About Yvonne Speak
My name is Yvonne and my husband's is Kevin. We decided to move to Spain 7 years ago. We both work, Kevin is a builder (and has been for the past 30yrs+) but also deals with the maintenance of houses as well as swimming pools. I'm in property management, which includes not only looking after the houses but gardens too. We have 2 sons, both grown up now. But sadly they both live in England, although we do get to see them when they come for their holidays. We have 3 dogs (Kevin is like Doctor Dolittle, he has a way with animals, as does our youngest son).
Yvonne Speak purchased this House in 2005
Why Yvonne Speak chose Arriate
After looking at various other regions, we happened upon the village of Arriate. And that as they say was that.We were smitten completely. The surrounding scenery of the mountains was breathtaking (and still is). We brought the house in 2005 as a renovation project, it was just an empty shell, unloved for many years. It has been fully transformed into a beautiful house, after a lot of hard work (mostly Kevin's). Arriate is a traditional Spanish village close to the historical town of Ronda which is only 10 mins away. Although the village also has its own history. So you can enjoy life at a civilised pace with all the amenities you could want close by.
What makes this House unique
The house is situated in the middle of the village of Arriate. So you are close to bars where you can taste some of the traditional tapas, and shops where you can buy locally grown produce. There are also various walks and routes for cycling around Arriate. As well as horse riding. You are within easy reach of the coast and its array of beaches and golf courses which is 45min away. Seville is only 2 hours by car and Cordoba and Granada just that bit further. But if you want to let the train take the strain there is a very good station in Ronda.

Cozy and comfortable
The apartment is small, but comfortable and very well equipped. It was a bit chilly at times (it IS January), but a wood-pellet burning stove heats things up and is rather pleasant. Hostess Yvonne was very helpful and welcoming. Finding a place to eat in Arriate in January was a real challenge. The two most promising places were closed, so we ended up picking up bread, cheese, and Iberian ham from the local baker and butcher. With a bottle of wine, it was very nice.
Ronda is only a short drive away. The ruins of a Roman town are a half-hour drive in the other direction.
The townhouse was as described. Nicely decorated, spotlessly clean, quiet location. Well-equipped kitchen. Comfortable beds. The terrace off the back is a great place to sit.
Parking was almost always available. But without an assigned parking space, we had one occasion where it was difficult to find parking nearby. Also, we followed instructions but could not make the CD player play movies. But these are small things. I recommend this as a place to stay and you should consider staying in Arriate rather than Ronda--if you've come to stay a few days--as Ronda is so busy and "touristy." But Ronda is stunning.
The other thing to recommend Arriate is that it is home to one of the very best restaurants we experienced during a month in Spain, "El Muelle de Arriate," located at the train station. Look it up on tripadvisor and try the Iberian grilled pork.
Thank you for your review. Sorry you had trouble with the CD player, I wish you had let me know. I would of come and shown you. Will be looking at the instructions and revising them.
Great house, amazing place...
Great place to get away from it all. Came with a mate for a boys hol. The house has everything you need. Comfy beds, well stocked kitchen and a relaxing lounge and terrace. Very clean and obviously well-maintained There are plenty of bars in the village where you can eat and drink, and its not far to stagger back to the house. Best bars are El Chozo and the Capri bar. Very quite street, so lay-ins not a problem. Shops and banks are also close by. The local pool is only a few minutes walk and a great place to chill out after a late night, and to sun-bathe. There?s also a bar there where you can get refreshments and snacks.
Ronda is only a short ride away by taxi or bus and a great place for sight seeing. The El Tajo bridge is must. Arriate is an amazing place. It looks like a sleepy little village, but nothing could be further from the truth. We will be back again. Would definitely recommend this house to everyone I know. Thanks Yvonne for all your help.
This property is in a delightful village just a few minutes from Rhonda within easy driving distance of some other lovely villages. While there was no parking directly outside the property it was always available a very short distance away ( we could usually see the car from the balcony) but a small car would be an advantage as the streets are narrow and windy ( as you would expect!)
Keys were left in a lock box arrangement which meant you did not have to arrange a specific time to arrive - a real bonus when you are on holiday.
The property itself was very compact but perfect for the two of us. It had been recently re decorated and had been done beautifully with a wonderful bathroom, delightful d?cor, great art and lovely bed linen.
A great supply of local information, maps etc and a small library of books. Having wifi supplied was valuable.
It was rather hot when we visited but we carried the downstairs fan up to our bedroom and found this provided a nice breeze.
We did our supermarket and general shopping in Rhonda because it suited us better but there was a good range of local shops within walking distance of the property. We did not use the restaurants in the village but there were some great options in Rhonda.
Would certainly recommend this very clean and well maintained property to couples or small families ( stairs perhaps not great for young children!) looking for a peaceful village atmosphere with many attractions within easy driving distance.
Thank you for your review. Your observations have been noted and acted upon. I take it the ceiling fans in the bedrooms were not adequate. So new free standing fans have been put in place. The house has also now been refurnished. With a new sofa, coffee table, dining table and chairs, and side-board.
Thank you Kristell for your lovely review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay.
Arriate is approximately 45 mins away from San Pedro de Alcantara on the Costa Del Sol. The road is a very windy mountain road, with breathtaking views at every turn.
Nearest airports are: Malaga 1 hour 15 min. Jerez 1½ hour and Sevilla 2 hours approx. Car hire is recommended.
Arriate is 10 mins from the historic town of Ronda. There are many other villages within easy reach e.g Grazalema, Zahara. Also Sevilla is approx 2 hours away and Granada 2½ by car. All accessible by train from Ronda
There are bars which serve good meals within 10mins walk. The local shops including a supermarket, grocers, bakers and butcher are all within easy walking distance.
The house is ideal for those wishing to explore the many walks around Arriate and the surrounding mountain villages.
Or if you require something that will get your adrenalin going more there are companies in and around Ronda that offer various sports. please request details.
