About MARY and GRAHAM
We had spent all our married lives trying to find holiday properties that provide all that we need as a holidaying couple. We have been to lovely villas, cottages & apartments but so many were keen to sleep up to 5+... that was more than we needed! Having discovered the wonders of France, we sought a LIFESTYLE CHANGE of our own. We are lucky enough to be the owners of a beautiful home on the river and to be in a position to offer it for the exclusive use of other couples for whom 'especially for two' will resonate. This we could not do without the amazing support that we get from Luciana, our appointed concierge/housekeeper. Luciana does not stay at the cottage but she does live locally so will be available, should you need her. She will always be there to greet you and to say goodbye but otherwise will leave you to enjoy your holiday alone, unless you need her. Elise will come in to prepare the garden for your arrival but probably before you arrive. Fred will come into clear the pool and set up the robot for the week, but again probably before you arrive. Damien has set up the irrigation system in the garden to give the plants a chance. We love nothing better than sitting by the river watching nature, dining or reading in an idyllic environment! Taking the canoe on the river, enjoying coffees and snacks in charming French villages, walks in the countryside or along sandy beaches are all part of ' THE DREAM WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU!'
MARY and GRAHAM purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why MARY and GRAHAM chose Aubais
We first holidayed in France in 2003 and spent 5 years to 2008 staying at different locations throughout France. BUT THEN ,during the 5 years between 2008 -2013, our holidays were all on different riversides in the South. The unbelievable peace and tranquility of these riverside holidays persuaded us that we should seek to find our own holiday home within such an environment. The fact that it took us 5 years to find this corner of paradise shows how rarely they turn up. The river was our priority, indeed all 'outside demands' were to be most important because 80%+ of our life in France was to be outside, away from crowds. The photographs say more than we can about our riverside home! We are pleased that, this year, we are allowed to show you more than the 20 permitted in previous years Another reason we chose this cottage is that the interior was unlike anything else we had seen. We have sought to preserve and develop all that it ever was. The eclectic mix of antique and new, comfort-concentrated furniture is, we believe, what makes it special. The climate is ideal and the two large cypress trees on the upper level afford shelter from the fiercest sun. When staying around the cottage we tend to spend the greater part of the day on the upper level. When the upper level is in shade later in the afternoon we go down to the lower level to read. Going on the river in the early evening is magical and then there are wonderful walks from the cottage before dinner!! Even after dinner the garden remains a major attraction and the garden lighting allows for all we could want to enjoy in the garden. Then there is the lovely warmth of the interior of the cottage. NEW TV is geared up for UK channels should you wish to catch up with the news etc. The HUMAX box affords you the opportunity to catch up on other favourites, too. THE COTTAGE CONTINUES TO GIVE US THE SAME LEVEL OF JOY AND EXCITEMENT AS WHEN WE PURCHASED IT IN 2014! WE HOPE THAT IT MIGHT AFFECT YOU IN THE SAME WAY!
What makes this Cottage unique
ESPECIALLY FOR TWO!.. is the focus for us as we invite guests to holiday in our French home. We cannot boast of the majestic size of the property but rather we are able to offer assurances that the 130 sq.m. of interior living space has been generously apportioned especially for two people. It is lovely to live by the river, with our own small private pool, in the peace and quiet of the countryside and to walk in the hills from home. However, it is equally important to us that we can drive to the numerous thriving markets in the area, sit and ' people watch' in the coffee shops within villages and towns known throughout the world and enjoy all the beaches a short drive away. We are so lucky to have all these options available to us! We are delighted that all guests so far have shared our enthusiasm for the cottage and its environs. Perhaps you might be our guests at some stage in the future! We shall always seek to make you most welcome!!

Having holidayed in France since the early 1990s, our immediate reaction when seeing this house was wow! As our stay continued we really appreciated all the care and attention to detail that had been given to every item in the house - everything had been thought about. The garden areas, with a choice of sitting locations, was excellent with flowers and shrubs to admire - complete with an automatic watering system. The pool and riverside view completes a house which just keeps giving and giving. There are so many areas to visit especially the Sunday morning market at Calvisson - this is not to be missed - Uzes, Pont du Gard, Sommieres, Arles and many more. Luciana (the housekeeper) is an absolute treasure and a font of knowledge - another asset to providing you with a wonderful holiday. This is a holiday home not to be missed!
Hi Brian and Ann,
We are glad that you have arrived home safely after your extended stay in France. We were pleased to learn that you enjoyed your stay in Orange, after your stay in our cottage..
Before reading this review, we had already been 'bowled over' by the kind things you said in the Visitors Book. Luciana, whom you loved, sent a copy of your page to us as soon as you left the cottage. She was so pleased with what you had said. As you say she is a treasure and loves the cottage as much as we do!
Your review on the Home Away page is fantastic and very, very generous!!
We could not have asked for greater support!
Of course you will be welcome return guests should you wish to return, some time in the future.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH AGAIN,
Mary and Graham
A French Gem.
This property at Aubais (Nr Nimes) is an absolute gem.
The property itself is well maintained and furnished, with excellent facilities provided by the owners - English satellite TV, Wi fi, bluetooth etc.
The location by the river is idyllic, with facilities for kayaking provided.
The location is peaceful and rural, but with easy access to all the local sights - Nimes, Pont de Gard, Montpellier etc., and within 3/4 hours of Nimes airport.
The local agent (Luciano), is very knowledgeable and helpful in all matters relating to the property, and the local area.
We had a great holiday at this property, and would recommend it to anyone wishing to visit the Languedoc area of France.
Thank you Peter and Linda for this very supportive review. You could not have been more generous in your praise of the cottage and of Luciana. The area around us very special and we know how lucky we are! We are thrilled that prospective guests will be able to see such positive comments. We are extremely grateful to you both.
Lovely retreat with much to visit.
Excellently presented cottage located down a quiet road. Overlooking the river with access to the two person canoe - fabulous. Walks abound and if you want bustle, Montpellier and the coast are a short drive away as are a host of Roman remains including the Pont du Gard. We spent a lot of time in Sommieres, a lovely small French town which is a five miles’ drive. All in all, a lovely holiday.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review, Peter. We very much appreciate it and are certain that prospective guests will find your observations helpful.
We are thrilled that you so liked the cottage and its environs and that you found so many places of interest nearby. Most pleasing for us is that you had a lovely holiday here.
You will be very welcome as return guests should you choose to come back to this region in the future.
Best wishes to you and Evelyn.

Best Best Holiday Ever!
‘Especially for Two’ is the perfect description for Riverside Cottage and following our stay here in 2017 we described it in our review as our ‘Best Holiday Ever’. Well Graham and Mary, we are pleased to say that you and your team in Aubais, (Luciana, who keeps the house spotlessly clean, Fred the Pool man, who keeps the pool sparkling and clear and Marcella who keeps the gardens green and lush) have exceeded our expectations to provide us with the ‘Best Best Holiday Ever!
All we can add for anyone looking looking for a holiday here (who has not stayed before) is that the HomeAway description is 100% accurate and the number of previous visitors who have given it 5 stars just speaks for itself. The local area will also provide you with everything needed for a perfect holiday - lazy rivers, gourmet restaurants, sleepy villages, sandy beaches and markets selling delicious peaches!
We look forward to returning in 2019!
Hi Ian and Nicola,
Thank you so much for this very generous review of your most recent stay. You could not have been kinder!!
We read it on the same day that Luciana sent us a copy of your 'A to Z of our stay' review in the Visitors Book. We shall write that review up in full on our page ( hopefully) ......it was indeed different and very clever...it must have taken a long time to work out. SO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THAT TOO!
The fact that you are returning next year for 3 weeks is the best compliment you can pay to the cottage, its environs, the team in France and us.
YOU WILL BE MOST WELCOME RETURN GUESTS FOR AS LONG AS YOU CHOOSE.
Character cottage in peaceful location
Mary and Graham have done a fantastic job in providing first class accommodation "especially for two". We had a fantastic holiday as the cottage is furnished to such a high standard in a French style. The space works really well with the lounge diner and the well equipped kitchen, the contemporary bathroom with wet room style shower and wonderful bath and the comfy bedroom. There is a wealth of wildlife in and around the relaxing garden. We watched a red squirrel scamper up a nearby tree, a real treat from our grey variety here. Sit on the bench by the river and contemplate the view in the early morning, a calming experience, and a chance to while away a few minutes. We enjoyed eating out at night at the table facing the river, watching the night draw in. Mary and Graham have placed appropriate seating around the garden to enjoy the scenery and the space especially the slow flowing river. The area is wonderful with lots of pretty villages to visit including Sommieres which became our local town as supermarket there. We enjoyed the beaches towards Grand Travers and L'Espiguette. Luciana is very helpful and came partway through our stay to change the bedding and brought yet another bottle of red. In fact Mary and Graham have really thought about the needs of their guests and we felt very much at home and didn't want to return home, but we will be back again next year. Thanks so much, Nerys and Phil
Dear Nerys and Phil,
Thank you so much for this very generous review of your two week stay at the cottage. We are obviously pleased that you enjoyed everything about your holiday so much that you have booked another 2 weeks in 2019.
Your kind comments about the cottage were gratefully received and we are delighted that you loved all of the other things that we can take no credit for, The red squirrel that frequents the pond is a delight as are the rest of its family when they appear. The influence of the river was what drew us to this cottage, we are pleased that it had a similar attraction for you.
You will both be very welcome return guests in 2019.
Best wishes from Mary and Graham.
Five star accommodation in a wonderful location
If you are looking for somewhere to unwind and relax then look no further- this is definitely the place.
Graham and Mary have created a wonderful home here - indeed it is a home from home -everything has been thoughtfully considered , to the interior decoration, the equipment in the Kitchen and the luxurious bathroom. Five star accommodation indeed. The attention to detail is wonderful , including detailed descriptions of places to visit and local walks all to help you make the most of the area and your holiday.
Luciana was very welcoming and friendly and ensured our stay was worry free.
Prior to our holiday we had made plans to visit numerous places of interest and the local markets but found ourselves repeatedly drawn to the beautiful garden and varied wildlife , which created the perfect haven to relax , read a book and take it all in. Consequently we will now have to return to see if we can manage to visit some of the places we missed out on this time - what a shame!!!
Thank you Graham and Mary for providing us with a wonderful place to stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday here and be in no doubt we will be returning.
Ian & Ali
Hi Ian and Ali,
Thank you so very much for this wonderful feedback.
Thank you particularly for the very generous comments about the cottage and its gardens
We are just thrilled that you had a wonderful holiday.
Indeed we are pleased that you did not manage to achieve all that you had planned before you set off......it is great that you will be coming back to do more!
You will be very welcome return guests ...whenever the time is right for you.
Thank you again.
Now enjoy this Mediterranean summer in UK and enjoy England's semi-final on Wednesday!
Best wishes to you both
Mary and Graham
Special interest holidays:
We are loath to suggest that this particular house alongside the river should only appeal to a 'special interest group'. Its unique location means that it will attract as many non specialists as those fishermen who will want to take advantage of their own canoe on the river!
We love walking in the open countryside and our cottage serves as the starting point for at least 5 different walks...there are rock climbing areas also. It is a relatively short walk into AUBAIS for the small market each Tuesday, the bar, the restaurant, bakery and other useful outlets for holidaymakers. The ancient town of Sommieres is @ a 15 minute drive and provides a range of restaurants, bars and coffee shops as well as open markets during the summer. Intermarche, Lidl and all other types of shops as well as its historic and natural attractions are an added bonus. A very helpful Tourist Office is a must for all guests.
The same walkways would be excellent cycle paths for anybody coming with their own bikes!
The local cliffs that give our road the name Chemin de la Roque are climbed by ourselves during walks and by more expert climbers than ourselves.
Just sitting by the river with binoculars has proved a major pass-time for us and, based on our guests' reviews, with all who have been our guests over the past few years.
We had waited for five years for this house and we certainly have no specialist interest....... other than being in/on the river, eating out in the warm sunshine, reading on comfy recliners, even at night under garden lights, the walking in the open countryside and having a lovely house to retire to!
This was another major attraction for us. To be able to get to a range of spacious Mediterranean beaches within a reasonable driving time is a realisation of a major dream!. We can drive to La Grande Motte in 1/2 hour, then walk in the sun with feet in the sea for miles,
Nearest beaches are: La Grande Motte & Le Grau du Roi. L'Espiguette, near Aigues Mortes stretches for kilometre after kilometre of fine sandy dunes. The vendors advised us that Sete and St. Marie de la Mer are well known for their wonderful quayside restaurants! We have now visited enough times to confirm this ourselves!!
We have always driven down in the past. It is wonderful driving on the motorways in France! The toll roads are worth the money, if getting down quickly is the aim. One night's hotel stay on the journey may be necessary, depending on the time you get on the Tunnel train or ferry. The house is 10 mins. from autoroute A9. A car is essential anyway!
Flights to Montpellier, Nimes and Bezier are available from different operators.
House is @20mins from Nimes and Montpellier.
1hr 20 mins from Beziers
Most immediate perhaps: 1 km from the village of Aubais, 8km from the mediaeval town of Sommieres, 25km from the unmissable Montpellier, 20km from Nimes, 70km from Avignon,40km from Uzes, 58km from Arles, and 63km from Pont du Gard.
We shall leave booklets on possible visits for you on the shelf of the bibliotheque in the cottage, without wishing to be prescriptive in any way. We shall forward to you, in advance of your stay, a 4 page document of places we always try to visit during our stay at the cottage. Past guests have found these useful!
The housekeeper/ Concierge: IS NOT AT THE HOUSE ALL OF THE TIME!!
Luciana lives locally and knows the area very well including the eateries. We have been thrilled to read, in the Visitors Book, of the warmth of character that Luciana has demonstrated to our guests.
When previous guests have left, Luciana will have spent 5 hours cleaning and putting out fresh items for you both in readiness for your stay. She will be there to meet and greet, be available to assist you in need and to see you off on the day of departure. For guests staying for two weeks she will arrange a time with you for her to be able to come to change sheets etc.
OTHERWISE THE COTTAGE IS ALL YOURS FOR THE DURATION.
The Gard region of the Languedoc is perhaps Southern France's best kept secret: Sleepy villages of sun warmed stone houses with red tiled roofs. Consequently it is unspoilt by mass tourism. There is, all round you, magnificent scenery and plenty of opportunity for rambles among herb scented hills, straight from the house or elsewhere. To have your own river is special but there are many other deep gorges tumbling into cool, inviting rivers. The River Gardon and its gorges, are nearby, with swimming, canoeing and more riverside walks. We saw beavers and 20 cormorants roosting on just one tree on the banks near Collias when we walked to the famous Pont du Gard ( We shall leave details of this particular walk since it is so special)
WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY SAY ENOUGH IN THIS SPACE TO DO JUSTICE TO WHAT ABOUNDS! YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELVES. IF YOU DO COME WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL LOVE THE COTTAGE AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY FULLY.
