Continental Divide Cottage
Our stay at the Continental Divide Cottage was wonderful. The house was roomy, clean, updated, and nicely decorated. The deck overlooking the mountains is great. We spent many hours on the secluded deck. The property itself is over 3 acres, so if you like to hike in the woods, you do not need to leave the property. If you want privacy and close proximity to many golf courses, this is a great place. We hope to return in the Fall.
Perfect vacation cottage!
Beautiful home with gorgeous mountain views! We stayed for 4 nights at this lovely location and enjoyed every second. The home was well stocked and there were plenty of supplies to use in the kitchen. We arrived to a bottle of wine, drinks in the fridge, and board games are available for entertainment. They provided us with a welcome folder that included directions to nearby stores and very useful information that proved to be incredibly helpful. Only one small issue came up with the central heat not working one night, but the owners immediately fixed the problem after being notified. We definitely recommend this location to any looking to relax, explore, or just simply getaway. We look forward to coming back!
We arrived Christmas Eve to a house they had decorated with a real tree, garland all along the front porch and wreaths on the doors! Then we walked in to find a Christmas card, wine, and a bowl of real fruit.
The cottage is very clean, comfortable and lots of amenities. There is a gas fireplace, BBQ grill, separate heaters in each of the bathrooms, plenty of towels and linens, and most everything you will need to cook your own meals, just stop at the nearby Ingles and bring your food.
The views are amazing from the large back private deck with Grandfather Mountain as the featured focal point, and the front porch offers long range views overlooking the tree farm along the long gravel driveway.
The owners David and Virginia were amazing! They answered any questions I had at any point since I booked this cottage 6 months prior to while we were there. They have gone the extra mile to make this a great place to stay for anyone wanting privacy, family gatherings, romantic getaways, or just to unwind. There were even 8 or so deer that came to visit when I was drinking my coffee on the back porch.
We have stayed in many different places over the past few years and this rates right up at the top!
Nearby is Banner elk with a good winery, Snow tubing at Hawksnest, easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway where we hiked at Rough Ridge to experience what seemed to be an endless mountains, even Blowing Rock and Boone are short drives too.
Definitely call and book this cottage! In my opinion, you will not be disappointed!

Absolutely beautiful property! Spent a glorious 5 nights and wanted more. We would most certainly go back again and have recommended it to our friends. So well appointed; every detail has been anticipated from needed spices in the cabinet to the cappuccino maker on the shelf.
The cabin is in excellent condition! Very clean, has all the modern amenities, great location for hiking (waterfalls), or shopping (Banner Elk), and has a large, inviting, back porch. Beautiful area that is great for those looking to get away for a quite weekend!
A Fabulous Stay!
We had a fabulous stay at the Continental Divide Cottage! The leaf color was at its peak, and the views of the mountains, surrounding woods and the tree farm were simply beautiful. The cottage was lovely, tastefully furnished and easy to access from the main road. We had everything we needed...the beds were comfortable with plush linens, and we loved sitting out among the trees on the big deck off of the kitchen and master bedroom. We enjoyed relaxing in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine after a day of sight-seeing and gallery hopping in Boone. Loved how close we were to Grandfather Mountain, and took a short hike on the AT. The kids enjoyed fishing at the lake and tennis at Linville Land Harbor. I'll bring my golf clubs along next time...thanks for making the resort available to us! We will recommend your cottage to all of our friends and hope to return!
Activity and Interests
Avery County, created in 1911, is nestled in the majesty of the Appalachian Mountains, the oldest mountain chain in the world! Avery County also has the highest elevation of any county seat located east of the Rocky Mountains, reaching 5500 feet above sea level. Newland, the County Seat, is 3621 feet above sea level, making it the highest county seat in the Eastern US.
Recreational opportunities abound in Avery County, with numerous lakes, rivers and waterfalls, all testaments to the beauty and splendor of nature. Approximately half the county lies within the Pisgah National Forest, making it ideally suited for hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. We are the home of Grandfather Mountainand the “Mile-high Swinging Bridge.” If sports are more to your liking, there are several golf courses for your warm weather enjoyment, and Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain ski resorts for cold weather fun.
The Town of Banner Elk and its surrounding areas offer a quality of life that is sought by many folks today; a beautiful mountain retreat away from the busy crowds where one can still have access to the finer conveniences found in larger metropolitan areas. This beautiful Avery County setting is surrounded by some of the highest mountains east of the Rockies including Grandfather Mountain and Beech Mountain. The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses the county just six miles from town. Banner Elk is home to Lees McRae College and features a lively arts and crafts cultural scene, complete with an intimate pedestrian shopping district of upscale boutiques and outstanding restaurants, several of which are regularly featured in national travel and food magazines.
This area offers a wonderful year-round climate, with four distinct seasons. Spring blossoms beautifully with rhododendron and mountain laurel. Summer features sunny days for outdoor activities and cool evenings for relaxation. Fall bursts forth in a palette of brilliant colors while Winter provides skiing and cozy nights by the fireside. The higher elevations of this region make for cooler summer temperatures. In fact, Avery County’s seat, the Town of Newland, and neighboring Beech Mountain are the highest county seat and incorporated town, respectively, in the eastern United States. Don’t be fooled by other mountain towns that claim cool summers but have lower elevations. If you are looking for cooler summer temperatures, you can’t do any better than the High Country.
The Town of Boone is a university town in Watauga County, atop the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and serves as the county seat and market town. Boone acquires its name from the famous pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, who on several occasions camped at a site generally agreed to be within the present city limits.
The town was incorporated in 1872 and its current population is 17,751. Boone has the highest elevation (3,300 feet) of any town of its size (over 10,000 population) east of the Mississippi River. During summer, high temperatures in Boone are typically 76°F or below, noticeably cooler than the lowland areas to the east and south. Summers are also considerably cooler than most parts of the Carolinas. Winters are colder with sleet and snowfall common.
Located off the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone offers its residents and visitors a four-season playground for sports and outdoor activities. Boone is recognized by travel journalists as an "ultimate outdoor adventure destination" in the Southeast.
