A private riverfront fishing and boating vacation

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, Sleeps 8

Just 20 miles from Fort Drum, Camp Wegatchie is located on the Oswegatchie River near Oxbow, NY. It's the perfect place to stay when visiting family or friends. The cabin provides a very private setting with panoramic water views from every room. There's excellent fishing for small mouth bass, bullhead, walleye and pike in the river and it's also prime habitat for the protected lake sturgeon which is making a comeback in the area and can reach 60 inches in length. We provide canoes and kayaks at no charge (security deposit required). There are many surrounding lakes which offer additional fishing or paddling opportunities. If you would like to bring your own boat, there's a place to keep it at the cabin. A variety of waterfowl, birds, deer, turkey and an occasional bald eagle are some of the wildlife you're likely to see. The updated cabin has an adequate master bedroom with a full size bed plus a second bedroom with two sets of bunk beds, including one double bed. The living room couch also pulls out to a double. The cabin comfortably accommodates 6 adults but can sleep 8 when using the sleeper couch. The Village of Oxbow is just 2 miles away for gas & convenience items. The Town of Gouverneur is 8 miles away for major groceries, shopping, dining, bowling, golf and hospital. The resort town of Alexandria Bay is 25 miles away and it's just 40 miles to Watertown and the big box stores. Our local watering hole is the Riverside Hotel and Grill, a historical former stagecoach stop.

There are many pristine lakes in our area, most of which have public access. Yellow Lake is part of the Yellow Lake State Forest which you can hike to from the cabin.

We have a small winery and sampling room in the area and many others in Clayton and surrounding towns. Antique shops abound all along the major roadways throughout upstate New York.

Everyone loves the big rope swing that drops you off in the deep part of the river right out in front of the cabin.

About Robert Wynkoop

A group of us have been coming to the area for duck hunting since 1979. The property was acquired by me and two friends in 2001. It's made it possible to continue our commaraderie and share the same experiences we "guys" had with our wives and children. It took ten years of infrequent 'work weekends' to fix it up such that we felt it was ready to be shared with the occasional renter. It's all been a labor of love and well worth it. We think it's pretty cool.

Robert Wynkoop purchased this cottage in 2001

What makes this cottage unique

The first morning you roll out of bed and take in the sweeping panoramic view from the three living room sliders and six foot wide kitchen picture window, you'll think, "Wow, this is so cool".

The kids won't be able to get enough of the rope swing right out front.

Family Fun!!!!

Great place. Can't beat the location on the river. Cabin is well furnished and neat. One of best I have been in. Rope swing was a lot of fun. Water is 20-25 feet deep right off the banks. Off the beaten path(which is what I like) but close enough to major shopping in Gouvenour, NY, just 8 miles away. For the adventurous, whitewater rafting on one of the best rivers, The Black River, is only 25 miles away in Watertown. Owners and caretaker are very cordial and accommodating.

Quiet and secluded. Pretty. Great for couples, young adults. Didn't care for the ants in the kitchen or the double bed. TV didn't come in but we didn't care about that. Overall we enjoyed our stay

Owner's Response: You're in touch with nature at Camp Wegatchie - maybe a little too much when some ants show up in the kitchen. We do our best to protect against that each Spring. So glad you enjoyed your week.

Great Cabin, Great Location, Great Fun

  • 5 of 5

This is a very nicely equipped cabin in a very secluded area -- we spent the entire week and never saw anyone near the cabin. Kitchen is nicely equipped with plenty of cooking supplies. The river was fun for swimming and the rope swing was a blast. Nice fire pit. The property managers were friendly and helpful, and easy to deal with. Would definitely rent again.

Enduring Memories

  • 5 of 5

My family with six kids stayed at Camp Wegatchie for three weeks due to some extended leave. Not only was the price reasonable, but the facility was clean, accommodating and entertaining. Most days we never even left the cabin, but stayed there while the kids swam in the river, jumped off the rope swing and fished. Never once did I hear "I'm bored" or "can we go somewhere" even though we were there three weeks. We caught a lot of feisty smallmouth in the Oswegatchie and some monster bass and great pike in very nearby rivers and lakes. The owner and his property manager were always available for questions and were helpful throughout our stay. We had several guests drop by while we were there and all of them were impressed as well. We hope we can be back soon...this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5

This little vacation rental is amazing, I spent 10 days here with my family and would go back to rent it anytime. The place is spotless and even better than described in the listing. The river is perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. We caught huge cat fish, and a few nice sized bass. The cabin itself has everything you could ever want, the rooms are a generous size as is the living space and kitchen. It's far enough away from town that you feel secluded but close enough to drive if you need anything. The kitchen had every type of pot/pan and utensil! If you stay here I would definitely make use of the kayaks and canoe. I would rate this vacation up in my top 2, and the owner is very friendly. The ONLY downside is the mosquitoes, (bring extra bug spray). I know my kids and their cousins will remember this for a lifetime.
