About emita hill

Now a retired academic, author, grandmother, scuba diver, ballroom dancer. I fell in love with this house and this street and especially Long Island Sound out my windows and at my feet. I raised my children here while my husband and I taught in universities. I never want to leave the house but am away every July/August when other lucky families can share the pleasure and the beauty of this location--rural and yet so close to Manhattan.

emita hill purchased this house in 1969

What makes this house unique

An elegant Victorian home with high ceilings, many rooms with windows on three sides, a spacious living room and dining room, a provincial French kitchen, and the beach, always the beach and the ever changing waters of the Sound from high tide to low, from crescent moon to full, still and frothy with waves. It feeds the soul and delights the body. It's a home that is greatly loved and lovingly cared for, something I expect also from my renters.

Lots of CDs and even LPs and the equipment to play them. TV and DVD player. The treasure (at least for the owner) is a Steinway piano. Air conditioners throughout the house. Linens provided. an unexpected get away

  • 5 of 5

My family and I rented Sunrise House for the summer a few years ago and had great memories of our time there. When I found that I had to travel from Europe to NY for a week long conference I contacted the owner on a whim to see if I could rent a room for the week, she agreed and I spent a relaxing week at Sunrise House.

The house has the benefits of an idyllic location and is an easy walk to the train station to commute to Manhattan.

Enjoyable Summer

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying in this large and rustic house located on a quiet road in New Rochelle. The house is located a ½ block from a small private beach making for enjoyable evenings and weekends. The family loved swimming at high tide and playing on the beach. We had a kayak and were able to kayak around the harbor enjoying the sites and all the birds. The neighbors are very friendly. The house is about a 20 minute walk to the New Rochelle Train station which makes commuting to NYC easy. The house is large and spacious and the kitchen works well.

The House Calling Back

  • 5 of 5

Summer 2013 was the second one my family and I spent in the Sunrise House. Got another confirmation that this is a perfect house in a perfect place. Variety of activities for the kids (we have two, 10 and 7) around, friendly and hospitable neighbours (we became friends) with the wonderful kids. 60 seconds from the beach. Best view for a fireworks on the Independence Day. 30 minutes from Manhattan to visit Metropolitan, MoMA etc. Quick drive to upstate to enjoy hot summer days in the mountains and what not. Fantastic choice of the books and classic music is available in-house. What else you may need to enjoy the life in summer near the water in the house like this (with a spirit and a characte!). And the hospitable owner...always welcome you with a nice bottle of red wine and selection of cheese :-). ENJOY! Andrey.

Cosy House In A Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

My family lives in Europe but my business often takes me to New York so we were seeking a property with an option of convenient commuting to Manhattan but a real vacation complete with beaches, swimming, entertainment for my wife and children. We weren't sure such a place existed, but then we found Sunrise House.

The house itself has a charming signature. Big enough to give everyone privacy (there were 5 of us), standing in a shady greenish environment, safe place, several steps from a private beach, walking distance from the nice park, yacht club and recreational area as well as from a nice restaurant. Calm and peaceful place with fantastic hospitable neighbors (having kids)….very comfortable for a family.

There is fantastic collection of books and classical music as well as variety of toys and books for kids. It gives parents some time to enjoy each other while children play?. If you like grilling you have a chance to cook and enjoy it on the front porch of the Sunrise House.

We used the beach quite often for swimming, playing and even yachting/kayaking. The Metro North train station is an easy 15 minute walk and the train to Grand Central is just 35 minutes, so I was at my office in Manhattan in one hour door to door.

And of course with such a location you can enjoy all the benefits of Manhattan: museums, shows, opera etc. Grocery stores, vegetable markets, fresh fish store were also all within easy walking distance. There are also some terrific restaurants in the neighborhood.

We would gladly return to rent this property again when we return to New Rochelle!

What a great house!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this wonderful property for the summer months of 2011 (May-August) while my husband was on a short-term assignment in New York City. The house itself is roomy, charming, and very comfortable for a family. Booked shelves line a comfortable and spacious living room, there is a formal dining room for family dinners, and a terrific kitchen. We also used the front porch and barbeque grill quite often.

The neighborhood was ideal for us (a family with a kindergarten aged son). We used the beach almost every day, for swimming, playing and fishing. We also tried ocean kayaking which was a great way to see the water birds. The house is located on a cul de sac so it is only about 30 yards from the front door to the beach. There is also a nice park adjacent to the house, which we used every day as well, with swings, sliding boards, and another beach.

The Metro North train station is an easy 15 minute walk, so we used that to get into Manhattan on the few days that we wanted to go into the city (My husband used the train daily for commuting)....and of course grocery stores, vegetable markets, fresh fish store were also all within easy walking distance. There are also some terrific restaurants in the neighborhood.

Slightly further afield, we also visited the Bronx Zoo, and many of the waterfront towns in Westchester County, which have wonderful children's libraries, summer outdoor concerts, Fourth of July celebrations and so on.

We would gladly return to rent this property again when we return to New Rochelle!
