Crosswinds Beauty

My husband I had made arrangements to stay at the cottage the week of July 4th but my son in law had surgery as did I and we were both recuperating and couldn't enjoy that week. My daughter and her husband are our quasi caretakers and help us with any heavy lifting , etc. The Crosses made arrangements for us to stay another time but we could only manage 3 days during this summer. This was quite an accommodation and we thank them very much. The cottage was campy but very well equipped. The major attraction was the marvelous view of the spectacular sunsets viewable from a very cozy living room. We were surprised that the air conditioner was so very small and could not possible cool even the living area during a very hot few days. The crosswind window would not open but the fans did offer some relief. Everything was quite clean but we were dismayed that the refrigerator and freezer still had food and condiments in them. And we found huge unwrapped marshmallows in one of the bedroom dressers. A little more attention to these details and this cottage would be a perfect vacation spot for a larger family. We recommend it for an enjoyable time in the area.

I could not change the year we did not stay here this year But my family did rent the cottage for my parents 50th anniversary. The kitchen was nice and big for prepping food. The living area had lots of seating and a stunning west view. Master bedroom down and three bedrooms upstairs. Nice seating outsidea near the water. Everyone had a great time.

Crosswinds Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Several family members and I recently spent a very enjoyable weekend at Crosswinds Cottage at Sylvan Beach on the shores of Oneida Lake. We have been fortunate to be able to stay at Crosswinds for early-season walleye fishing weekends for approximately 7-8 consecutive years. We have found the Cottage to be comfortable, roomy, well-kept and well-appointed. We are particularly enamored with the wide-angle view of the lake from the cottage's large bank of living room windows. It is not unusual to observe ospreys, common terns, gulls, kingfishers and several additional species of waterfowl from the picture window. The windows also offer a a great perspective on changing weather conditions as well as sunrises and sunsets.

Crosswinds parking facilities are more than adequate, and a well-kept yard space provides an area for outdoor activities such as grilling, picnicking, enjoying the sunshine and admiring the lake scenery. Numerous restaurants, stores, marine services, beaches, parks and various recreational activities are located in Sylvan Beach, a short drive away.

My family members and I have never been disappointed with Crosswinds Cottage and related rental transactions. Over the years, we have built a solid relationship with Cottage owners Len and Bobby Cross, and they have dealt with us fairly, professionally, and in a timely manner. We would not hesitate to recommend Crosswinds Cottage for consideration as a place to stay at Oneida Lake!

Crosswinds owners: disingenuous & churlish- BEWARE

  • 1 of 5

I am a former innkeeper (over 12 yrs experience), so I know from whence I speak.

The owners of this property projected excessive proprietary concern from the initial contact & demonstrated their total lack of customer service acumen. I acted in good faith throughout the stay, and followed the their dictates to the letter.

Upon arrival, the owner ticked off dos & don'ts and had a dismissive & cagey attitude. Left alone, we found no toilet paper on property. I realize that we were responsible for all paper goods, but really, not one piece of toilet paper?

The TV never worked.

"Air conditioning" was one stated feature of the property, but in fact, there was a single, old & small unit on the first floor that never had a chance of cooling the house. We had chosen what could only be charitably called the hottest, muggiest week of July 2013. This was not the owners problem, but when I inquired about using other cooling units (provided by us), the owner scoffed at the notion & said that would not be allowed.

We somehow survived it all.

My sister & I spent most of the check-out morning cleaning & scrubbing. If the place was not left in better condition from first arrival, it was, at least, in the same condition as we found it. Spoke with owner on morning of check-out,& was told if we had acted in accordance with the contract, then it was fine to lock up & leave the house. She was running late.

The contract stated that the deposit would be returned within 45 days of check-out.

I waited 50 days after no word and sent an email. I received no reply. A week later I sent a second email & indicated that a sibling would gladly pick up the deposit & forward it to me. Six hours later I got a reply. I was informed that the deposit would be returned, less a fee for extra cleaning because the cottage was "left in such an abysmal state". They added that it had never been necessary "to withhold any portion of a deposit before mine". After all the time & effort my sister & I lavished on this project, I find this a tad incredible. Also, I wonder if any response (or the portion of my deposit, for that matter), would have ever been forthcoming had I not contacted the owners first as well as reminding them that I had several family members who lived nearby in central NY.

Sadly, I cannot in all conscience recommend this property to anyone, solely based on the owners tactless and underhanded behavior. I suspect they collect a "cleaning fee" from everyone's deposit. So beware.

Owner's Response: We care about our property and expect renters to follow the terms of the contract which they sign. In the contract we specify that the cottage is to be left in the same condition as it was when they arrive and also specify that the cottage is not to be used for large gatherings, parties, receptions etc. Upon arrival, this renter commented that there may not be sufficient parking and that he was pleased to see that we had plenty of lawn chairs. It sounded like he had plans for a party and we reminded him of the language in the contract regarding large gatherings. He assured us that they would not use the cottage to host a large gathering. At mid week I stopped to pick up the garbage and was astounded at the number of beer, wine and liquor bottles that I found. Clearly there had been a large party. At checkout we found the floors in terrible condition. My wife spent so much time on her hands and knees trying to clean and prepare the floors for the next renters that she was unable to get the rest of the cleaning done and had to apologize for needing more time. From the $250 security deposit, we deducted $75 for extra cleaning. Needless to say, these renters would not be welcomed back to Crosswinds. We have been renting Crosswinds for nine years and have received many compliments on the property and have several families that return year after year.

From the Owner

Some people want to be in the middle of all of the action. This would not be the cottage for them. At the end of a busy day in the village, at the amusement park or nearby at Turning Stone Resort, it is great to come back to the peace and quiet of this quiet getaway just a mile out of town.
