Coach House in Ulverston, Lake District, Cumbria - Located In Georgian Market Town Close To Coniston And Windermere Lakes
- english, french
I'm originally from the Furness area and return fairly frequently for the purposes of kith and kin, and because my own family love the area.
Owner purchased this Barn in 2000
Why Owner chose Ulverston
My wife and I lived in Ulverston for a number of years, moving away for work reasons. I love the quirkiness of Ulverston, its people, its pubs, its down to earth nature embedded in such beauty - between the Furness fells, the lakes and Morecombe Bay. The coach house was a ruin when I acquired it - it dates from the 1750's and has recycled ships' timbers in the roof beams. It originally stabled horses for what was the presbytery to the church. This is now the Oddfellows hall whose tower sits in the drive to the coach house.
What makes this Barn unique
Ulverston sets it's store out as the Festival Town, and there are a great number of these - the highlights for me being the Dickensian Festival, the Charter fortnight culminating in the lamp procession, and the walking festival - Ulverston is the start of the Cumbrian Way. The Laurel and Hardy Museum, the Buddhist monastery and the Hoad monument lighthouse add to the character of the town, with its ginnels and cobbles, and excellent pubs. Moss Tarn is tucked away down a lane just outside the central area of town. Its kitted out as a luxurious retreat from the weather. Its only 8.5 miles to Newby Bridge on Windermere, 10 miles to Coniston Water, and a walk down Ulverston Canal to a breathtaking view of Morecombe Bay.

Very nice property
We were very pleased with this quaint dwelling just a short walk from the cobbled main street of Ulverston.
Instructions were very clear and although there is no parking at the property there is a large pay and display car park just a one minute walk away and it is easy to unload in Tarnside.
Entry was very easy and the property very clean. The housekeeper even called round on the first night to make sure everything was ok.
There was just 2 of us staying and it was very spacious for us. It can obviously sleep more with the pull out couch and even on the long sofa . I would definitely return if there was 3 of us (1 double and 1 single bed in the bedroom) but for somebody who likes their space it may be a little cramped with 4/5/ but certainly possible.
We made the mistake of doing a shop beforehand but there was lots of things we needn't have bought; lots of tea/coffee and condiments/sauces. I suppose it may vary but there were also tins and pasta and even some ice lollies in the freezer. I would definitely check out what is in the cupboards before doing a shop.
Overall we were very impressed my only (very minor) criticisms would be that the oven could do with new icon labels so that you know what setting you have it on and the table chairs (which are perfectly fine) do not quite meet the very high standards of the rest of the furnishings.
Finally, and it does say it in the property description but please be aware that the bedroom is accessed by a ladder. I was fine with it and my 10-year old son loved it but for the elderly or very young children they might need to use the pull out couch (which we did not use but it looked very nice).
Not sure if I will ever be back in Ulverston but if I am I would definitely stay here again.
Lovely weekend away
Lovely weekend getaway. Property was very clean and has everything you could need.
Only negative were the directions once you get in to Ulverston. Property is quite hidden and locals didn't understand the map directions either.
Overall exceeded our expectations
Thanks for that and glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm up there this weekend and will review and rework the directions.
Lovely place to stay
Very clean and lovely place. Everything you need ! Very nice- would recommend!!
Very nice and clean
Easy check in process. Very nice and clean. Would definitely come back and have recommended to family who will be visiting
Loved it. Great location. Great layout with lots of character. Only downside was negotiating the bedroom stairs in the night...but don't drink as much as we did and you'll be fine😁
Lovely property very well equipped very great location for lakes and other attractions. Nice pubs and eating places around. Really enjoyed
