Why Karen & Jimbo Rusley chose Isla Mujeres

While dealing with a recent plateful of Fibromyalgic pain, I couldn't help but notice the difference in my life on Isla Mujeres and it's effectiveness in dealing with the misunderstood family of syndromes that have plagued me for decades that including Chronic Fatigue and Restless Leg. There are many that wonder why I spend time on the island… away from my family and friends and have begun to build a life here…on the surface there are many that might view my choice to be here as selfish, self-indulgent and an unnecessary luxury…I urge you to look deeper. Although my need for the approval of others diminishes the older I get, I submit the following as a way for others to understand the purpose in a different light. The fact is that in many ways, la isla has been and continues to be a salvation from the joint stiffness, debilitating fatigue and sleep problems associated with life in a Colorado climate when compared to the warmer, tropical climate I find myself in now. Just as my wife Karen continues to have a profound effect on me and my ability to cope thru her gentle touch and loving smile, la isla's tranquil feel and healing characteristics have had a significant impact on the quality of my life. In a similar way, our discovery of the island has resurrected my life in spirit and in functionality. As I look at my life I cannot help but feel thankful for the greatest gifts provided to me by God: my loving parents… my beautiful children… my wife who is truly the love of my life… and the gift of Isla Mujeres. Disfruta la vida. Jimbo

What makes this house unique

the rhythm of the neighborhood...…is amazing and beautiful to me…it is amazing to wake up to the sunrise, sometimes softly, sometimes with a slap in the face as it wakes us...the roosters (plural) and the turkey next door don't bother me at all..they make me smile every time i hear them...even if it is 4:00 in the morning...signals the start of another lucky day here on la isla...(i love it when i am driving down the road and a chicken crosses in front of me...makes me chuckle inside...and sometimes out loud...) vendors begin their parade up and then down the street selling pastries, cocos, tortillas, fruits usually a bit too early for my tastes around 7:00 or so…and lasts into the evening... in just one or two blocks, i see so many people that i know and that i work with or buy from and we have all become neighbors and friends, where everyone helps each other with breakfast, car problems, FM3 questions, groceries, lost keys... in a quick ten minutes I see and waive hello to Ramiro, Ron, Oscar, Luis, Polo, Lori, Zowie, Antonio, Carolyn, Ricardo and a couple of kids on the street… i make it back to the house to enjoy the delicious cinnamon roll and enjoy the rhythm of the waves in the water…they are relentless and relaxing, powerful and soothing… as Sunday evening rolls around, you can hear the music in the street begin to wind down…this is such a quiet neighborhood and a quiet street…by 9:00, all is quiet…and will stay that way until the sun rises and we start the rhythm of the neighborhood all over again… while some folks watch tv in the evenings, we like to just sit out on the front deck and watch folks come and go on the all sounds so simple...and it is...and that is just how i like it... disfruta la vida… Jimbo

Jimbo and Karen are amazing hosts! From my first email to them and any subsequent they were prompt in replying. Often replying within the hour. Once on the island you are well taken care of by their son, who is the property manager, Lorenzo and Lydia, the cleaning lady! The entire time from booking to leaving you feel part of their family and as an honored guest.

The upper floor is perfect as well! The hot tub and balcony are the ideal places for a morning coffee or evening nightcap. All the appliances are in great working order and the A/C in the bedrooms is perfect for cooling the rooms at night and ensuring a comfortable sleep. If you do have any problems all the above mentioned people are prompt in addressing your concerns and can be reached from the house phone or cell phone. The WiFi in the house always worked and had a strong connection. We also feel safe in the house the entire time.

The Isla itself is paradise! The laid-back atmosphere and friendly environment leave you captured in the moment. Closest to the Casa is the Mango Cafe which has AMAZING food, as well as great staff! Other than the Cafe, in centro, there is Jax and Belly's which have really good food as well. Nash's is another gem hidden in the heart of centro. For us the best part of Nash's is that he was a fellow Canadian and had great service.

Breathtaking Views and a Lovely Stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Roca Caribe after having travelled from Tulum and it was a welcome respite. The condo was spacious for four people, including my husband, 12 year old stepdaughter and my 82 year old, (very active) mother.

The best thing about it was the breathtaking 24 hour experience of the crashing ocean waves directly below and in front of us. I have stayed at a number of oceanfront homes and condos in the Caribbean and Atlantic, but this was by far, the most breathtaking and astounding ocean front experience I have had.

The patio is large and the pool was lovely to swim in. We sat and relaxed out there whenever we weren't out somewhere on the island.

This was my first trip to Mexico, so I wasn't sure what to expect but this place was special, and I felt grateful that we stayed there. All of Jimbo and Karen's suggestions were very helpful from restaurants, to golf carts and using the ferry and pesos! Lorenzo was a gem, helped us get fresh bread and took us snorkeling on a private boat. We had a great time and saw a lot of beautiful fish.

It was nice to have use of the washer dryer and maid service was an added bonus with fresh towels, making up the beds and helping with our dishes. Basically, we had the privacy of having our own condo with the amenities of a hotel.

I felt quite safe here in a unique part of the island, away from the busier more touristy areas. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay. Cheers to Jim, Karen, Lorenzo, Lydia and Elliot!

Favorite Isla Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for one week the last three years, and thoroughly enjoyed the house and staff. This year we stayed on the lower pool level for the first time, and enjoyed the space which is very similar on both levels (two bedrooms, one to two baths, a living space, dining table, and kitchen...pool on the lower level or hot tub on the upper level). We love the views from the patio, especially the "front row" spot to watch the sunrise. We even saw a few turtles making their way back to the water early in the morning this trip! We also enjoyed the local food and the church down the street, and it has been fun meeting other guests from around the globe. Overall, this rental is three for three as a very relaxing and great Isla location. We will be back ASAP, likely next summer!

Amazing stay with a view of the sea

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was nothing less than balm to the soul. Waking every morning to the waves and going to sleep under the bright stars of the Caribbean...could anything be better? The apartment is very well-appointed and comfortable. The staff is super-helpful and kind. Great, quiet location off the beaten path. What's not to love? We will definitely be back!

Beatuiful Property Nautibeach Condos

  • 5 of 5

I've walked by Nautibeach many times and always commented on how nice they looked. Well, I finally stayed there and was very impressed. The rooms are very nice, in good shape, and very roomy. The balcony view is good. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The beach is only about a hundred feet away. Lounge chairs, umbrellas are available. I would highly recommend this property. I ate lunch one day at the Mayan Beach Club (formally Sunset Grill) which is located right there and it was good. Definitely a good location on the island. I will go back there again. I give this a 5 star rating.
