About David Sperling
I am an immigration lawyer from Long Island. My wife and kids fell in love with the property and the gorgeous surroundings when we first came 5 years ago as renters. We came back every year since and jumped at the chance to own the property, which includes 3 cottages that we have renovated.
David Sperling purchased this Cottage in 2017
What makes this Cottage unique
The word most guests use is "paradise." Bantam Lake is the largest fresh-water lake in CT and will remain undeveloped because a land trust. The area boasts a 400-acre wildlife preserve with 35 miles of trails within walking distance of the cottage. The dock and 100-foot shoreline are perfect for young children learning to swim. Sports activities include kayaking (on premises), biking, boating, hiking and water-skiing.

Great Location for Get Togethers
We had our wedding at South Farms and were in search of a property (or properties) to accommodate us and our wedding party for the weekend. When we happened upon David's 3 properties, it was almost too good to be true. We rented all three because of their convenient location to each other and their proximity to South Farms,
which was about a 7 minute drive from the properties. It definitely made it easier to not lose certain wandering groomsmen!
It is a little bit difficult to locate the driveway to the properties. Just make sure to look for the Camp David sign above the hedges! There were a number of our guests that missed it the first time. Larger or more vibrant signage may have helped a bit. Also, note that parking can accommodate about 6 cars, so plan accordingly. And, don't be concerned by the first house you see upon arrival. This is not one of the houses for rent!
Once you walk beyond the second set of hedges, the lake view was great! The fire pit was a perfect meet up spot for everyone at the end of day. If you are planning to have a fire for more than a couple of hours, just make sure to bring extra wood. The available kayaks and floating dock provided for hours of entertainment.
The owner, David, is very eager to answer any questions you may have and is very hands-on with his properties. He will meet up with you to assist with check-in and show you around. However, it would be great if check-in / check-out / lock-up procedures were published online and in the welcome information packet because when things got a little hectic with the rehearsal and wedding prep, it would have been nice to have an easy reference to know what to do instead of having to get in contact with David.
Also, just to note, there are a number of security cameras setup on the corners of every house. It made some people a little uncomfortable and was worth noting.
Overall, a very good experience on a beautiful lakefront property. It made it very simple to have a centralized location for the day of pre-wedding prep (hair, makeup, getting ready). And, once the wedding was over, we had a day of peace and quiet to fully enjoy the lake.
Hi Karleen, thanks for your excellent review and useful suggestions. You were the first wedding party that we hosted, and I'm happy that it worked out so well!
3cottage bantam lake
we were 14 family members -babies, children and adults--initially 2 families stayed in the middle cottage and the rest in the last cottage(furthest from the lake)--accomodations were quite adequate for all of us. enough bedrooms and beds for sleeping, enough space on the porch(last cottage) for all of us to have meals together. the cottage closest to the water(where the owner and his family stayed) has a common area underneath that has a bathroom, washer/dryer, ping pong table, art supplies and table and a table and chairs on an outside porch that could be used to have some meals if u were down by the water. There are plenty of chairs and seating by the water for all to sit and relax. There are 3 kayaks, plenty of inflatable rafts and plenty of life jackets(all sizes). Two access sites down to the water and the dock is a great size, has a bench on it and is great for getting into the water. there is also a raft a few feet away from the dock to swim to or just relax on. The kitchens are adequately stocked. There are great farm markets nearby and within walking distance is NorthShore Fish restaurant for outside dining(order early, pick up and bring home or get your reservation in-otherwise a long wait). Great bread store, ice cream shop, markets are all close by. David is very available by phone if he is not on the premises and his stepson Richie is very amiable and helpful. We had use of a boat for a few hours a day for water skiing and tubing and he would pull right up to the dock to load us all in for sunset cruises(which were spectacular). My family enjoyed every minute of their stay. Thanks David and hope to rent again some time in the future.
Our Family Getaway
Myself and my family had a great time here. David and his family were very available and helpful!
Let me start by saying Ive made a few reviews in my life. This house and experience was terrific. We couldn’t have had a better time. The amenities and location were better than we could have imagined. It’s definitely a great spot for families. Even multiple families. Sleeps 14.
David was a wonderful host. It’s our first time to this area but we will definitely be back!!!
We were quite fortunate to have Vince and his family and friends as our very first guests! The kids loved the water slide, floats and kayaks, while their dads were fishing along the dock. Great fun family — we hope to see them again very soon.
