint.
Neil is a reliable, hands on owner and a knowledgeable source of info for Merida and area. As others mentioned, groceries, transport, parks and even a gym are nearby with Centro in walkable proximity.
We really enjoyed staying at this house. We were with 3 persons and because of the different rooms (living, kitchen, dining room area, 2 bedrooms and of course the outside area) it was easy to retreat in one of the nooks to have some private time. The house was decorated in a homey way and we immediately felt at home. The swimming pool was awesome, we swam many laps or floated in our air chairs which we brought ourselves (it would be nice if they were provided). September was very hot and sometimes we left the a/c in the bedrooms on with the doors to the other rooms open, to create a little bit more coolness in the living and dining room. The a/c was not really cold so at night time a sheet was more than enough. The kitchen has everything you need and we prepared a lot of meals.
The supermarket around the corner has all the basics and if you need some more specialties there is a bigger supermarket about 20 minutes by foot. We didn't have a car and like to walk to shops, bars and restaurants but that was sometimes a little bit too far (nearest places about 15 minutes) especially because it was so hot outside. The bus stop was nearby and also a taxi was easy to get, but I missed a little bit of 'action' more closer to the house. Although it was nice that the neighborhood was residential and quiet.
Neil was quick in his responses to our questions and I appreciated the folder with information in the house (got a real nice haircut at one of the hairdressers he recommended).
Casa 503 = great pool , great location , great owner ( who answered all my questions about living in Merida),
Merida is a really nice city with everything you need at a reasonable cost , getting around is easy with collectivos at 7 pesos ,and taxis from the casa to the centro is about 40 pesos .Renting a car to visit the coast fishing villages was really interesting and we saw lots of flamingos on the way, ask Neil for the car rental agency .
Mexican league baseball playoffs ,was for me, something I did not want to miss.
The cheers of the fans supporting their team and everything else in the stadium ( food ,music , souvenirs...) at 150 pesos per tickets ... an unforgettable evening.
Thanks again Neil, we recommend casa 503 to everybody who wants to visit a nice and safe place in Mexico and feel like home .
Also see our earlier review, as this is our third visit. We pack lightly for two weeks so appreciate the washer and long clothesline (instant-dry!) in the warm climate. Also loved the new loungers and patio chairs, very comfy. Neil had just bought two new sets of bedding, new set of knives and few replacement items for kitchen, new laundry basket, and said there were a few more things on the way. There is now a basic house cell phone that guests can use on a pay-as-you-go basis, refill at OXXO, very helpful. This is how a vacation rental should be run, and why we returned a third time. Neil has always provided great travel tips as well, he told us of a route that wasn't shown on either of our detailed maps and we had a great adventure!
