About the Owner
Activity and Interests
Rum Point is at a privileged location at the head of Grindstone Island. Protected in a bay, it offers both a great view of the River as well as calmer waters which make for great swimming.
On the St. Lawrence River one can take a cayak into the marshes and spot tutles, birds, mink and beavers, go waterskiing in the bay, boating on the open River for a sunset cruise, rowing through the channels or sailing past any of the scenic 1800+ islands of the region. Water activities in the St. Lawrence also include tubing, canoeing, fishing (NY license required), snorkeling, and many more.
Turning inland, guests can get to know the island by hiking or biking Grindstone's trails and roads that take you through woods, fields and local farms. On these outings you may spot eagles, deer, foxes, as well as a wide variety of plants and birds.
Grindstone is home to an active community and dotted along the island you'll find small shops that sell arts, crafts and clothing, as well as farms that offer local grass-fed beef.
Rum Point is ideal for family vacations, as it is at the same time a peaceful place in which a day can consist of a walk, a book and leisurely time on the waterfront as well as a place to have days full of activities under the sun, in and out or the water, boats, bicycles and so forth.
Rum Point has two houses available - Lower House and Upper House - that can be rented together or separately.
The Lower House is unique for its waterfront view (from the large windows downstairs, the windows in every bedroom and from the scenic porch), for its ample kitchen, dining room and living quarters and for its tower room. Beautifully furnished and decorated, it can accommodate up to 08 people. Amenities include a washing machine, dishwasher, ironing board, water heater, electirc stove and oven, upright freezer, two full bathrooms + two lavatories and a ping-pong table.
Just a few yards away, the Upper House is an original River house: Having been built in the 1880s in gambrel style, it is more basic than the Lower House, but compensates for it in cozyness and comfort. The wooden staircase, the naturally lit living room and the unique bedrooms stand out in this house surrounded by trees and birds. Amenities include two full bathrooms + a lavatory, gas stove and oven and a stovetop.
Although secluded, Rum Point is only a 20 minute boat ride from Clayton, NY.
Since it is a rural/natural environment we ask that guests be careful and attentive so as not to harm themselves or the River, especially when enjoying water activities. Our swimming spots are off the natural pink granite rocks, characteristic to the Thousand Islands, and have not been altered or developed in any way. For this reason we ask that guests be careful when in swimming areas and to never leave children unattended or unsupervised.
As for equipment for the various activities (such as canoes, cayaks, windsurfs, snorkels, goggles, etc,) we advise guests to bring their own or rent them in Clayton, as we do not provide these.
Grindstone Island has no land connection and can only be reached by boat. There are many marinas in Clayton where guests can rent one. We do not provide any boats.
