About Sheila Wilensky

I'm a New Englander who spent most of my life on Mt. Desert Island. I owned the Oz Children's Bookstore in Southwest Harbor for 15 years, taught at MDI High School and College of the Atlantic. In 2002, I got tired of winter and moved to Tucson for endless sunshine. My partner, Dan, and I return to Southwest Harbor -- which will always be home -- for at least one month in the summer.

I now work as a writer/editor.

My two amazing grown children live in Jersey City and Austin but come home to get married! Ethan and Steph will be married May 30 at the Asticou in Northeast Harbor, which we're all very excited about.

Sheila Wilensky purchased this house in 1993

Why Sheila Wilensky chose Southwest Harbor

We loved the Arts & Crafts style, wood floors and cozy feeling!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"I've stayed several times in this delightful house. It's spacious and full of charm with wood floors and bright accents, and conveniently located - a short walk down to the water, a short drive to trails in seaside Wonderland or to the shops of downtown Southwest Harbor."

Nice rental in a good location.

The house was plenty big for us and had everything we needed. It was very close to S. W. Harbor and it was close to many tourist spots. We enjoyed the village of S. W. Harbor, drives to Cadillac mountain, Bar Harbor and we explored many trails and rocky beach areas. Back Beach being one of the best. At the end of the day it was great to return and sit on the enclosed porch, our favorite space in the house. Sheila is very responsive and accommodating.

The house is everything we could have hoped for!

  • 5 of 5

I looked at many houses before choosing this one - definitely the right choice. It's comfortable and convenient. It's well equipped and has a great personality - very different from the generic houses or apartments that were bought just to be rented. This one is a home. We are very happy to be near Southwest Harbor instead of Bar Harbor. There's plenty of activity, but it's not as packed full with people. This is called the quiet side of the island. We've enjoyed lobster at Beal's, hikes, canoeing and a trip to Greater Cranberry Island where we were lucky to be there for the 115th ladies auxiliary fair. Sheila gets 5 stars too as the owner. She's very responsive. I wish we could meet in person.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Katherine! We love our house so much and would still be living there if I could stand the ice and snow. Check out Thurston's in Bernard. It's our favorite restaurant on the island. I hope you're enjoying our library. Many of the books are from OZ Books, the children's bookstore I owned for 15 years in Southwest Harbor. I'm so glad you're having a wonderful vacation! I'm guessing that we will meet someday.

Great space, perfect for any season

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed here a few times. Sheila is a great host. The house is very conveniently located on the island to get to Acadia (this house is *so* close to some of the great hikes and swimming areas in Acadia), Bar Harbor, and, even better than Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor. There's a fireplace (which we used when we stayed there in December of 2014--the island is *really* quiet and cozy at that time of year), a three season porch, an awesome front and back yard, and a stocked kitchen for cooking. My family and I have enjoyed renting this place out and will continue to in the future.

Sweet Island Home

  • 4 of 5

This Manset home is spacious yet cozy and simple and in a location that can not be topped for convenient access to all MDI has to offer...taking in the natural beauty, engaging in outdoor activities, becoming a part of coastal Maine village life. Every evening we took a walk down to the town dock, enjoying the stunning beauty of Southwest Harbor. The many personal touches in the house make it both comfortable and sweet. We loved the view from the dining room and kitchen where our family enjoyed easy vacation-style meals with goodies from Sawyers Market, Little Notch, and local farms.

one mile from downtown Southwest Harbor and in the other direction Seawall/Acadia National Park/Wonderland and Ship Harbor short hikes. Stroll down the path behind my house to the Cranberry Island dock; take a beautiful half-hour boat ride to Great Cranberry Island or Islesford on Little Cranberry Island, where there's much more to do. Take your bikes or sit on the dock and have lunch at the very good Docksider restaurant.

Take 20-minute drive to Bar Harbor -- the big city -- for a first-run movie at Reel Pizza. You'll have two choices of movies and many choices of yummy pizza. Really fun place!

IMPORTANT: Sheila Wilensky

I'm very unhappy with HOMEAWAY.COM. They have a monopolistic corner on the online rental market. Not getting my usually large number of inquiries for August 2016, I decided to check the website as a tourist instead of a homeowner.

I couldn't figure out why they were charging more than $,1700 for a weekly rental of my house (7097285) in August 2016; my weekly rental fee is $1,500, PERIOD.

It's impossible to reach them by phone or email; I wanted to make my case directly to them. Without having been told anything about it, I noticed that they added a service fee of $200-plus to my August weekly booking fee of $1,500.

The service fee is just wrong, and feels like a Bait and Switch situation.

If you read this and are interested in renting my house this August, please contact me directly at, 520-907-4128, or 380 N. Joesler Ct, Tucson, AZ 85716.
