Townhouse with terrace in Carcassonne, France - Excellent location, Free WiFi, furnished as a 'home from home'
About Shelley Andrews
Simon and I are lucky enough to be balancing two adventures - our new home and renovation project on the stunningly beautiful Isle of Wight and our second home in Carcassonne in the South of France, which captured our hearts during a summer holiday there years ago. We're now able to welcome couples to stay in our newly available Garden Apartment here in Ventnor (OD E13567) and of course continue to visit our little house in beautiful Carcassonne (OD FR5911).
Shelley Andrews purchased this House in 2008
Why Shelley Andrews chose La Bastide Saint-Louis
We love the fact that we can load up our backpacks in the morning and after a short flight, be relaxing on our sunny terrace in the afternoon! The airport shuttle bus is almost door to door for us and our spirits always lift as we cross the bridge over the Canal du Midi and walk into the Bastide. We never tire of exploring the area and seem to find something new with each visit. I tour each of the Brocante shops looking for bits for the house but always find time to visit our nearest 'beach' - just 10 minutes away at the peaceful Lac du Cavayere, or we drive down to the sun-soaked beaches around Narbonne. Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards as well as remnants from its Cathar past so there's plenty to explore!
What makes this House unique
We've renovated the house as a home rather than a typical rental property so there's lots of charming features that you may not find in other accommodation. The king-size bed has a luxury mattress and Egyptian cotton linens. There's a roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom in addition to the large walk-in shower and fluffy towels - we even provide you with bathrobes to lighten your luggage. The spacious living area has lots of books and games as well as a flat screen TV to watch DVDs on, DVD player and CD/iPod docking port. There's a terrace to enjoy that glass of wine or simply look down and watch the people go about their day to day business in this delightful French town. Ryanair flies straight to Carcassonne and if you just bring hand luggage, you can keep the costs really low!

La Petite Maison - Outstanding
Lovely town house ideally situated in the heart of the Bastide. Easy access to property and excellent information provided about local restaurants, shops and markets. Additionally, lots of information about walks, transport, tourist attractions, etc. 15-20 minutes walk to the Cité. Outside terrace great for relaxing and people watching. House is very comfortable, well equipped and furnished/decorated to a high standard. Highly recommended.
Summer in the Bastide
We have thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in The Bastide, staying at the Petite Maison , which was indeed a home from home, with everything we needed to ensure our stay was very comfortable,. We took advantage of all the info provided by Shelley, and enjoyed walks around Carcassonne, to Trèbes ( though it was an extremely hot 13 miles- the 1 Euro bus back was a blessing! We also enjoyed boat trips on the Canal du Midi, and a train trip to Limoux - but just to let others know, the Jardins du Parfumerie there are now closed. We found the locals friendly and willing to put up with our attempts to speak french! The markets were great and the fresh produce superb. The staff in the Boucherie and charcuterie were lovely and the pate was delicious! The fromagerie next door had a wonderful selection of tasty cheese, and the local patisserie were all great. We dined out a few times, and whilst Le Comte Roger was fine dining, it was a bit over priced and the cassoulet was nowhere near as good as the one we had in the Restaurant de les Comedies. The Hotel Terminus offers great reasonably priced food, and a lovely place to stay a bit cooler whilst enjoying a Biere or sirop. We also visited the haunted house in le Cite and the musee D’inquisition - both of which were fun. Thankyou Shelley for providing us with a lovely place to stay for our memorable holiday.
Lovely property and great location close to the centre of Carcassonne
We stayed recently at this property and had a lovely time. The house was very clean, comfortable and well-equipped for our stay. The accommodation is arranged over 3 floors with a very large and comfortable bedroom plus adjoining bathroom on the first floor. The kitchen/dining area/lounge are on the top floor with access to a small terrace which is lovely for relaxing and enjoying the sun. We travelled to Carcassonne by train and the house is only a short and easy walk from the station. It is also very close to the main central square but during our stay we always found the location to be relatively quiet and peaceful. Shelley was very helpful with information and recommendations that made our stay very enjoyable. Our only disappointment was not being able to find anywhere to hire bikes. We had plenty to do during our stay and enjoyed visiting the Cité and walking along the Canal du Midi.
Well appointed townhouse in the heart of the Bastide.
Well located town house in the heart of the Bastide. Easy walk to everywhere from the canal du Midi to the Aude, to the cite.
Well appointed with comfortable bed, nice bathroom and well equipped kitchen. Terrace would be great when it’s a bit hotter.
Really enjoyed being in the centre, especially on market days when the Bastide comes alive. Great walking available in all directions.
Well appointed and very quaint. The perfect getaway.
This little tie house has everything you’d need for your trip! It’s the ideal location for exploring during the day and a little bit of the city at night. The bed is quite comfortable with plush linens. Street parking was easy to find and to maintain throughput our stay. It was such a pleasure to communicate with Shelley, we’ll definitely be back.
Charming, comfy, cozy.
My title says it all. We stayed one week here in early January, not the ideal time to visit Carcassonne, but we enjoyed the lack of crowds, the beautiful sights, and the restaurants (the ones that were open!). But, after chilly days "out" it was absolutely lovely to be "in" at this wonderful place. We loved our time enjoying the comforts of this unique and beautiful townhouse. Communicating with Shelley before, during, and after was not only easy, but a pleasure!
P.S. Daily French classes with Dominique at Ludo Expression, just a short walk away, was another highlight.
Ask someone to imagine a French marketplace and they'll probably conjure up images of bright awnings, colourful fruit, vegetables, flowers, breads, cheeses and pates of all description. The thrice weekly market held in Place Carnot, Carcassonne is one of the best we've seen and a true feast for the senses. Relax with a coffee and pastry at Bar Felix and people-watch the morning away!
Place Carnot is a two minute walk from the house and you'll find many great restaurants, shops and facilities here too including banks, chemist, patisseries and chocolatiers. There's also a covered market just a few streets past the square, selling fresh fish, meat and pate. With all of the tempting boulangerie nearby, you'll be spoilt for choice on where to buy your fresh, warm croissants in the mornings!
The Canal du Midi is also just a five minute walk away. You can hire bicycles locally (we have space for you to store them), walk, take a boat along the waterway or just relax on a bench and watch the boats go by. A ten minute stroll in the other direction will bring you alongside the River Aude, cool water perfect for dipping hot feet into! There are lovely walks along this route, including the lesser-known path up to la Cite.
The tranquil Lac du Cavayere is located in the beautiful hills surrounding the town and combines a sandy beach with water sports, walking, tree-based activities (climbing, zip-lines etc) as well as relaxing walks and swimming. You can cycle there, take a bus, drive there in ten minutes or walk there in about an hour and a half.
Carcassonne always seems to have activities organised for its residents and visitors throughout the year, making it a great destination whatever the season. Spring brings Jazz Week, a must for any jazz enthusiast.
In Summer it's the 'Festival of two towns'; a series of musical events featuring pop, rock, opera, dance, theatre, French and international music - many of the performances are free.
The date in everyone's diary is July 14th, when at 10.30pm, the skies above la Cite are set ablaze with an amazing fireworks spectacular lasting over 25 minutes, it's an incredible display and reputed to be one of the best in Europe.
Then, during the last week of August, it's the turn of 'Spanish Week' when shows, events, concerts, dance performances, and gastronomic specialities combine to make a great party atmosphere.
We love Christmas in Carcassonne when the town is transformed into a winter wonderland with ice-skating rink, festive market, big wheel and rides, toboggan run and a fireworks display. You'll find the location of our house very convenient for all of these events and more.
Getting here is easy with Carcassonne's airport less than a ten minute drive from the centre of town. The airport shuttle bus meets each flight (5 Euros per person) and will drop you at the train station (Gare SNCF) - just a few minutes walk from the house. If you fly to Toulouse or Beziers then you can catch a direct train to Carcassonne.
Carcassonne is surrounded by vineyards but you don't have to miss out on wine tasting if you're travelling without a car. You could join one of the excellent local tours we recommend or walk to one of the 'caves' here in town. You will need a car or to join a small tour group if you'd like to visit the Cathar sites such as Montsegur, Lastours, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens,
The beaches along the south coast are a 45 minute drive away. Head to Narbonne and turn right to explore the coastline towards Perpignan and Spain or left towards Montpellier and the Cote d'Azur.
There's so much to do in this beautiful and impressive region and we hope you love it as much as we do.
