Secluded country location, small botanical garden - close to unspoilt beaches.
About PATRICK SANDERSON
Well what can I tell you?! Easier to book now, come visit and I can tell you over a bottle of Rioja on the verandah! In brief; British passport holder, Cumbrian by birth. Many years living in Dorset. Re-located here 2001 full time. Living alone with my two waggy dogs and unusual garden.
PATRICK SANDERSON purchased this Cottage in 1989
Why PATRICK SANDERSON chose Motril
Found pre-internet, back in the day via a classified ad in Exchange & Mart (remember them?) Costa Tropical, an unknown region of Andalucia then and still fairly undiscovered. Seduced by the tranquility, climate, proximity to the coast, agricultural setting and blank canvas for garden design.
What makes this Cottage unique
Costa Tropical Oasis (Casa Pequeña & El Apartamento), unique in the Motril area. Hidden within a small unmanicured jungle/cottage style garden, lush, natural, organic and green. Abundant water supply allows the widest range of plantlife in the area. Few neighbours, peaceful, homely accomodation, yet only 5 minute drive to the beach or bustling Motril town with excellent shopping, sports, restaurants and tapas bars - the area remains VERY Spanish. Secluded and tranquil, yet only couple of minutes from the coastal motorway, making days along the coast or inland so easy. Motril port 5 minutes away with various daily crossings to Morocco and Melilla - in fact watch the ferries and cruise ships depart drom your own private roof terrace. Some travellers have stayed four or five times and always find something new to discover in the area. Others rarely leave the properties and gardens, an easy place to relax, chill or meditate. The two waggy resident dogs snoozing in the sun, add to the sense of wellbeing too. Any questions before booking, please ask. Hope to welcome you soon.

Many thanks for taking time to post your lovely review. Delighted that you loved the cottage and managed to totally chill, forgetting your hectic lives at home. Yes, the gardens and outdoor spaces are quite special in a normally hot, dry dusty Andalucía; lush, green and shady even in the August heat. Looking forward to welcoming you both back one day; Hector and Boris will be waiting...
fantastic, quirky, friendly, natural, art lovers, nature lovers, dog lovers haven
Just as it was described. We were made very welcome by Patrick and his three dogs. The gardens were spectacular with something different round every corner. Very peaceful with its own pool and outside dining areas/bbqs. Very quick and easy to get to Motril, the beaches and to the mountains. Patrick was always available for help and recommendations. We would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience something a bit different.
Many thanks for taking the time to post your Excellent Review. So pleased that you easily managed to relax here (most do!) Enjoying the lush gardens, bustling Motril, beaches and mountains - all accessible within minutes. Hope to welcome you back in the future.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Casa Pequeña, Motril. Our host Patrick was charming and helpful, nothing was too much trouble and his 3 dogs, Boris, Dino and Hector an absolute joy. What a wonderful oasis he has created, its private away from the noise of everday life and the gardens incredible. Great place to chill out around the pool and enjoy BBQ in the evening. Our stay there wasn't long enough we shall definitely return.
Thanks for taking the trouble to post your Excellent Review. Delighted that you appreciated all the different aspects of Casa Pequeña and the tranquil gardens. Looking forward to welcoming you both back (& Looloo) in the future.
Tired and Unloved
Now back home and studying the reviews again - I agree with the people from Germany who visited in Sept 2015 compared to all the others from years previous. I am unsure of what has gone wrong but this place is very unkempt, tired and in need of a facelift both in the gardens and in the casita which we rented. When you meet Patrick he comes across as a very nice gentleman and shows you round some thing that on the surface looks great, but once you are alone to discover your surroundings its another view.
One should not have to clean the place thoroughly on arrival, this should be done for you and its for the tenant then to leave it as found. We left the place after one hour as not prepared to clean for Patrick. We had to email him as he popped out when we decided to leave and he was shocked that we thought there was a problem and presumed we didn't like to Spanish Rural Location. Far from it, if I wanted Blackpool in the sun I would have booked into Benidorm. Luckily we found a lovely authentic Spanish Hotel with no English and enjoyed the rest of the week.
Also disappointed that Casa Pequeña failed to match expectations and apologies for the perceived shortcomings! Pleased that alternative and more suitable accommodation was found and holiday enjoyed nontheless. However, some clarification is required:
1) - To quote, directly from e-mail informing me of hasty departure "sorry to have left your property so soon, the place was very quaint and charming but not to my Husbands taste and not as he imagined it would be from photos on the web. He is rather OCD when it comes to cleanliness and was peturbed at the kitchen not eing to his standards, oops and too much dust!"
This should have been brought to my attention face to face and perhaps could have been sorted easily, rather than driving away indicating they were off to familiarise themselves with nearby Motril.
2) - Of course Casa Pequeña is always cleaned and prepared for travellers to a good standard and welcome pack popped into the fridge. the vast majority of travellers are perfectly satisfied and many return from all over the World.
However, if one arrives with a negative mindset and 'the need' to undertake an in depth investigation on cleaning practices, (brought about by OCD symptons), then I defy any rural Spanish cottage to pass!
Often swallows, geckos and tree frogs visit, the lush jungle gardens become an alien territory and unsafe to spend time in. Plus 3 waggy dogs wandering around and dozing in the sun become a worry too!
3) - If considering a stay at Casa Pequeña, do some research on the internet (long history, lots there!), do not expect to find a sterile, spartan holiday-type villa. But, more as other travellers note, a quirky tranquil base and different from regular holiday homes. Browse the many reviews. The casita was actually decorated in June and is far from tired, extremly well equipped for a traditional Spanish cottage with all 'mod cons'.
Interestingly, despite being more than satisfied with the location; alternative accommodation was chosen well away from the Costa Tropical in a more 'touristy' location at a luxury hotel!
A Hidden Paradise
My wife and myself along with our eight month old Shih Tzu spent very enjoyable and tranquil long weekend at the property. The apartment was very well equipped and exactly as described it was typically Spanish, for us it felt like home from home.
The gardens are absolutely wonderful far better than we imagined with plants from various parts of the world also three very friendly dogs can sometimes be found, the spaniel "Hugo" quite often can be seen cooling off in one of the many water features or fountains.
There is a reasonable size pool at the far end of the gardens (we tried it once but too cold for us, living in Spain for the past seven years we are acclimatised and do not swim this early in the year, Brrr!). the pool terrace has a nice shaded area to chill out, Also in this area is a summer kitchen with barbacoa y gas ring, paella pan if you are feeling really adventurous.
Patrick the owner of the property besides being a very passionate gardener is a very approachable and friendly person without encroaching on your privacy.
Although the property is situated amongst the "plastic greenhouses" do not let this deter you from visiting this tranquil casa. The costas Salobreña, Almúneca are only a short drive away, or Granada and Alhambra no more than forty minute drive.
I would recommend this property whether you want to use it as a base for sight seeing or visiting the many beaches along the Costa Tropical (which hasn't been ruined by mass tourism) or just chill on your roof or garden terrace within the wonderful gardens that Patrick has created surrounding the Casa Nuevo.
Highly recommendable and we will definately be returning to this hidden paradise.
Excellent location for exploring the south coast
We had the benefit of being able to stay in both Casa Pequena and El Apartamento. Both properties have their advantages and it is difficult to choose between the two. The Casa is quirky being on different levels but seems to have easier access to the gardens. This is really a mindset thing as El Apartamento is really just as accessible but we loved the large roof terrace in the apartment.
A wonderful location for exploring the south coast and Los Alpujarras, especially since the motorway is now complete. Travelling to Malaga airport is now much easier.
The gardens are amazing with lots of little hidden corners - every trip through them seemed to throw up a new, previously undiscovered delight. Night time is especially rewarding with all the garden lighting.
We can't wait to return next year and take advantage of Patrick's great hospitality once again as well as meeting up with his three very friendly dogs.
Ideal holiday destination for those travellers seeking a slower pace of life for a week or more in authentic Andalucia.
To help maintain the sense of calm, privacy and relaxation No infants or children under the age of 16 years permitted to stay.
MOTRIL is found on the lush coastal plain 70kms South from Granada, midway between Malaga and Almeria .
Area known for the market garden growing greenhouses and terraced hillsides, producing all manner of Sub-tropical fruits & vegetables - agriculture is as important as tourism to the local economy.
Motril itself is packed with many restaurants, bars (some nightclubs), as well as plenty of shops and places of historical interest.
The area probably appeals more to the independent traveller, looking to escape the many developments and 'British ghettos' found nearby on the Costa del Sol!
This area still remains Spanish - ideal touring base for Southern Andalucia or for bargain property searches!
Excellent Winter climate and interesting holiday destination - possible to ski one day, beach the next!
Perfect for couples or working trips - Wi-Fi network.
Other Activities: painting, gardening, photography, bird watching, shopping.
