Country Cottage On Private, Serene Three Acres Of Land
About Rose Merrill
I'm a singer/songwriter loving life in the mountains so I can take care of my animals, garden and work on my music. I've been coming to this property since I was a little girl, and never dreamed I'd be lucky enough to be living here with my husband, Jeff.
Rose Merrill purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Rose Merrill chose Carmel Valley
I love the peacefulness of the property, and the weather is very pleasant. We don't get the fog, or the wind. Maybe a slight breeze, or early fog that will lift by mid-morning.
What makes this Cottage unique
I love all the buildings on this property, which were built in the 40's and have a certain charm from that era. You get the feeling of "days gone by". Nourish yourself in nature.

Hidden Treasure up in the Mountains of Carmel Valley
My daughter, Christa and I loved it! If you are looking to get away from all the noise of the city, and it's hustle & bustle, then this is perfect for you. It's a charming country retreat, (high in the mountains), which includes chickens, doves, and a country garden. The river/lake is walking distance from their farm. Rose and her husband live on sight; the check in was a warm "Hello, welcome." Everything was ready for us. They said, "Let them know if we needed anything," and they really meant it. Otherwise, they just allowed us to enjoy their property. Christa and I stayed at the Dove's cottage, right behind their main house. The Dove cottage comes with a private backyard with lounge chairs, and a table with an umbrella. The French doors from the bedroom open up to the patio. The morning was lovely to sit and just be surrounded by nature; and hear the soft sounds of birds chirping, and flying overhead.Their farm was so peaceful...the tall trees, flowers, vineyard, and walking path create a writer's dream for creativity and relaxation. Their pictures of their farm (posted on VRBO) is what you'll see when you arrive. It was lovely. They are a very nice couple and made us feel at home. Rose sent me instructions before the trip: "Bring layered clothes and go grocery shopping before coming up." Which we did. She also sent me written directions in case our GPS lost its signal. We were fortunate that our GPS worked the entire trip. I had read some of the reviews before I booked with them. One had said to bring ear plugs, because the rooster does crow in the morning. So, we were ready. They do not have a television; but do offer free wifi, (which worked very well.) My daughter was able to see her programs on her iPad. We look forward to going back next year. Thank you.
We had a lovely stay at Rose's homestead. Beautiful area to walk around and it was nice to see a different view of the area around Monterey. Very fun to see the chickens and the doves. The roosters are up and crowing at 5:45am. We're an early rising family so this didn't bother us but if you're looking to sleep in, I imagine that would make it tough. It was quite warm in the cottage most of the day but it was lovely at night. The cottage itself is small and cozy and has some quirkiness to it but Rose has decorated it with lots of antique touches that make it feel homey. She's clearly put a lot of thought into presenting the cottage in its best light even though it doesn't have size on its side. I would recommend adding some ceiling fans as that would've helped a lot to keep the air moving. Overall, a nice play to stay for a weekend away.
Great place to totally get away.
Millions of stars at night.White doves cooing. Farm fresh eggs and lettuce.Rose and Jeff the owners are cool.
I cannot wait to return. It is the perfect get-a-way. Rose's place is so charming. Rose is so kind. The property is so inviting. It has everything you need and more. I wanted to move in.
Rustic Carmel Valley Cottage
This cute little cottage is on the grounds of a few other cottages including what appears to be the owner's cottage. There is a farm-like atmosphere and a creek running beside the property. There are chickens just adjacent to our cottage and they crowed at dawn daily, so earplugs were necessary if you wished to sleep past 5:45 AM! Communication with the owner was good prior to our arrival and Rose helped us choose just the right cottage for the 4 of us. We would have liked to have met her if she was there but we were not sure that she was. The amenities are very basic but overall comfortable, clean, and functional. Wifi worked very well. There were 2 exceptions to the otherwise good accommodations: the hide-a-bed was not very comfortable but I heard that the actual bed in the bedroom was very comfortable,! The second is that during the heat of the day, we could open windows which had intact screens but screen doors left wide gaps for mosquitoes so we could not use those for ventilation. During the day it was hot, but at night and in mornings, it was quite pleasant and we actually had to close the windows one night because of the cold! Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Dove Cottage. The grounds were peaceful with foliage all around, and it seems the landscaping and choice of plants lend themselves to attracting honeybees, which were plentiful and great to see!
Yes, the rooster crows at the break of dawn, (welcome to the country). He is claiming his territory and protecting his hens, which in turn lay beautiful eggs for us to enjoy.
I am usually working around the property, and usually greet guests, unless they'd rather self check. I was there to greet you, however, the first car that arrived was another member of your family. You can always text me, or walk around the property, or just knock on my door :)
Sofa/sleepers are usually fine for children. I was hoping that you'd rent both cottages, then everyone could have slept on a very comfortable bed. However you chose to just rent the one cottage.
The front door has a screen that has a latch on the inside to make it close tight. The door in the kitchen area is usually not opened. On a warm day, if you close the windows and doors, it stays cooler in the cottage. Then you open the windows in the evening to let the cool air inside. And, of course turn on the fan. This is country living, very simple, easy, but not for all.
Nice and quiet
Quaint cottage, hospitable hosts, perfect location for shuttles to US Open at Pebble Beach! We hope to be able to stay there again at the next US Open.
