Perfect get-away cottage
The sunsets were amazing, and the location was perfect. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had. We also loved having the boat for the week! Thanks for everything!
We had a family group of 8 adults & 2 children, with other family visiting during the week. We had a wonderful week. The breeze off the lake for the first 3 days was fantastic. There is a tire swing that the kids fell in love with. The yard is huge and shaded for the better part of the day and certainly large enough for volleyball or badminton. We did set up the croquet on the lawn and we set up our horseshoes on the beach. On the 4th of July the fireworks around the lake were so cool, almost all the way around. The camp itself is clean & bright & we certainly filled it up. The washer/dryer and the a/c's were a god send at the end of the week. Brian & Meg, it was very nice to meet you, and Jameson (LOL). Thank You so much!!
GREAT LOCATION ON THE LAKE. CLOSE ENOUGH TO RUN TO SYLVAN BEACH OR GRAB MORNING COFFEE, BUT QUIET AND PRIVATE. COTTAGE WAS CLEAN AND WELL STOCKED. THE YARD IS HUGE AND WELL KEPT. BIG PLUS...SOME OF THE BEST FISHING SPOTS ON THE LAKE ARE WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF THE DOCK. LOCATION CANT BE BEAT.
Property was exactly as advertised.
First thing we noticed upon arrival was, the cottage was spotless!
The yard was perfectly manicured, private and HUGE! Old growth trees provided shade when necessary.
The amenities were all in good working order and all of the houseware items were provided.
The owner was available, professional and ready to offer assistance/advise whenever I called him.
We are already planning on returning next year.
Thank you for the review! You were a pleasure to host! We would love to host you again!
nice family vacation
Overall, it was a great family vacation. Not fancy by any means but nice. The dock was a huge disappointment as we booked this place for the ease of a dock. The water is so shallow it’s scary to try to bring the boat in. You definitely can’t use your motor, just the trolling motor. They said they had a lift but there was no boat lift when we arrived. The dock needs some updating to feel safe docking there. They did have a slip at a nearby dock but that didn’t help with ease of just jumping on the boat in front of the cottage for evening rides. They didn’t have the basic kitchen stuff so plan on bringing everything down to salt (the container was empty) which is expected. They did have silverware, cups and some pans. Owner was very nice. BRING BUG SPRAY!!! The large yard was nice for the kids to play and ride power wheels. Lawn was so long and not cut until two days before we left, same with the beach being raked. If you have kids you have to visit the wild Animal park down the road, it was beautiful and fun. The washer and dryer were so nice to have! I think a little TLC would go a long way here but again this is just a cottage. Again, overall a great vacation with the family and Brian, the owner, really was a nice guy.
If there is an issue or concern, we are close by and will address any area that is unsatisfactory. Our modest house/cottage, which it is advertised as such, did not meet this renters expectations. It is exactly like it is from the pictures on Homeaway.
As for the water depth (as per the description), I walked out in the water to show the depth was no shallower then 2 ft deep. He said "maybe I didn't trim all the way up." No lift is or was ever advertised. The weather the week of this stay was not perfect and is why we explained the reason why we provide a slip (with free launching) that is only one mile away so boats and the dock do not get damaged as Oneida Lake turns choppy when the wind picks up. This renter was upset about his inability to navigate to the dock in 2ft waves.
The dock is safe and is a Northern Lights brand aluminum dock. The previous weeks renters had tied up their 4 boats with no problem. The renter also had an issue backing his trailer and although there is over an acre of land, continually parked on neighboring lawns even after I politely requested he not do so. There has never been an issue with parking a trailer.
As for no salt, the reviewer correctly states we don't provide food. There are more pots and pans than needed along with a full set of dishes, glasses, and flatware. The renter never requested any additional pots or state that we did not provide what was in the description. We do provide a roll of paper towels, rolls of toilet paper and a small bottle of dish soap.
As for the beach not being raked, we clean, and rake the beach each Saturday and if more seaweed comes in, it can be raked and piled to the side. I maintain the beaches to the left and the right of our property which is about 250ft of shoreline.
As for the lawn, mowing is done weekly, weather permitting - I am not sure what "too long is" and is a subjective comment. I mow and do all the weed trimming for the property and the next door neighbor. The town will cite you for grass being to long.
We do not oversell the house/cottage. It is on a private road with woods behind the house between the woods and the water, there will be bugs. We spray for spiders and ants around the house so there are no spiderwebs on the house. I would suggest bringing bug spray as mosquitoes like woods and water.
This will be our 6th year staying here. The cottage is clean and family friendly. It has everything you need. The yard is great for outside games and I love the beach and water. Great fishing out front as well!
Oneida Lake is considered the 'thumb' of the finger lakes (because of its east to west orientation) and is 7 miles wide by 21 miles long. Great fishing (bass, walleye, pan fish), swimming, Sylvan Beach area (turn of the century amusement park), Turning Stone Casino, 3 Championship Golf Courses, International Boxing Hall of Fame, Revolutionary War sites (Fort Stanwix and the Battle of Oriskany site) and various Erie Canal Museums (Rome and Chittenango). The location of the cottage makes for easy day trips to locations and attractions such as the Thousand Islands, Alexandria
Bay, Boldt Castle and Singer Castle, the Antique Boat Museum in
Clayton, Old Forge, the Adirondack Museum, the Finger Lake wineries
and the various 'wine trails,' Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of
Fame, Sterling Renaissance Fair, Corning Museum of Glass, Oswego's Harbor Fest, Turning Stone Casino, the Madison Bouckville Antique Fest, the Great New York
State Fair, Carousel Mall, the Carrier Dome, as well as visits to, and parents' weekends at, Syracuse University, Utica College, Hamilton College, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Cortland, SUNY ESF, LeMoyne College, Morrisville State College, Onondaga, Community College, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Cazenovia College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University.A great lake to Kayak or boat on. There are many launches within a mile of the house. 10 minutes from Turning Stone Resort and Casino. Sylvan Beach is a 7 miles away and is a turn of the century amusement park right on the Erie Canal and Oneida Lake.
30 minutes from Syracuse and 30 minutes from Utica
Easy access to the NYS Thruway
