Residing in the most "private" non-private beach neighborhood in Siesta Key, The Old Man and the Sea Inn can accommodate up to 24 guests and is a four unit Key West-style home located just one marlin's length (5 steps) from yard to the sand path of southern Crescent Beach. Southern Crescent Beach forms a cove that boasts the calmest/clearest water on the island and was rated "The World's Finest, Whitest Sand" at the Great International Sand Challenge. It also has a limestone reef to the south which is popular with colorful marine life and is listed in most top things "to do" lists for Sarasota County. The upstairs and downstairs patios of our home were designed for tropical living and taking full advantage of sea breezes. After a day of snorkeling, fishing or just lazing in the warm gulf waters, you can rejuvenate on your westerly facing balconies, in the downstairs indoor/outdoor dining and lounging area, or just swing yourself to sleep in our hammocks. The Old Man and the Sea Inn is generously decorated and our furnishings, towels and linens are less than 12 months old. Every bedroom has lush high thread-count 100% cotton sheets and abundant pillows. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen, there is a gas grill downstairs, and you can find fresh fish at the Village Market or catch your own at the beach nearby.

*Events or gatherings involving outside vendors or a headcount in excess of the combined occupancy rate are allowed with prior owner approval. A Location Event Fee of $2000 applies. A Guest based Event Fee of $23 per guest in excess of the maximum occupancy applies. Events can only be scheduled by reserving every unit on the given location. A parent or guardian must accompany guests under the age of 21. The Old Man and the Sea Inn is an "unstaffed inn" with no check in or check out process required.

About Daniel Jones

Gertrude Rentals was named for the owner-operator’s (Daniel) grandmother. Gertrude Van-Lopik was an adventurous traveler well into her 90s who circumnavigating the globe more than two dozen times. Gertrude Rentals is a multi-generational, family business and includes a wife, a husband, a daughter, and a lifetime friend. With 48 beds we are also the largest owner operator of premier vacation rentals on Siesta Key and have more than 100 positive reviews “and growing” (we are very proud of them).

Daniel Jones is the head honcho of Siesta Key and the owner-operator of Gertrude Rentals, his third of four children. Dan was born in Sarasota and lived on Siesta Key for 25 years before leaving to work in New York City. In 2010 Dan came to his senses and abandoned a career in finance to spend more time with his friends and family and, ultimately, to pursue this labor of love. He is passionate about providing affordable beach-luxury during what he calls “sacred vacation time”. He loves surfing, interior design, and seafood. Dan's departure from Wall Street and return to the beaches of Siesta Key represents the hallmark spirit of Gertrude Rentals - no collars, no shoes, no problems!

A Perfect Family Getaway!

Coming from the land-locked Midwest, we were thrilled to stay here for our kids' first experience at the beach! Beautiful sand just 8 steps from the property, sand toys, beach chairs, beach towels, body boards, beach umbrella and more for us to use- and lots of shells to collect! We grilled and enjoyed the community outdoor space, laundry was on site, and an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand before heading in. Check-in and check-out was a breeze too! Definitely a trip to remember!

A nice stay for us

It was relaxing. easy beach access , parking good, close to stores. Beach chairs and toys on sight to use. Grill area, just make sure grill is working and there's enough propane.

Property is awesome and truly a short walk to the beach and point of rocks. Daniel was a delight to work with and very good on communications and very responsive! Only note is washer and dryer is shared with all units, not in the unit itself

Comfy and Cozy

This property is located in a less busy part of Siesta Key. While restaurants are nearby, Old Man and the Sea is on the other end of SK from the village area which gives a calmer, more restful feeling to the property. There is a short walk down the path to the beach (very short walk) where you can enjoy the sun during the day or watch the sunset at night. There are only four units so the property is quiet. Definitely a great place to stay!

Okay but shabby

Pros: very close to the beach and check in/out very easy, beach chairs and toys available

Cons: all furniture had stains, carpet was dirty, needed paint and cleaned, towels were threadbare, shower barely dribbled and very thin walls where you could hear neighbors conversations word for word. For the money spent you would expect something nicer and more up to date.

Owner's Response: Im sorry this guest didn't enjoy the unit as much as they enjoyed the property and location. We consider it our business to deliver amazing stays and this particular unit has dozens of 5 star reviews on this site alone (hundreds on other sites combined) so most travelers love it. Regarding marks on the walls, possible at any desirable destination because repainting requires a 4 day gap in the rental calendar, and this particular unit gets booked all Spring:) Regarding noise from the other units, unlikely but renting an entire house is a way to avoid neighbors. We would have gladly replaced the screen or shower head in the bath "immediately" but the guest didn't mention any issue. We hope you will read other reviews, we are very proud of them.
