Cabin needs some work
Just finished staying here. Views are great, and the cabin feel is nice, but the cabin itself needs some work.
From the time we got there to when the previous renters were in the cabin was about 2 months. In that time frame, there were several cobwebs, spider webs, dead spiders, dead bugs that had accumulated in the place, either underneath chairs in the dining room, in the bathtub, or other places in the cabin. Given, it's a cabin, but at least would have expected some of these to be cleaned up. The kitchen sink then provided us with a leak that was due to the kitchen sprayer not functioning properly, thereby leaking under the cabinet and onto the floor. The backdoor takes all your strength, and then some, to get it either opened or closed, meaning either the door bottom or door frame bottom needs to be sanded down. The trash from the previous rentals was also not taken out as it should have been, which would indicate that someone hadn't been there to do that previously, so we just took our trash out and down the mountain. The bathtub also does not drain properly, allowing 2 inches of water in the tub when you shower. The drive up and down the mountain as well should be explained that it will take you 20 minutes one way, so be careful in the dark.
Overall, we dealt with the issues, but to be honest, expected a little bit more from this than what we got as we have rented several times in this area previously.
Fantastic mountain cabin!
Mammy's Cabin was a great vacation spot! The cabin was exactly as described with everything needed for a relaxing fun-filled week. The cabin was very clean and plenty of firewood was provided to make fires in the stone fireplace. Linda and Charlie (owners) were very helpful and called mid-week to make sure everything was going well. The views from both sides (front and back) are breathtaking and won't soon be forgotten. Be sure to enjoy the view of sunrise over the mountains while sitting in the hot tub...nothing compares to that! There's plenty of hiking trails nearby and the cabin is mid-way between Highlands and Franklin, NC for sightseeing and shopping. I'm already looking forward to my next stay!
This trip was our first time to the area and we loved it.
We were looking for a quiet place to spend some family time and we found it! The cabin sits atop a mountain ridge line and we were treated to the city lights of Franklin below and the beautiful night sky above.
There is everything you need at Mammy's Cabin. We picked up our groceries at the new Bi-Lo just off 28/64 before going up to the cabin. I was happy to see a few basics waiting for us in the cabinets as well like coffee filters, spices and a few necessities I had forgotten to purchase. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment.
The cabin is cozy but not small. We enjoyed having the satellite, dvd and the Internet available to us. It did rain one day so we opted to pile up and enjoy some movies and a roaring fire. There was plenty of firewood available. We were up in a cloud, literally.
I never made it up to the loft but my daughter loved it up there. Perfect for her to get away. The main floor bedroom was very comfortable. They have thought of everything, provided plenty of towels and even a couple of robes for the hot tub.
The view off the back deck is amazing. Soaking in the tub after a day spent touring the area's water falls and Franklin was a real luxury.
The cabin is rustic, but wonderful. If you are looking to spend some time in a REAL cabin in the woods, this is the place. It's well loved and well looked after. Linda is very accommodating and really cares for her place and her guests. We will definitely return. BTW, our dog loved it too! She sat on the back deck and watched the world go by for quite a while. We all felt welcome and didn't want to leave.
Close to Heaven!
I rented this sweet little cabin for 5 days. I didn't want to leave. This rental place was surreal. I forgotten how wonderful it was to have silence and a sense of peace. When you walk up to this cabin the view is just breath taking. It overlooks mountains from every angle. Then when you walk in the front door you feel like you have just walked into a "home" from the past. It is very quaintly decorated and everything is 'real'. It is very clean and warm. The fireplace warms up the whole home and if you are still cold there are heaters to help. The kitchen has everything you need and then some! The bathroom is a standard tub/shower and has enough room to move in. Not like other cabins that I have stayed at. The beds are great to sleep on. The back porch is wonderful. Part of it is covered and the other not. Sitting under the covered part in the early am hours was great. I was able to watch the birds feed at the feeder. There is a very nice gas grill for grilling and a heater hot tub at 102 degrees just waiting to be used. I personally loved crawling up on the sofa with a fire in the fireplace and napping! Mammy (Mrs. Linda) couldn't have been nicer. She is a spitfire and I sure hope to be like her when I am her age. She made you feel right at home. The history of the cabin is incredible and so was the restoration work that was put into this cabin to restore it. Not to mention that this little cabin is pet friendly and my dogs loved it. They loved the walks up and down the road and the porches on the cabin. If you are looking for a cabin that feels like "home" and brings a smile to your face and warms your heart...This is your cabin. Now with that being said...please don't schedule your renting time when I schedule mine! :)
Our amazing expierience begins with the owner's, Mammy and Charlie. The two of them are the most welcoming, appreciative, kind and generous people we have ever met. Mammy and Charlie definately have the art of southern hospitality perfected. It is no wonder Mammy's cabin has such a warm, welcoming, tranquil feel to it. If you desire flashy, glamourous surrondings in the lime-light than this is definately not your ideal match. However, if you desire warmth, tranquility, relaxation with magnificant views in total silence and privacy than you have reached your perfect destination. This cabin's best feature is the view and scenery around it. The secluded, but covered porch and jacuzzi hangs over a ledge with a view of the peaks of the mountains in the horizon. The mornings are filled with the Great Smoky Mountain's famous "smoke" flowing over top the cabin then across all the visible mountain peaks in your view; meanwhile birds chirp all around and leaves flow in the breeze. Inside you will find everything you could possibly need including the warm fire place that you may keep going throughout your entire stay with plenty of pre chopped wood stored down stairs. We have visited many places in our lives, however; never any as marvelous as this and from such wonderful owner's. This cabin is centrally located between Franklin and Highlands, leaving every diversity on entertainment at your disposal. We found Mason Mine (not Mason Mountain Mine) to be a fabolous dig your own mine deep in the mountains. Also, Cafe Rel is a french cuisine restaurant in Franklin that is linked to Hot Spot (yes a gas station, lol) best food you will ever eat (including culinary in New York City, Chicago and even Paris) I am convinced, due to the reasonable expense of such a speacial, one of a kind expierience that Mammy and Charlie provide; they must rent this cabin out to recieve the pleasure of others smiles and stories. YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER BARGAIN!!
Peace and Quiet
Mammy's Cabin is a cozy cabin high in the mountains. It has spectacular views that melt away all the stresses of every day life. You could easily get carried away admiring the majestic mountains while seated in a rocking chair, listening to the wind chimes and watching the hummingbirds.
That's pretty much how I spent the time there, but I was joined by my semi-rambunctious pup and my thrill seeking father, so we took advantage of the hiking that the mountain offers. We picked wild strawberries along the road and took a hike through a Christmas tree nursery -- all walking from Mammy's!
The cabin is very well stocked, clean, and comfortable. At night we sat by the fireplace and read, but TV was an option as well. I saw lots of family movies on the shelf. We had no trouble cooking all our meals there as the walls are lined with cast iron pans and all the cabinets are full of basic ingredients and lots of supplies. I slept in the loft area very comfortably, and my dad said the main bedroom was great as well. The water is really fresh, pumped from a well, so showering is a treat and great for your hair.
Did I mention my dog loved it here? Great place to bring a dog and wander the mountain together enjoying the fresh air. We didn't get in our car except to drive away, but there seemed to be a lot of activities in Franklin on our way out. We were personally seeking the peace and solitude of the mountains, and we sure got it. Also, driving up is slightly difficult, but I have a Jeep so it was no problem.
I probably shouldn't go on because I want to be able to reserve this cabin often, but the owners deserve a great review. They brought us a truckload of fire wood and fresh organic eggs!
Very special, beautiful place.
Activity and Interests
Hiking is wonderful. Just walk out front door and take a hike. Franklin is the gem capital of the USA. Many Gem Mines in the area. Abundant in sapphires and rubies. Rafting and tubing are the big sports. Many beautiful good whitewater rivers for these activities. Franklin has a wonderful entertainment theatre with live plays and entertainment. Downtown Franklin on Saturday night, take a folding chair (at the cabin) and go downtown to the square (gazebo) and enjoy some good free entertainment. Lot of fun places to shop. Children enjoy the Fun Factory and the Franklin Bowling Alley. Need to check your e-mail? We have high speed now! Antiquing is very good in the area. Take a day trip to Asheville and visit the Biltmore Estate, Cherokee to visit the Indians and/or Harrah's Casino, Gatlinburg, and Dollywood. Many large beautiful waterfalls in the area. Visit Highlands (only 25 miles from Mammy's) and enjoy the scenic drive. On the way to Highlands, stop at Dry Falls and walk under the waterfall. Two 19 hole golf courses in Franklin. This can be the most fun and the most economical vacation you could possibly have.
