About Joe Curley

I am a married father of two, avid hockey player and fishing enthusiast with a successful track record in waterfront real estate operations and investments. I had always enjoyed my visit to the Keys over the years as I just found the area so unique. I thought it be cool to have a place in the keys that I could use when I visited. Crystal clear waters with sandy white bottoms, warm temps year round, incredible water views, the best fishing and diving available in the Continental U.S. I couldn't think of a better place to own a vacation home. While searching for that perfect Keys home, and having rented homes for my own vacations in the past, I made the decision to only buy a home that could also be a vacation rental. This meant that it had to have an open water view, good accessible dock, and that could be legally rented by the week. I purchase my first property in the City of Marathon in 2009. Today I run a small successful vacation home rental business with 5 homes with my wife Mary.

Why I chose Marathon, FL

Marathon's central location in the Middle Keys was the clear choice. Investment was starting to come into the area after the economic recession. Far enough away from the hustles of life but with the conveniences most people want when they vacation. Marathon was also one of the few areas of the Keys where you can rent homes by the week. All the basic necessities to call it home for many with 2 grocery stores, a Home Depot, library, parks and marine oriented businesses plus a few dozen restaurants/bars, boat rentals, charters and dive shops for its vibrant tourism industry.

So much to do right within the city limits or your backyard if you rent one of our homes. Visit historic Key West, less than an hour drive away.

Why Joe Curley chose Marathon

The home sits on a quiet crystal clear saltwater cove - we like it so much we own 4 other homes on his cove. The home itself is has a unique octagonal design with water views from every point in the main living area. Unobstructed view of Gulf of Mexico, easy deep water access to our dock, and a relaxing tropical setting and great outdoor experience

What makes this house unique

Fish, dive, snorkel onsite. Take a dip in the pool or relax under the tiki hut and take in the view of the the wildlife.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My family and I were so pleased with this property at Marathon Key. The home was spacious and uncluttered and the pool and dock area were beautifully landscaped. My son had a great time trying to crack the coconuts that fell off the palm trees surrounding the property. The inside of the home was spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed having our morning coffee or evening drinkss from the tiki hut and relaxing in the hammock chairs. The fishermen among us could cast off the dock directly and caught several fish. This is one property that lived up to expectations generated by the web site. We would certainly stay there again on another visit. (enter on behalf of Bonds Family)

Great View

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. Everything was clean and the photos are very accurate. The kitchen had plenty of amenities. The view every morning out the window was perfect with a cup of coffee. The 2nd bedrom and bath were a little smaller than we had anticipated but we made it work. It's located in a nice area and check in and check out was very easy.

Second Year and Better than the First

  • 5 of 5

This is the second consecutive year that we have vacationed in Marathon at this property and we came away with such a great experience that we already booked 2018 at the property.

The property itself: The house and grounds are exactly as described and pictured in the listing, if anything, the pictures don't it justice. The grounds around the pool, tiki hut, and dock are filled with palm trees and have the feel of a tropical garden. The house has plenty of parking and storage room for a boat trailer or bikes. The pool was clean with the heat on when we arrived, the pool was a favorite of our kids (6 and8). The dock is plenty big enough for any boat you're going to trailer; we docked our 17 foot center counsel with about 40 feet to spare. It also provides a great spot to relax with your beverage and put an eye on the sea life that is clearly visible from the dock. Inside the house is clean, comfortable, and well appointed.

Just a note about the house being a duplex, the single negative review is centered on the fact it's a duplex. The outside are huge relative to other waterfront rentals we looked at in the keys, this "duplex" affords more privacy than a great deal of homes in areas where they at stacked together along the waterfront. Being a duplex is a non-issue.

The area of Marathon: We are a boating family so I may have a built-in bias. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, a beach, an aquarium, and lots other activities to keep yourself busy during your vacation, all within a 5 minute drive. If you bringing or renting a boat, gulf is less than 5 minutes of no-wake canal/lagoon from the house’s dock. We had great weather and where able to run out 10-12 miles out into the gulf, we also made the 15 minute boat ride to fish the 7 mile bridge to. If boating or fishing are your passion, than this house is perfect. We had great fishing and we're not pro fishermen at all. After a trip to one the many local bait shops I followed the advice of the locals and my whole family caught plenty of fish. Including our 8 year old son, he brought 2 different 20plus inch mackerel, one which was in the ballpark of 24 inches gave him the fishing fight and the thrill of his angling life.

Overall I would recommend this house to anyone, property is great, check in/out is simple, and the Curley’s are easy and helpful to deal with.

This was our 2nd year and already booked for the future. This property is well maintained with a beautiful setting. This is the perfect layout for fishing/boating or just relaxing. Deep/easy access to the gulf. The pool is a big plus and serviced often. The owners had replaced several new items this year; freezer, couch, washing machine, and the best BBQ Grill!!! The Tiki Hut provides a great place to catch up on your emails or just sit in the shade a bit. The kitchen is well stocked with the essential amenities. The open kitchen and great room provides plenty of sitting and lounging room for the entire family.

Loved every minute!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the opportunity to escape 26 inches of snow and frigid temperatures and spend three wonderful weeks in the Keys. Joe Curley’s home is everything and more, and we are already in the process of securing a reservation for 2017.

The house itself is bright, airy and impeccably clean, offering unparalleled views of the wide canal and on out to Florida Bay. The width of the canal is significant because many Marathon area homes are located on very narrow canals. For those concerned about the shared nature of this property, let me assure you that the two properties feel decidedly separate and provide plenty of very private outdoor space.

We used the outdoor spaces frequently including the private pool area and the tiki hut (great for sunset watching!). We were also delighted to see a pair of small sharks as well as a manatee and so many beautiful birds right from our own backyard. Our little dog was thrilled to find the pool area completely fenced which gave her secure opportunities to chase lizards around the grounds. We were also impressed with how committed the owners are to keeping the grounds looking beautiful. Our pool was cleaned frequently during our stay, and a landscape crew kept the property postcard pretty!

The house is situated in an area convenient to stores and restaurants along Route 1, but nestled in an upscale residential area. A small airport is located nearby, but the planes are generally small (even some pretty cool biplanes), and the noise from take offs wasn’t overly bothersome.

The Marathon area has so many interesting points to explore (most dog friendly), it would be hard to cover them all. Highlights include long walks at Bahia Honda State Park, Long Key State Park and Crane Point Nature center. The Turtle Hospital in town was also a memorable experience.

Once again, we were thrilled with selecting this property and can’t wait for a return trip!

My family and I totally enjoyed our stay at this house! It was very clean, the pool was perfect, and having access to the canal was the icing on the cake. My boys caught some fish right off the dock, we went kayaking, swimming, looking for lizards and coconuts. There were pool toys, sand toys, pack n play, etc. Everything we needed! The owners were very responsive and super helpful too. Thank you!

Great house, great location, great amenities

  • 5 of 5

The house and grounds are just as described and shown in the photos. There was zero trouble checking in or out. Everything in the house, dock, pool, was in good working order, clean, comfortable and well appointed. We did contact the owner and management company to have the pool heat turned on, that service was prompt, friendly, and thorough. As the owner responded in an early review, the pool became dirty a couple times during the week but only because of the excessive wind and the amount or trees in the yard . This was a non-issue for me, this stuff is unavoidable and it took me a couple of minutes with a skimmer to clean it up, my wife enjoyed taunting the "pool boy" anyhow.

The dock is perfect for any boat you should be bringing on vacation, its 5feet (?) deep right off the seawall so it was perfect for our 17 ft CC we brought down. I would highly recommend either bringing or renting a boat, we spent a great deal of time fishing, exploring the reef, or just cruising the canals around Marathon.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house to any friend or family. My family, early 40s with two kids 5 and 7, are looking to book another stay in 2017, the value we feel we received from the Curly's made our decision on a place to go in 2017 rather easy.
