The Sea Rose - with Private beach access & kayaks to rent

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedroom, 1 Baths, Sleeps 7

**This is a summer through fall rental only. We are currently booking for fall and summer 2017. Get in touch early, as the summer is a busy time on North Haven and its best to book in advance.

Come get away to our island home far from the busyness of daily life. Unplug, sit back and relax on our quiet peaceful porch. Take a breathtaking ferry ride and stay in our lovely 4 bedroom, 1 bath, house on the island of North Haven, Maine. The house is set on a saltwater marsh with cattails, herons, osprey, bald eagles and all sorts of other wildlife for viewing. The house looks out on Bartlett’s Harbor with a panoramic view of the harbor and beyond. Bartlett’s harbor has a private walk-able (at the end of the road - about 150 ft away) beach shared by the other property owners, often you may be the only person on the beach. It is very quiet and peaceful. The water is clear, amazingly clean. The water in Maine is cold, but I remember that didn't stop me from swimming when I was a kid! Bring a wet suit or an inner tube and you won't even notice.

At night you will hear basically nothing and you can lie or sit on the porch under a blanket as we did as children and stare at the stars to count how many shooting stars you see.

Our family has gone to Maine every summer for 54 years and we love the family time it allows us and the peacefulness we feel after our time there. We hope you do too!

About Sarah Dugan

I live on Bainbridge Island in Washington State (across from Seattle by ferry!) with husband and two kids. Where I live now is very similar to North Haven, though unfortunately very far away from it. I grew up spending my summers in North Haven with my grandmother. She originally bought this house. I have fond memories traveling all over the island by myself on my bike and exploring. It is such a wonderful place of peace and beauty. The house is now owned by my mother and aunt, and I help rent it out for them. You most likely will be communicating with me first, and then Laura (my aunt) once you have booked.

What makes this house unique

Bartlett's Harbor is a unique place because of the beach cove. It is quiet, secluded, private and swim-able because of the inner cove. You won't have giant waves thrashing at you. The beach is walk-able, and the harbor is a great place to row, kayak, or windsurf. The deck off our house looks over the harbor and the saltwater marsh and sitting on that deck has brought many generations of my family great peace.

The kitchen is fully equipped (sorry no dishwasher), linens are provided, and some games for kids and adults are there. Along with the four bedrooms there is a living room with a couch and tv, a dining/den room where the dining table seats about 5 comfortably (more if you move some furniture around), and a kitchen with a table for eating informally. The porch sits on the marsh and has an unobstructed view of the harbor. There is a charcoal grill outside, so you have three different places to eat depending on your mood or the weather! On the east side of the house there is space to store bikes, boats, etc (though it is not covered).

Willmarsh was exactly as promised, including shooting stars, osprey and bald eagles. House was clean and stocked with everything we needed, including appropriate pots for steaming lobsters and clams and plenty of beach towels. We even located the binoculars so that we could get a close view of a Great Blue Heron atop a tree and a bald eagle hunting for breakfast. The owners were wonderful - start to finish - making sure we had what we needed for an enjoyable stay yet allowing us the privacy and independence to have a magnificent vacation. Only possible downside is the steep stairs with the bathroom on the main floor - a possible hazard for small children or elderly.

The house is located close enough to the island's only grocery store that we could easily grab supplies and a WIFI connection if needed, but far enough away from the village that we had plenty of opportunity to enjoy star shows and bird song. Favorite activities at the house included sitting on the porch, day and night, and feeling all of the stresses and concerns of mainland life melt away. Favorite activities on the island included trips to Turner Farms to see the animals and purchase delicious cheeses and vegetables, trips to the farm on Crabtree Road for homemade honey and sausages and local eggs, kayaking in Pulpit Harbor, looking for sea glass at Mullins Head, walking to Crabtree Point and Community Days (The codfish race was unforgettable!). Also enjoyed cocktails and appetizers at Nebo, as well as a delightful dinner, but if you want to dine there, make your reservation early!

We saw one family in Rockland who didn't understand the system for getting a car on the ferry and ended up having to leave their car (someone drove it on for them the next day). Make sure you understand how it all works!
