About Mrs Jenny Steele
My husband and I have recently retired and now have the time to focus our attention on our two holiday cottages. Between holiday lets we spend as much time as possible in our cottage in Devon as we love the area of the South Hams. We are also delighted to enable people to enjoy the wonderful City of Oxford and surrounding area whilst staying at our cottage in Wheatley.
Mrs Jenny Steele purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Mrs Jenny Steele chose Cornworthy
We love the South Hams and were delighted to find a traditional cottage in a village location near the estuary to the river Dart.
What makes this Cottage unique
Excellent car parking facilities which is rare in Devon.
100% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 14 days before arrival date.
Excellent stay in a lovely cottage - well maintained and clean, with all the basics to be able to arrive and relax.
Quaint cottage. Could do with a good spring clean, we left it cleaner than it was when we arrived.
Could do with a better shower perhaps one fixed to the wall.
Lovely enclosed garden, Good local pub just round the corner,
No shop in the village had to go to Dartmouth or Totnes for provisions, Didn't find that to much of a problem.
Great walks around the area, especially to bow creek to the Maltsters pub for a drink and a meal.
Cornworthy is a really lovely village, and the people were very friendly and obliging.
We had a really lovely week and hopefully visit again in the future.
Lovely cottage and location
Just the job for us and our dogs, Sweet private garden and beautiful village setting with very pleasant walks to the river.
Lovely cottage set in a quaint location
The terraced cottage is located in a small village in the heart of the countryside. It is very good for dog walking with many countryside walks just minutes away. The village pub was unfortunately closed during our visit but it is set to open at the end of May 2019 under new management. However there is a nice walk following the river to the next village where there are 2 pubs, both serving food and real ale. The walk takes about 25 minutes and our dog loved it - and was welcome at both pubs. The cottage itself had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay, including a log burner, free wifi, and Freesat TV. For us the location was a good base to visit other places such as Dartmouth, Torquay, and Brixham. We found plenty to do during our week long visit and would happily return.
On arrival at Bumble cottage we found the cottage as the photos except for the ten years or so of hard use in between. Furniture and fittings very dirty and worn and the most uncomfortable sofa and chair we have ever sat on, lamp shades looked as if they had never been cleaned, cob webs every where ( even for being out in the country ) and the carpet edges and skirting boards filthy. The double bed in the front bedroom was fine with clean linen with the only down side being the hanging area for clothes being on the landing with a curtain in front. The bathroom was not too bad except for the bath having a hand held shower attachment that if you raised up high enough to use lost it's hot water feed. The kitchen apart from being dirty between cupboards, washing machine and also down the side of the fridge was adequately supplied with everything you would need. The final straw for us and the reason we left early was that the emersion heater failed and left us with no hot water other than boiling the kettle.
We have photo's to prove all of the above, but what the property requires is a full makeover with redecorating the living room and kitchen and new furniture. We telephoned the owner before leaving with our reasons why, with the only reaction being disbeleif.
We are truly sorry that you did not find Bumble Cottage to your liking. The cottage is regularly cleaned between lets and given a deep clean at the start of the season and at the end. The sofa has recently been replaced so hopefully will prove more comfortable. We redecorate each year and maintain equipment as necessary. It was really unfortunate that the immersion went wrong during your visit but it was replaced by the end of the day you reported it.
Charming, clean, good value, well equipped traditional cottage in an excellent location
The cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped for a stay of a week for our family of three. The house is very attractive, with delightful traditional features, and the decoration and furnishings are extremely comfortable, modern and in excellent condition. We appreciated the excellent wifi and tv. The house is lovely and warm with constant hot water. The village is very dark and quiet at night, so we slept well. If it had been colder it would have been fun to have tried out the lovely log-burner in your beautiful fireplace. The garden is lovely and the parking to the rear of the garden super-convenient. We loved the cottage - I could not be more appreciative.
The cottage is in the centre of an attractive village, in easy walking reach of Tuckenhay and Ashprington along the lovely Bow Creek. Walk up the hill and turn left just before the church, take a 5 minute walk down down a (muddy) public footpath through a farmyard to Bow Creek to find a fabulous rope swing over the creek to entertain your children whilst you admire the lovely view of the water from the bench. Unfortunately the village pub was closed during our visit, but notices suggest it may reopen in May.
We very much enjoyed visits further-afield to Totnes, Dartmouth, Dittisham (arrive with crabbing nets, if you have children), Bigbury (the tractor-ride to the island is fun), Salcombe (a lovely circular cliff-top walk from the National Trust's Overbecks property) and the local chilli farm. A river trip from Totnes to Dartmouth was fun. The drawer of information leaflets in the house was very helpful in planning our days out. We very much look forward to returning to the area, and to staying again in your lovely cottage.
Nearest beach is Blackpool Sands, a lovely privately owned sandy beach with large car park, good cafe and a shop (dogs are not allowed in summer). Dartmoor with its wealth of attractions and a number of National Trust properties are all within easy reach as well as steam trains, shire horses, bird sanctuary, and a butterfly farm.
