Super location and value. Will be back in the fall

  • 5 of 5

loved the place. Had all the things we needed and the owner was very cordial. Pontoon did not start one morning but the boat guy came right away and it started right up. He even put on a new propane tank on the grill on the patio. Can't wait to get back this fall.

Fun property. Keep coming back every year. A MUST STAY for price and location

  • 5 of 5

Have rented the Hideaway every year since 2011. We have never written a review on a property but Mike emailed to ask us to give a candid current review on our stay last week. First, the property is not a Hilton but it does fit every need we have every year as far as 3 bedrooms, a great waterfront location as well as every amentity anyone would want. It has a firepit out by the water, a swing, a nice grill and big picnic table and a hammock which one of us always slleeps in at night. Regarding the inside, it has 3 tv's and central air alonf with all the linnens and kitchen items we need. and it has washer/dryer. Since we are outside or are on the pontoon, we are not the crazy types that are nitpicky or have nothing to do but go over things with a fin tooth comb. If it were ours (I wish we could afford it), we would do a few cosmetic things and fiz a few things, but we don't have any issues that are worth mentioning since it is several hundred dollars less than most anything else on the Indian Islands. A great place to enjoy, and we have reserved next year as did the guests we met that were leaving as we arrived.

Not What Was Advertised

  • 1 of 5

A previous reviewer is absolutely correct...the photos of this property are very deceiving. The rental is advertised as ‘over 200 ft. of WATERFRONT’...not quite. From the photo used in Mr. Heller’s or is it Kern’s listing (according to others in the neighborhood, he uses many aliases), you might envision beautiful sunsets over open water. NOT!! Your view is of houses and the back ends of boats parked across a 30-40 ft channel; you can peek at the lake if you look between houses. “New and improved upgrades”? There was a fairly new TV, but beyond that, this is what we found: holes in the floor covered by filthy, stained carpets; exposed kitchen plumbing and wiring running across the floor; plumbing back-up problems in both kitchen and bath; rusty, stinking water (no water softener or filtering system); broken furniture inside and out; closets and shelves crammed so full of ‘stuff’ they were unusable; curtains hung with such flimsy hardware, they would not stay up; electrical and telephone wires hanging out through wall holes with no wall plates; multiple missing window screens; broken dead bolt on the ONLY in/out door (a fire hazard??); non-functional smoke detectors throughout; and all the air fresheners in the world (and there were many in all rooms) can’t disguise the rank, damp, odor that permeates the house. Nowhere to store groceries, we used a board across two stools and the floor. The pontoon boat was basic and usable, but dirty with nasty stagnate mildew water under all the seats and filled with ants we could never get rid of.

We read the reviews listing many of these problems, but chose to believe Mr. Heller/Kern’s rebuttal, that this was a disgruntled renters. Left the owner with a problem list consisting of 24 individual deficient items, and have documentation, including photos.

Mr Heller/Kern’s may call his cottage cozy and nostalgic but it is hands down the shabbiest rental property in the neighborhood, maybe even on the lake. And we can say that with some certainty as we lived at a “true” waterfront house at this lake for over 20 years.

Should we return to Indian Lake, we will do our homework a little more carefully, and we hope others potential renter

Owner's Response: It is our goal to make all guests happy and have an enjoyable experience. We did not even look at our reviews akk year because most all guests left nice letters and/or nice emails...and over 40% have reserved the Hideaway again for next year. This review is baffling as I personally spoke with this guest when I delivered an over supply of water bottles (we supply for guests that do not like well water) and asked if everything was ok and whether they needed anything at all.....to which all was fine. It was not until they were leaving early that all of the sudden the property...which the other 17 guests this season were happy with....was not acceptable unless we would give them some money back. We have a cleaning person as well as a maintenance right there on the island. We could have called either or both if we would have known of an issue. We have been renting the property for 10 years and have hundreds of repeat guests. I will be more than happy to speak personally with any future guests about any concerns at all, and would be happy to send a current video walkthrough of the property...and also have any present gusts text/email pics of anything suggested as inferior or sub-standard. I will also give you the phone of any guest who may be staying at the Hideaway so that you can talk to them and ask how they are enjoying their stay if needed. As you can imagine, we cannot control reviews...but with several hundred guests and repeat guests and referred guests, we tak exception to the 2-3 guests that make ous have to respond to this nonsense. Again, call to discuss before rendering an opinion based on any negative review.

nice cabin and pontoon, just what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

I have been to the Hideaway on more than one occasion this year. Property is always very nice. Spend a lot of the time outside near the water and enjoy the hammock as well as all the chairs to fish at the seawall. The pontoon was very nice and is a must to enjoy the lake. Have recommended the property to several friends. Several have been there and have schedule to go back in the spring.

Cozy, Peaceful, Clean, Perfect !

  • 5 of 5

Have stayed here twice this year. Love the cottage layout and coziness...and obviously the pontoon out the front door so we don/t have to go through the hassle and logistics of renting one. The yard and fall mums and fall pumpkins were a neat added touch, and we spent two nights in front of the fire at the waters edge at the firepit. For those of you expecting a brand new boring vanilla box sterile cottage...well this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a quaint cottage with a couple little quirks that is a great location and price, this is the best by far at the lake. We never have enough time to nit pick because we are busy having fun, and the place is just fine for us every single time.

The gas grill did not work until the maintenance man brought a warranty part two days into our stay, and the outside of the one side of the house needed broomed off from the wind blowing fuzzy things and leaves but that is to be expected and was no big deal since spent most of the time on the water or inside watching tv or on the internet. The inside was just fine as was the last time we stayed, however it does only have one full bath which is no big deal as we only had two couples.

Looking forward to another stay next spring if available...hint hint !!!!

Gross

  • 1 of 5

Worst place on the street. Horrible on outside covered in bugs and falling apart. Filthy windows ! Back porch filled with garbage. Holes in walls exposed wiring no broiler and grill did not work. Pontoon was filthy too I guess since he thru in the pontoon he didn't have to clean all the bugs and dirt off it. Couldn't even sleep there after first night. I cleaned for 3 hours and was so grossed out. Pics are very deceiving !! Not a very safe place to stay. Extension cords across floors and hanging from ceiling. Owner called it nostalgia. I call it crap

Owner's Response: Same guest who gave "horrible" review. I personally was there and walked the guest through every room and around the property..and she said it was fine. She also looked at/inside the boat and was ok with that as well. Additionally, the maintenance man was there and we both told the guests that he would be happy to stop back if anything at all was needed since he lives around the corner. The maintenance man was called the 4th day regarding the new stainless steel grill having issues (since repaired under warranty...those things happen), but was not asked to perform any cleaning or anything. AT NO TIME WAS I CONTACTED AT ALL UNTIL GUESTS WERE LEAVING...PERIOD. a)Regarding electric, the property has 2 newer circuit breaker panels. Yes it does have extension cords for additional outlets. b) She never indicated during walkthrough that it was unclean, and never asked the maintenance man to come back to clean anything. c) The back screened in area is off-limits to guests as we do store various things for other renatals.d) I have no idea if guests stayed there or stayed with friends. e)enough said. Guests all summer long have had no problems with the property, and the guests currently there are using the same nice boat and gave us the "thumbs up" regarding the property. It is not brand new, and yes there are little things that always can be fixed....but we charge much less than others on the Indian Islands. We are about 80% repeat guests who enjoy the place year after year. Soon I will ask them to write reviews to show that the property is cozy and definately not "gross" or "horrible". Please feel free to call and discuss if you have any concerns at all. thx, Mike
