Why Barbara/Glenn Reese chose Sudbury
Our family served in the foreign service and we had to become re-enculturated every other year for a month. We wanted our family to have a place to go. The mother in the family came here every summer with her family and rented a cottage on this lake. The owner of our cottage had several more and he was finding that taxes and maintenance were taking a toll on him. Although this is only a seasonal cottage, we jumped at the chance to buy from him. Hence, we are the third generation coming to the lake.
What makes this Cottage unique
The setting is most pleasant. The cottage is on a peninsula, so traffic is minimal. It is swim in front with plenty of opportunity to use the lake with the kayaks, paddle boards and sailfish.

A private cabin on the lake in the woods!
Renting the cabin on Lake Hortonia in VT was the highlight of our summer! Bring clothes for warm and cool weather. We enjoyed using the paddleboards, kayaks and swimming the most. Barbara was helpful, hospitable and very sweet. We also liked the fact that we were able to cook our meals and only had to leave the cabin a few times to buy food. There is a great Country Store close by that sells most of what you would need.
Quiet and idyllic but still lots of fun!
From the quiet evenings on the lake to the farmers markets in the surrounding towns, our stay at the Reese Cottage was an excellent break from the hustle and bustle of suburban life. We loved the set-up of the cottage, especially the large screened in porch, and the kayaks and paddleboards provided the kids much entertainment. We miss Lake Hortonia already and cannot wait to return!
Great House Great Porch, Great Spot!
My Wife and I just got home from renting this house on the lake on Sunday. As promised, almost all of our "House Time" was spent on the porch, and the rest was spent on the dock or around the camp fire. We had wonderful sunsets every night, as opposed to the folks across the lake facing East, which became shaded well prior to sunset. Facing west is the way to go on Lake Hortonia as the sun keeps you warmer for a longer period.
The lake water was warm and clean and we enjoyed watching the occasional water skier or tubers. This lake is quite and peaceful. It is better to bring at least half your meals with you as the nearest restaurants are in Brandon about 8 miles away.
We will be back next summer, perhaps for two weeks...
Lovely cabin on beautiful Lake Hortonia
Enjoyed our stay immensely. Cabin is inviting & very comfortable. Can't beat eating meals on the large screened porch while looking at the water. Good swimming, good fishing. Enjoyed just sitting near the lake reading a book or watching boats go by. Shopped in Middlebury & Brandon. Took some back roads amid beautiful farms & mountain views. We're already planning a longer stay.
This cottage is set directly on the lake. There is a dock and raft for swimming in front. Paddle boards, kayaks, and sailfish are available, and rowboat comes with the cottage. 6 horsepower motor available for rent. This spring fed lake has excellent fresh water fishing with Bass and Pike predominating. Kids will love the dingle fish-sunnies and perch.
There are several hiking trails leading to small lakes in the mountains as well as portions of the Appalachian Trail accessed from Brandon or Middlebury Gap roads.
Berry picking is always in season with strawberries and raspberries coming in June July and blueberries in July/August at a state managed site where picking is free.
Antiguing in Brandon, Pittford, Rutland, Middlebury is always fun and sometimes a great find at a good price happens. At times there are auctions (sites and dates found in the Rutland Herald on Thursdays)
Quaint villages are located within 20 miles of the cottage. Villages have band concerts on the village green in the summer. Schedules found according to town: Brandon; Castleton; FairHaven; Orwell, and Rutland, online.
An authentic rodeo is held every Saturday night at Pond Hill Ranch in Castleton. It is a qualifying rodeo for the national championships. Stock Car racing is on Rt 22A (the Devil's Bowl)on Friday nights-also a qualifying race.
Food shopping is in Brandon where there is Hanover's and several other small shops as well as Wood's vegetable and fruit stand (this place has the best corn!)
Medical facilities are good. There is a health center with several doctors in Castleton Corners, 11 miles south. Porter Hospital in Middlebury has excellent service, 15 miles North on Rt 30.
