Cozy cottage with a terrible neighbor

  • 2 of 5

This is our second month in Key West. First, we rented on Stock Island in sunset marina, it is phenomenal out there, but too far removed from downtown, so we found this cottage.

I'd like to give a realistic review so positive comments first:

1. The realty company is marvelous, Paola is attentive and responsive. I'd not hesitate to rent through them again.

2. The house has a perfect location to get any where you'd want to go downtown, plus off street parking is like gold in Key West.

3. The grounds are well managed, the house was tidy and clean upon arrival.

4. The bedrooms are spacious and the high ceilings give a nice airy quality to the home.

5. It's in a quiet neighborhood, but still close enough to enjoy the busier sections of town.

6. The downstairs bathroom is nice, and the appliances work well.

Negative comments:

1. I was under the opinion that the realty company controlled the common areas, this is not so, the HOA does, and the reason I gave this property such low stars is because the house shares a beautiful tropical outdoor area. Which is fine, the neighbor to the left is a lovely woman named Karen. However, the neighbor behind is an older gentleman who enjoys stalking the pool area. I have two teenage daughters, who felt very uncomfortable under his watchful eye. At one point he removed them from the pool at 9:00pm, so that he, himself could get in the pool. It was after pool hours, which is slightly ludicrous too they go 8am-8pm. So, my family's main complaint is with the pool overlord. Who truly, wants no one in the pool. Every morning he would come and dump boxes of baking soda into the pool. The night he put my children out, he dumped it on them. He's aggressive and abrasive. He told us all month he was having a party. He had the realty company keep us out of the pool that entire day. They compensated us, so we stayed out. However, his party goers didn't even get in the pool.

He's always home, lurking like a creeper.

2. There is no shower in the upstairs bathroom. The tub doesn't drain well, and the fixtures fall off when you turn them. If you are tall like me, it's hard to reach your head with the hand held shower nozzle.

3. Without fans it gets intensely hot upstairs.

4. The house is better suited for 4 people, not six. The living room is small, and there is only one couch and a chair, that are not entirely comfortable.

5. There is no ice maker in the freezer, there are 4 ice trays, we had to buy ice all month.

Charming Conch house with parking and great location.

  • 5 of 5

First off the rental agent, Paola with Royal Palms Realty is excellent- responsive, helpful and knowledgeable. Great to work with.

The house is in a very popular neighborhood, Bahama Village, close to everything; Ft Zachery Taylor Beach and several very trendy restaurants are only several blocks away (Blue Heaven, Firefly, Santiago Bodega, and a crepes and wine bar ..all on Petronia St). Duval is two blocks away. It is all here.

The parking space makes this property very desirable. Parking is tight in much of Old Town and certainly so in Bahama Village. If you are going to have a car, you need a parking space to avoid a lot of frustration. The house itself is very nice. Nicely furnished. Kitchen has a full complement of dishes and cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc. You are all set there. In back there is a covered rear deck for this house and a community pool that is shared by the three properties in the condo group. Small plunge pool typical of Key West and it is a nice touch. Front porch is a good place to sit and people watch. The bed in what I would consider the master bedroom was comfortable. The only drawback is that it is located in the front of the house and can be a occasionally noisy with neighbors talking and passersby, but this is Old Town and you get that anywhere, so it is not really a criticism unique to this property. I only used the one bedroom because I rented the house by myself. It is well priced and a very good value for three bedrooms. It would be a good rental for a family, I think the common space might be a bit tight for six adults. Two couples would be fine.

I would not hesitate to rent this property.

Key West Get Away

  • 5 of 5

For the fourth year in a row we rented the house on 903 Thomas Street and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is located close enough to walk to all the "sites" but in a quiet residential setting. The house itself is comfortable and includes all the amenities one needs!

charming house

  • 4 of 5

903 Thomas is a special spot for my friends and me. We especially enjoy the outdoor area with the canvas top. The pool is good for a dip if it gets hot. This February the water temperature was refreshing, not too hot, not too cold. Other years we would have enjoyed running the heater but were told by a neighbor condo owner that we, as tenants, weren't allowed to heat the pool, even briefly.

The parking spot is a definite plus. The vast majority of parking places on Thomas St. are designated "resident only". Parking is at a premium all over town, so it's very good to have a designated place to park.

There is a great deal of noise in the area periodically, beyond the roosters. This has impacted us on occasion. The complex has a 10 p.m. quiet time which is respected most of the time.

I have returned to the house every February for 5 years, so I am willing to make compromises in order to enjoy the cottage. I have learned over the years that every rental in Key West has some issues. I am always grateful for my time there.

Stayed the whole month of Jan 2015. This home is perfect in everyway. It is a beautiful home - enjoyed the pool and the deck and the front porch. It is a great location - can walk to everything - beaches - marinas - mallory square, grocery store, drug store - everything is within walking distance. It is priced so well - especially compared to other homes. And the management of this property is great - only had one issue with the cable and they responded immediately and resolved it quickly. Can't say enough about this stay - would do it again in a heartbeat.
