About Ruth Sharman
John and I used to take holidays in France, usually in Normandy but we also ventured further south on occasion. We loved the more relaxed pace of life and the feeling of space you find here and the politeness of the French people. So we formulated a loose five year plan to sell up in England and move to France permanently. After two years, we could not remember what we were waiting for and put our house on the market! We arrived in May 2010 and found this house soon after, it needed some work and updating before we were happy that we had somewhere other people would like too. We are a relaxed couple, (who wouldn't be living here?!) we enjoy our lives just the way they are. We are friendly and approachable and will be only too happy to help you have a great holiday, whether this is suggesting places to visit, cooking for you or just sharing a glass of wine and having a chat! We will be delighted to meet you if you feel that you will enjoy this experience too.

Why Ruth Sharman chose
When we first saw the house it felt right, we were looking for two properties, one for us to live in and one we could let out as a holiday home. The house had been empty and unloved for several years so we needed to give it back some character, it also became our home for the first year as we began the task of turning the barn next door into our home. We now spend our summers in the barn and winters in the house as the heating system is not yet in place in the barn, so we know the house is comfortable and we are always on hand to answer any questions and for anything you may need. We love this part of France, it is green and peaceful and very much an escape from the speed of modern life, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
What makes this Cottage unique
We are not a gite complex so you are not sharing a peaceful location with others or all trying to use the pool at the same time! If you are looking for quiet, then we are certain you will find it here. Sometimes, sitting outside, all you can hear are the birds. The living areas inside the house are light and airy and there is so much outside space you need never feel over crowded. At the same time we are not far from amenities and places of interest and the roads are so quiet it is a pleasure to travel around. In addition, we would love to cook for you. Ruth was a chef in her previous working life and we have developed a selection of menus using fresh, local ingredients. We may not have a restaurant within walking distance but we have something even better!

A slice of relaxed rural France
Ruth and John have created a fantastic holiday destination, we didn’t want to leave.
From the moment we arrived the pace of life slowed, and we felt we could relax and make the property our home for two weeks.
With its 3 garden spaces: BBQ and dining space at the front, a quiet private garden (with hammock) to the rear, and the main garden space to the side, with pool, badminton space, lawns, frogs and pond, vine shaded area… there’s so much to do, so may spaces, there’s room for everyone in the group. And that’s just the outside… there’s a big kitchen and dining space, and a large living room, all with those typically French furnishings, and original features.
And if all of the above doesn’t get you… Ruth will cook for you! There are menus, and Ruth can amend to suit your tastes… fabulous food… can’t recommend it enough!
Thank you Ruth and John! Hope to be back!
Thank you Ric and Helen for such a fantastic review! We are glad that you enjoyed your stay here and we look forward to your next visit.
John & Ruth
Rural character property close to outdoor pursuits
Ruth and John are fabulous hosts, thank you for sharing your idyllic corner of France. The area is beautiful with lots of outdoor activities. The house is spacious with lovely decor and well equipped. The garden is perfect for relaxing with a pool, barbeque area, shaded areas for the children to play and seating for relaxing. I can't recommend Ruth and John's property enough.
Many thanks to Anna and Patrick for such a wonderful review! We look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Peaceful and relaxing location
We had very relaxing week. The house was charming and more spacious than we imagined, plenty of room for 5 of us. The huge garden was amazing and when the weather was hot you wouldn't want to be anywhere else, it was just perfect. You could relax by the pool in the sun loungers or find a shady spot to yourself somewhere in the garden. Our children loved the pool and also made use of the swing ball, badminton and swing. We had a couple of days when the weather wasn't so good but it made us venture out to a nearby lake that had treetop adventures (like GoApe), which was a great day out. Ruth and John were on hand if you needed them but left us to enjoy the house and gardens as we wanted. Also a big thank you to Ruth who helped us out on our first day when we forgot French supermarkets closed at midday on a Sunday! We especially appreciated the complementary bottle of rose in the fridge.
Perfect rural retreat
We recently stayed 3 nights at La Grenouille Verte. Arriving very late in the dark and in the pouring rain we weren't really able to appreciate how nice the setting is. Ruth and John had been kind enough to prepare us some food on our arrival and get us a much needed bottle or two of wine!
On our second night we had an excellent 3-course meal prepared for us by Ruth and John, along with some lovely paired wines.
The house is very well maintained and clean. There is ample room for 6 people (we were a group of 4), with a large kitchen (very well stocked with pots/pans/utensils/glasses/etc), large lounge with a log burner, a large bathroom and separate toilet along with 3 good sized bedrooms (1 king, 1 double, 1 twin).
The gardens are immaculately maintained and is the weather was good I imagine would be a nice place to relax with a glass of wine!
Ruth and John are great hosts and the place represents excellent value for money. We would definitely return there in the future.
Well equipped, superb garden
Quiet hamlet 20 mins from large village with decent supermarket and excellent boulangerie/patissierie. Plenty to see in area, chateaux, caves, villages on the best in France list. Three comfortable bedrooms upstairs, bathroom downstairs but not far away. Big kitchen with dining table for 6+, great lounge with 2 big sofas. Books everywhere, board games provided, every kitchen utensil you might need. Enormous garden with games- badminton, boules, swing-ball. Pool great for cooling down in heat of summer but house is good for stay anytime of year. Marvelous welcome from Ruth and John with super meal on first night at very reasonable cost.
Beatifully furnished and decorated house with pool and large gardens
The spacious house is beautifully decorated and furnished. The beds were comfortable with crisp clean white sheets. The book shelves are packed with books and there are many interesting pictures hanging on the walls. We found the house clean and had all the mod cons needed for a comfortable holiday. The kitchen was well equipped and the towels provided (bath and pool) were nice and plush. The lovely gardens are large. There is a swing in a large oak tree, badminton net and set, swing ball, but the pool was the favourite with us. Ruth and John made us feel very welcome. They were very helpful but always respected our privacy. Ruth cooked us a meal on the last night there. And I can honestly say it was the best meal we'd had in two weeks. I highly recommend Ruth's cooking. There's a variety of things to do in the area. We visited Limoges, châteaus, went on a walk round the nearby forest and went to a tree top adventure park (like GoApe). We really enjoyed our stay here.
As the Limousin is in the centre of France we are a long way from the coast but lakes are plentiful here including four leisure lakes within easy driving reach which provide beach areas for swimming and kayak or pedalo hire. These all have lifeguards on duty at the times when swimming is allowed and are immaculately kept. Entrance and parking is free!
Limoges Airport is our nearest, just 40 minutes away and car hire is available from there. There are also airports at Bergerac and Bordeaux which would give a car journey to here of about two hours.
The TGV runs to Angouleme and Limoges so journeys via Eurostar are also possible but it is recommended that you have a car here to explore the area.
Vimpere has several visiting van/shops throughout the week, which provide some basics such as bread, meat and groceries. There are a number of small towns near us with supermarkets, boulangeries, banks(ATM) and tabacs/restaurant/bars. Cussac is 6kms away, Chalus 10kms, St Matthieu 12kms. For the hypermarkets we would recommend St. Junien about 40 mins away with a Hyper U, Le Clerc, Lidl etc etc!
If you like to cycle but aren't able to bring bikes with you, we can arrange cycle hire through Bike Hire Direct. They provide good quality bikes and all necessary equipment for your use on holiday. You can see what they offer here http://www.bikehiredirect.com/
The bikes will be delivered free to the house, so if you feel like an energetic break this may be for you!
Vimpere is in the heart of the Perigord/Limousin Natural park and trees and lakes are plentiful. There are at least four leisure lakes within easy reach which provide beach areas for swimming and kayak or pedalo hire. There is a fishing lake 2kms away where you can fish for carp, roach and trout for 6€ a day or perhaps just stop for a picnic lunch by the lakeside. We have two chateaux nearby which are open to visitors and are on the route taken by Richard the Lionheart at the end of the 12th century. I must mention the Chateau de Montbrun, rebuilt in the 15th century it is reputedly the last chateau visited by Richard the Lionheart before his death. It has been restored to a very high standard by the present owner. I am one of the guides for this chateau which is definately worth a visit. It costs 10€ for adults and 5€ for children.
Limoges is an interesting city with its historic buildings, museums, modern shops and porcelain production. There is a small sightseeing train which will take you around the old quarter.
Oradour sur Glane the village of the martyrs destroyed by the Waffen SS in 1944, is a worthwhile if sobering place to visit.
About half an hour away is the small town of Piegut, quiet and sleepy most of the week but on Wednesday morning it is packed with market stalls selling everything from moules to baskets, pottery to mattresses! Sit at one of the cafes with a coffee and people watch and then buy your baguette and cheese for lunch but remember to get there early, it all starts to close up at midday for the traditional long french lunchtime!
Throughout the summer there are frequent evening food producers markets in the local towns, local producers set up stalls to sell their wares, you will find all sorts of wonderful local produce and the commune provide a stall selling chips and baguettes to accompany your meal. You are invited to buy your dinner and have it cooked on one of the barbecues. Then sit and eat at the trestle tables as the sun goes down. There is live music and dancing if you can still move!
