Bear Gamble Mountain Retreat

Overview

Property Details

Updated: Sep 1, 2016
House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, Sleeps 8

This 4 bedroom, 2 1/4 bath home is located at an approximate elevation of 8400 feet just between Ouray and Ridgway. Enjoy the spectacular view of Mt. Sneffels from the great room and master suite, then gaze down to the Ridgway Valley from the private master suite deck. The home is decorated with cabin and western theme furnishings, and features vaulted wood ceilings, wood floors, rustic slate floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. The master suite is on the upper level with a second bedroom/den on the main level and two additional bedrooms in the lower level. The great room is the perfect place to sip a cup of coffee while watching the clouds float over one of the most amazing mountain ranges in the country. Or, if you are feeling adventurous, slip outside and relax in the hot tub with fresh air views of the surrounding mountain peaks and valleys. Located in a gated community, on an incredibly scenic 4.5 mile climb out of Ouray, this home is the epitome of a mountain getaway. Whether you like fishing, skiing, playing in the snow, biking, 4-wheeling, soaking in the hot springs, hiking, or just relaxing, the Ouray area offers it all. Please be aware that most roads in Ouray County are NOT paved. Although the road to our home is maintained, it does climb to an elevation of 8400 feet on a winding view-packed road. Low clearance cars are not recommended.

We enjoyed our stay at Bear Gamble immensely.

Brandy was very accommodating and went out of her way to help with our stay at their beautiful home. It was clean and well-stocked, with unbelievable views. We even saw a shy bear!

Thanks Brandy!

Stunning Views!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time, the house is even better than the pictures showed. Lots of wildlife & hummingbirds, we even saw a bear during one of our drives to the cabin. We loved the hot tub. The views and quiet were amazing. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us!

Amazing Mountain Retreat

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking for some peace and quiet high in the Rockies and want to do it in comfort then you will not be disappointed with this rental. The home is well appointed with comfortable furniture, rustic but tasteful decoration, and is spacious enough for a family of 8. The home was designed with large south-facing windows to frame the awesome peaks of Mt Sneffels, a view which greets you from the master bedroom and from the large common area with open kitchen. The master suite is quite spacious with a sitting room and large bathroom with spa shower and large tub. The three other bedrooms are snug but very comfortable. Sitting on the front porch we were greeted by deer, chipmunk and humming birds. We even saw a small bear while on the gravel road to the cabin. This was our first experience in the San Juan range, which we found to be tremendously beautiful with a variety of hikes, 4x4 adventures, and shopping. Even after 9 busy days I feel like we missed out on several nearby sights / activities.

Factors that prevent me from giving 5 stars include lack of functional internet for the duration of our 10 night stay. The owner was not able to fix the satellite connection and there was no reliable 3G/LTE backup in such a remote location. Secondly, the house does not have air conditioning and became uncomfortably warm in late afternoon and early evening due to the many west-facing windows, most of which do not have blinds or curtains to block the sun. Lastly, the route from the nearest paved highway to the cabin is more of a trek than I expected - the home serves as a great mountain retreat but it isn't necessarily a convenient base-camp for mountain activities.

Just got back from trip to Colorado and had a wonderful stay thanks to this beautiful home on top of the mountain!! The view was out of this world!! Saw lots of wildlife on our travels back & forth from house to highway. Use to live out in the Ridgway-Ouray area and felt right at home. The property was was well -maintained and recommend a stay to everyone.

Hikers from Florida

  • 5 of 5

Bear Gamble Retreat was just beautiful. It was absolutely everything that we look for in a getaway vacation from the everyday hustle. The quietness, seclusion and the amenities were perfect. One of our drives down the scenic drive we saw three bears along the side of the road eating berries, the cows were a little bit of an annoyance. The location of the home in Ouray is set perfectly between Silverton & Telluride with so much to do, we hiked over 50 miles in 10 days and looked forward in coming back to the house to enjoy the hot tub to soothe those soar tired muscles. If we ever decide to come back to this area we will definitely stay here again.

Wildlife retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful and back in there. Had a great stay. Got to see lots of wildlife up close. First day was a large black bear. Every day a bear but the one that was totally awesome was the large black mountain cat that was at the deck entrance. Total of 4 large black bears and 2 smaller cubs. One grizzly bear, and big cat. On complaint was the free range cows that used the house area as a toliet. But the place was great, for quite time. Would recommend it to anyone. Views were awesome from decks. My dog loved it house pet friendly. Thumbs up.

The 'Switzerland of America', Ouray's natural landscape is majestic and amazing! Enjoy the beauty of a copper colored mountaintop at over 12,000 ft in elevation. Feel the cool spray from rushing water over a mountain precipice. Catch a glimpse of an elk, deer or mountain goat munching on native grasses, or laugh over the antics of the many chipmunks, marmots and pika that run across the landscape. Ouray's outdoor playground leaves noone behind when it comes to rock climbing, jeeping, trail hiking, photography, shopping, swimming, fishing and just about any other adventure you can think of!
