This beautiful Mediteranean duplex was built in 1925, and is about 4,000sf. The huge livingroom is decorated with African artifacts and has 3 sleep sofas. The separate dining room has eleven chairs, and is decorated with items from Latin and South America. One bedroom has a king size bed, the second has 2 full sized beds, and the third has 2 twin beds. I live in a cottage at the rear of the rental.
I retired from the federal government in Washington, D.C., where I worked as a librarian. I moved to Florida in 2004, and I'm very happy to be here!
Gwendolyn S Fields purchased this house in 1998
It was built in 1925, and has a very unique Mediterranean architectural style.
This was one of the more unique places we have stayed. We called it 5 nights at the Museum. Gwen has artifacts from many of her travels decorating the house. Fun, but this would not be a kid friendly place as I would be too worried about an accident breaking something. Gwen knew a little about the history of this house but I would have enjoyed even more. This is not a new house and does not have updates, but was very clean. The outside garden area could be great but seems to have gotten away from Gwen. But Gwen quickly cleaned off the outside table so we could eat outside. As mentioned in other reviews, to access all the bathrooms you must go through a bedroom. One review was unsure of the neighborhood. We were unsure at first but in the end felt the neighborhood was fine. In question would be the neighborhoods between Lake Maggiore and downtown St. Pete. We wanted to be close to downtown St. Pete and this was a great location. 5 - 8 min drive.
We needed a place that would accommodate 9 including family and members of bridal party. House had good reviews and was close to the venue. Was immediately greeted by owner, Gwen, who lives in a cottage behind the house. Common rooms were spacious and were awesome for a bridal shower with 20 guests. Bedrooms are small but very adequate. The entire place was very clean. Other reviewers have commented of a slightly musty odor - please, you have to remember that this is a 90 year old house IN FLORIDA, folks - think of humidity!!! Had a problem when we arrived with connecting to WiFi - told Gwen and it was fixed IMMEDIATELY. She was vigilant and caring - calling twice when we had left the car door open. If you are looking for Beverly Hills or the Ritz - go elsewhere. If you are looking for a homey atmosphere, with amazing and interesting decor and a wonderful homeowner, then choose this. The only downside is that the three bathrooms are within the three bedrooms, so the shower guests had to use a private bath (just meant I had to make the bed, LOL) Having everyone together for the wedding week really made the event even more meaningful and we thank Gwen for being gracious and accommodating.
For a house that can sleep 12--the price was right!! Gwen was easy to get in contact with and promptly responded to inquiries.
Warning-the house is not in the greatest area - but if you're renting a house this size-there are probably tons of you traveling!
The "rules" seem a bit much but it's not a hotel and there isn't a maid - so don't leave dishes etc.
The shower in the King room had no lights and it was dark green tile-so unless you wanna shower in the dark-don't shower at night.
There isn't a bathroom that's not in a bedroom so while it's great that there are 3 pullout couches-those people have to go through someone else's room.
Loved that there was plenty of seating for everyone to eat dinner together.
Our party of four enjoyed the space in this house. It was great that each bedroom had its own bathroom. We were visiting St. Pete for baseball games at Tropicana Field and it was a handy location to the ballpark. Also convenient to the city center and beaches. When the wifi did not work, Gwen got it fixed right away. Check in and check out were made easy!
Gwen was a great host and the house was perfect for our needs. The house has a ton of character and everyone staying there loved it.
