About Julie Gaskill & Dick Carter
We are midwesterners who moved to Seattle after living in France for seven years. We crisscrossed the country, and chose Seattle over every other place we visited. It's a wonderful city full of bookstores, theaters, coffeehouses, great restaurants, friendly people and imagination. This is a beautiful city that is seriously into food and the outdoors. Ask us about the many bakeries, pubs and and restaurants that are just a few minutes' drive (or 10-20 minutes' walk) away, and the many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Julie Gaskill & Dick Carter purchased this Cottage in 2002
Why Julie Gaskill & Dick Carter chose Wedgwood
We chose NE Seattle because despite its proximity to downtown (6 miles), it is full of older-growth trees and wildlife. We've seen great blue herons and bald eagles on our street. We're only 4 minutes' walk from the direct bus to U. of Washington and downtown, and a mile from the express lanes on I-5 South. We walk our mini-poodle Louie through our beautiful Wedgwood neighborhood almost every day.
What makes this Cottage unique
The Garden Studio is a separate, private building in a beautifully planted, fully fenced yard. Both the Garden and Studio are designed for optimal light, with skylights, multiple windows with transoms, blinds that open from top or bottom, French doors, and lamps that are almost all dimmable. The Garden Studio features a new, quiet heating and air-conditioning unit, screened windows that can let in a breeze, multiple patios to relax, glide or swing in a hammock, and a fully equipped cook's kitchen. We are 4-5 minutes' walk from the 372 and 312 bus, and a 10-minute walk to the 522. You can drive, take Shuttle Express or taxi to NE Seattle from the airport in 1/2 hour (20 miles), or take Metro Link Light Rail to the downtown University Street Station (40 min.), then the 312 or 522 bus North (40 min.), then 4-10 minutes' walk to The Garden Studio. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Perfect for a Couple
Most recently we stayed here the month of Oct 2019, plus several times before, and will definitely be back. The Garden Studio is perfectly sized for a couple or single. The entire space is a good size with an excellent layout, well equipped, and all on ground level (not below ground). Altho specified as a studio the large bedroom is actually separated from living space by an opaque glass wall. Comfortable relaxing and TV area is separated from the large kitchen by a dining table. Absolutely clean, and no chemical nor room deodorizer smell (like Febreze). The owners, Dick and Julie, live in house next-door and they are great hosts! Very welcoming and accommodating, but not intrusive and respect your privacy. They have made Garden Studio a great place for short or long term stays.
You can tell Julie and Dick have been at this for awhile. They are true pros in the business.
The studio itself is impeccably designed including the outside landscaping. It was well equipped, comfortable, quiet, cozy, and inviting.
We enjoyed sleeping to the sound of rain pitter-pattering on the skylight above the bed. We would spend some time reading each morning at the table or desk. When we returned each evening, we enjoyed the television with the Apple TV. It felt like home.
It seemed to fit perfectly with Seattle.
Exceeded our expectations!
Private, quiet, yet just a short walk away from bus stops to get us wherever we wanted to go. The owners were so kind and had the place set up with everything we could possibly need including local honey, coffee & spices. Too many things to name. The shower was great and the bathroom had a heated floor. I would definitely stay there again if we were going to the Seattle area and recommend it to our family and friends. Thanks Julie & Dick for sharing your oasis with us.
We loved staying at the Garden Cottage! Comfortable, great location. We would definitely stay there again.
A real gem
Dick and Julie have thoughtfully equipped and decorated this studio home. Some favorite touches include the heated bathroom floor, the attractive bed separator wall, the abundance of electrical outlets and fans (also includes AC), coffee-maker, and grinder.
It was comfortable and felt secure and private with a lovely back patio and garden. It provided the perfect home base for my wife and I as we visited our son and our daughter in law and grandkids, and explored Seattle. Highly recommend and hope to stay again.
We loved staying in this beautiful, Seattle retreat. It is exactly as shown in the pictures . The hosts have provided everything you could possibly need from toiletries to coffee. The peaceful setting made you instantly feel like you were on vacation. Julie is very helpful and organized. We would definitely stay here again!
The Garden Studio is on a quiet, dead-end street and has free parking in driveway and on street. It is only several minutes' drive from swimming beaches on Lake Washington, scenic walking/biking trails, an attractive outdoor shopping center (U. Village), several farmers markets, and a wide range of restaurants. Nearby are Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and several PCCs, the largest consumer-owned natural food co-op in the country. Their food is locally sourced, organic, and extremely fresh. The deli serves delicious, healthy food for take-out. Try the cashew chicken salad or the cheesy chalupas.
We are also close to public transit, sometimes easier for downtown sightseeing than driving and parking. We are about a four-minute walk from several bus stops (312 and 372), and a 10-minute walk to the 522 bus. The 312 and 522 go downtown. The 372 goes to the U of Washington, where you walk a few blocks to catch Link Light Rail, which goes all over the city, including the airport.
For more info on bus lines and Link Light Rail:
We have easy-to-follow maps to the nearby buses, and schedules, in the Guest Handbook in the Studio. And
there’s an app called “OneBusAway” which provides bus times at any given location.
