About Jim Claxton

My uncle JB purchased this property in the mid 1960s and it has been our family cabin ever since. We have enjoyed numerous family meals, time on the water, card games, and of course, great camp fires. The original cabin was an old Army Quonset hut. We rebuilt the cabin in the mid 80s to have a more open space.

I live in Southeast Michigan now, but spend as much time as I can up north at this special place.

Why Jim Claxton chose Upper Peninsula Michigan

Monocle Lake is about 150 acres in size. It is stocked for walleye, bass, pike, and perch. There is a public boat launch site if you wish to bring your personal water craft. The lake is great for boats up to about 22'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jim; I'm sorry I didn't write a review earlier. Had a great stay.

Fishing wasn't great, but other than that it was super week. We all got sun burn. Hope to come back next year. Both daughters were with us. It may be the last time we spend a vacation together for many years. Lake was great for swimming. We totally enjoyed Caroline. What a great person. Thanks much. Peter, Heather, Cait and Dani

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the cabin and it was just as nice as I remembered it. There is nothing better than sitting on the porch drinking coffee in the morning and just staring at the scenery. It's not too far from town, but feels secluded. This trip we went to see the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore, Grand Marais, and spent several days in the Soo. The cabin is central enough to make visiting different places convenient. It's just a lovely place to visit.

Private, but convenient to local attractions

  • 5 of 5

This is the quintessential family cabin on the lake. Unpretentious, but with everything you need to relax. We loved the privacy and gorgeous view, but also found it conveniently located to the waterfalls, Picturedrocks and Sault Saint Marie. Don't miss Pickles, a Brimley restaurant where you can sit on the deck with a beautiful view of the bay.

Jim, the owner, was very helpful in getting us booked and next door neighbor, Caroline gave us a great introduction to the area. She is a gem.

Beautiful, relaxing environment.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! My husband and I were on a cycling/ relaxing vacation. The rental was more than comfortable. We spent time canoeing on Monacle Lake. How beautiful! Also spent lots of time cycling in the immediate area. The roads and traffic conditions were wonderful. A couple of days were devoted to tourism events. We spent 2 days doing the tourism things. One day at the Shipwreck Museum (awesome) and the falls (incredible). Another day was devoted to St. Saint Marie and the locks, and travelling into Canada, up Route 17. The scenery after about 15 miles into Canada is not to be believed! Bring your passports!

Have to mention a wonderful evening with the caretaker, Carolyne, on her deck! What an amazing, colorful lady!

We are looking forward to a return visit!

This was a wonderful cabin with great views and easy access to Monocle Lake and Lake Superior

  • 5 of 5

Jim and Caroline were exellent hosts. The cabin was clean and well furnished; we had access to a paddle boat and a canoe that made our stay even more pleasurable. We were able to check out the Shipwreck museum, Picture Rocks and Tequamanom Falls. All were reasonably close. I do recommend checking out the stars at night on the dock. We will definitely be going back.

Awesome getaway

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed a week at the cabin. The weather was awesome and the lake was perfect for swimming, its a lil rocky in spots so you may want to bring some water shoes. We fished the lake on our pontoon a few days before we realized the best fishing was right in front of the cabin! We caught small mouth bass, rock bass, walleye and pike right off the dock!! A must see .... tahquemenon falls (has a great brewery) the Iroquois lighthouse and Lake Superior is always an awesome sight. There is no washer/dryer at the cabin but I did see them at the casinos campground.

We had an amazing time. It was nice to just hangout at the cabin and enjoy the lake. There's not a lot of houses so during the week it feels like your own private lake! Jim and Caroline were awesome and very hospitable so don't hesitate to ask them for anything. Would definitely stay again :)
