Marylla - In between the Earth, the Sky and the Waters

Marylla calls to the artist and nature lover within you! This welcoming house is intimate, romantic, cozy and very well appointed. Garden with bird feeders and fragrant herbs. Rooftop deck to view the sun rising from the ocean and setting over the Sound. A perfect place in a perfect location!

Mar-ylla: Mar - for the Sea, Ylla-Illa-Isla - for the Island

Island of the Sea - - - A Sea Island

Marylla also happened to be an affectionate nickname my father used for my mother. I know that she would love to be here as much as we all do! Her spirit is very strong in this enchanted place of palatable energy.

Marylla is a gathering place for families, a place for inner searching and reflections, a place for becoming one with Nature. It's also a place of blending with the mists, and laughing with the gulls, dancing with dolphins, and watching baby turtles being born, then journeying to the sea.

Part of the Outer Banks barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, Hatteras Island stretches for 72 Miles, offering the most pristine, mostly undeveloped picturesque natural beaches, both on the Atlantic and on Pamlico Sound--comprising nearly 150 miles to explore! Most of the Island is a Protected National Seashore, the first in the country. Our village is nestled on the South most tip of the Island. What is extra special about this location are the south-facing beaches and the Gulf Stream -- bringing warm waters, fresh sea breezes, a wide assortment of migratory birds and fishes and a lovely temperate climate for your stay. From here you can also catch a free ferry to yet another jewel on the Outerbanks, Ocracoke Island.

Due to the Island's magnificent remoteness it seems you have to make an extra effort to get there, as there's no easy nor quick access. This makes it even more special, because once you arrive you can't help feeling like you're in a completely different, wonderful world. This is a place where time has a new dimension, people are kind and the sounds of nature penetrate your being. A fair warning though -- once you make it here, a piece of your heart will be left behind calling you to come back, again, again, and again...

Your playground, and activities are limitless! From being a bum on the beach, walking the many paths through the dunes and looking for treasures to catching the surf on a board or lifting off the water on a kite "Canadian Hole" near Avon is considered to be the windsurfing and kite-surfing capital of the east coast.

On the Sound side, kayak silently amid the marches and spy on wildlife. Feel like climbing? Try our iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest in the nation. Kick off your shoes and let the sand massage your feet. Be as casual as you wish, there is no pretense living on the Island. Read in the hammock, or bicycle to town to get the fresh catch of the day. Tuna is so sweet you'll only want to have it "a la sushi" Yes, you can ride horseback in the sea foam, or view the Island from a small plane's birdlike view. You can play golf or tennis, if you wish, or visit museums and expand your knowledge of a time before ours.

Greet each day with your morning coffee or tea on our roof top deck. Listen to the gossip of birds, the murmur of the sea, inhale the fresh salty breeze, ahhhhhhh!

Yes, all your stress and troubles seem very far away-- do they even exist?

That's what Marylla does for all of us. It is light and breezy, cheerful and non-pretentious. It is grounding, yet it lets you fly. We become better here, more loving and patient, grateful and humble, smiling often.

There is the smell of rosemary brushing against your feet every time you walk up the steps, lingering, inviting...don't be bashful about adding it to your favorite dishes. There is a Laurel tree in the back whose leaves like to be picked, becoming a part of us as well. Yes, there is a lot of satisfaction in using our fully stocked and well equipped kitchen! Let your creative side take over and you won't lack any tools!

The living space is open and airy; great for keeping us together. Whether it is playing games, working on some puzzles or watching favorite movies. You may just feel like submerging in your own activity and feel the presence of your loved ones nearby. Perhaps you'll prefer to step out to the screened porch, lie in a hammock and be rocked by the vibration of singing cicadas.

Feeling sleepy yet?

Each of our bedrooms has a ceiling fan, bamboo screens on the windows, and the same light and breezy feel, interspersed with the splashes of cheerful colors, as the rest of the house. Two of the bedrooms host Queen Size Beds. In the third you'll find a "Pyramid" bunk-bed, full on the bottom and twin on the top. We provide blankets and pillows along with new, comfortable mattresses.

There is a full bath adjacent to the Master Bedroom, and another in the hallway.

But wait! You don't want to go to bed yet! There is nothing like soaking your tired body in the Hot Tub, under a full canopy of bright stars! Relax! Let the Milky Way take you on the Journey!

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

  • 2 of 5

We rely quite a bit on reviews bc we like to think that people are honest and fair. That said, I'm afraid we were fooled this time by what we read and the pictures here on VRBO.

First, and most importantly, this house inside is clean but in order to be thorough in our review, we'll start at the driveway. You are crowded by the overgrown foliage between the two carport entries and the overgrowth heading into the house. There had/has been a LOT of rain lately and the carport and the yard does not drain well. So, we've had to walk through ~1-2" of water on the driveway or squish thru the muddy yard. All this rain and all the overgrowth is a great home for mosquitos. We would actually race from the front door, down the stairs and into the car. But, that can't be completely eliminated b/c the mosquitos are simply 'out' BUT, if the overgrown yard would be cut back, it would definitely help. Additionally, there is trash in the yard - it is not a 'serene' yard as described. Its over grown and there are dead bushes and weeds growing up around the stairs and even coming into the screen porch and the upper deck. (These were actually cut back after we called to complain a few days ago). Speaking of which, the pretty flags in the pictures, is now a string of tattered rags and looks terrible. The screened in porch has furniture in it but it's old and stained. Based on the overall state of the house and the mosquitos, we chose not to even open the hot tub.

Once you come in the house - after your fight the locks, b/c the door/lock alignment is just wrong, the furniture in the house is dated, used and stained. The master bed doesn't even have a headboard. The TV is a crap shoot. Its a ~24" in tube TV with a build in VHS - very antiquated. Its stalls frequently - not sure if it's the TV or the cable and don't look for many channels b/c there are only about 10 you can watch. There's another TV and about 4 or 5 other units and remotes in the master bedroom but we never turned them on as we would have no idea what does what.

The kitchen is well-equipped. There are plenty of utensils, pots/pans, dinner plates, cups, etc. The coffee machine works great - just bring ground coffee and filters. There is a washer and dryer that works fine and so does the dishwasher. Bathrooms - there are 2, and while both have a shower head, only 1 bathroom has a shower. Upper deck is great - furniture is very nice. If the wind was blowing we went up, otherwise the mosquitos ate us up!

Owner's Response: Dear Jamie, I will choose to believe that it is the lack of awareness rather than lack of empathy that dictates this review. You arrived to Marylla right after the hurricane Herminia passed through our village and caused much wind damage and extensive flooding. Most of your complaints are related to the consequences of the storm that the whole village had to face and deal with, and those that aren’t were tinted by your negative initial impression. Yes, there was flooding to the yard, some lost vegetation and things that were blown around. I’m really sorry that you had to experience this, but one thing we don’t have a control of is Mother Nature. We work hard to create and maintain an interesting landscaping around our property and balance it with natural habitat for the native wildlife. It took us several years to grow the climbing vines in front of the house and along the posts of the deck. Having the vegetation on the ocean side provides natural wind protection and allows for more privacy. I hope that your action of “clearing” it will not prove to be detrimental. To address the other issues that you have mentioned: The pretty flags in the pictures are called “Prayer flags” and they are meant to be tattered by the wind to carry the prayers far and wide. Porch furniture and the area rug were replaced this Spring. The whole house, including upholstery, carpet and bedding was professionally cleaned in the Spring. Windows cleaned and floors refinished as well. The house was completely booked for the season, hence it would be unrealistic to expect spotless condition at the end of it. We do guarantee it to be clean and well stocked. You did not like the old TV, which works great, plus, the simplicity of operating it makes us reluctant to replace it, and you did not like the brand new Roku TV, which was added in the Spring. We provide a basic cable and Internet service, as advertised. The hot tub is maintained and checked twice a week by “Happy Water” pool company. There are two full bathrooms with bath tubs and showers, plus an outdoor shower that everybody loves. If guests experience difficulty with operating any of the systems they are asked to contact the property management for help. Finally, mosquitoes - They were especially bad after the flooding, even though the village has a mosquito control program in place. However, should the property owners be blamed and held responsible for their presence? Wishing you the very Best! Renata

Marylla is just as advertised. Fantastic location. Easy access to beach. Near Marina. Nicely shaded to give relief from the sun which was really nice during the hot hours of the day. Layout nice. Very comfortable.

Hatteras Jewell!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Marylla on Hatteras Island couldn't have been any better! The "Cottage by the Sea" has an endearing soulfulness that immediately connects you to the magic of the island. Listening to the ocean's roar in the hot tub with a glass of wine after a day on the beach fishing is Paradise! And the surf fishing -- a small walk right over the dunes -- is excellent, even in the off-season. With the beach pretty much to ourselves I caught Puppy Drum, Sea Mullet, Blowtoads, Blue fish and even a Sheepshead on bait and lures.

Marylla is bright and clean and comfortable with a well-appointed kitchen and extra bedrooms (and bathrooms) for the visiting grown children -- who loved it as much as we do.

Plus there's location, location, location: Marylla is in a great neighborhood; Hatteras is a beautiful town and the (free) Ocracoke ferry is just a short drive away.

All in all Marylla is a wonderful place to stay on the Outer Banks. We'll be back soon!!!
