Gite Corbiere Sleeps 6 (3 Bedrooms)
Les Arques Gites are adjacent to a small vineyard that stretches to the Canal du Midi near to the picturesque villages of Homps and Olonzac. This is a quintessentially French location in the sunny Languedoc region, within a short drive of the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean near Narbonne and the spectacular Cité of Carcassonne. The property dates back to the 1850's and the renovation has retained the traditional character of the stone barn with oak windows, doors and the original timber roof beams, combined with modern facilities to make your stay comfortable. The excellent location allows guests to abandon the car and ramble for 15mins along the Canal to Homps to enjoy the scenery & numerous restaurants or, in the opposite direction to Olonzac to experience the colourful local market, bars, restaurants, tennis courts and park. Venture further afield on cycles or in the car to explore the numerous vinyards and Cathar castles.

We stayed as a family of 5 in the larger gite in August with children aged 4, 10 and 12. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed - Wendy was a lovely host and the gite was amazing with everything you need for a perfect holiday. The children loved the pool, which has security fencing - perfect for our adventurous 4 year old boy! The pool area is beautiful with plenty of sun loungers for everyone and is in the sun until late into the afternoon. The older two loved the English TV and the wifi for chilling out during the hot afternoons and we spent some great family evenings outside on the lovely patio area playing the many games available. The location is perfect. It's a short, enjoyable walk into Olonzac, with plenty of wildlife spotting to keep younger ones entertained! Olonzac itself is lovely with a fantastic Tuesday market, some great bars and restaurants and a lovely play park for smaller children. We enjoyed cafe de la poste for afternoon drinks and had a lovely meal at la citadelle restaurant, which served a good variety of food (including pizza for fussy children!). The owner spoke very little English but was very friendly and welcoming and did her best to help translate the menu! The canal is in view of the gite and makes for a lovely walk. My son loved watching the barges and even got to help with the locks a couple of times! Homps has a variety of places to eat and has a very relaxed, laid back feel. Perfect for warm evenings. One of our highlights was the swimming lake which we visited several times. It took about half an hour to walk (with children), but has a free car park which we also used. The lake is beautiful! The children enjoyed the inflatables which cost 7 Euros to play on for half an hour, there was a designated swimming area (with lifeguards), a water sports area (for windsurfing etc) and a cafe which served drinks and snacks (the food was lovely). The beach area is pebbled so you do need shoes to walk around, but for us the lack of complaining about sand from the children was bliss!
For days out Narbonne and Carcassonne are only a short drive away and both very worth visiting, especially la Cite in Carcassonne. Wendy has supplied all the information needed to choose days out - there is so much to do in the area for all ages. From age 4 to 47 this has unanimously been one of our favourite holidays - perfect accommodation, beautiful surroundings and a great location - we will most definitely be back!
A wonderful renovation has provided a comfortable haven in a great location. Swimming pool, bicycles available for our use, and only a 15 minute walk to both Homps or Olanzac to shop for food, or eat out at a number of restaurants, added to our holiday experience! We loved walking or biking along the Canal du Midi, on the doorstep, and watching the entertainment of boats coming and going through the locks. The boulangerie, just a quick bike ride of five minutes, provided pastries for breakfast most mornings. Wendy is a wonderful host who made us so welcome.
Our Site and the linked facilities, including pool and bikes were excellent. The host was really welcoming and helpful in giving ideas and us knowing what to do. It was all to a very high standard and in an excellent location, near the canal and two local towns.
Fabulous gite located in a very beautiful area
The gite is situated in the beautiful village of Homps with its many bars and restaurants, there is so much to do here from walking, cycling, visiting hill top villages, markets and night time entertainment at nearby Olonzsac (which is walkable from the gite) and of course a refreshing dip in the private pool at the end of the day. Our favourite day was borrowing bikes and cycling along the canal stopping for a leisurely lunch at one of the restaurants on the tow path. The gite has everything that you need plus more ! And John was there to answer any questions we had. I thoroughly recommend it unreservedly.
A great place to stay with wonderful hosts
We stayed at Gite Corbiere for 2 weeks and really enjoyed every minute of it. The accommodation is clean and well equipped and (very important for me) the beds were comfortable too. The swimming pool was kept clean. The location is very relaxing. The villages of Homps and Olonzac are both in easy walking distance, and the canal makes for pleasant country walks too. Of various Gite holidays we've had in the past (in france), this has been the best. I also agree with all the other superlative review comments you see for this place!
Clean, comfortable and relaxed
We booked both properties as a large family group and were very happy with our choice. I stayed in the smaller 2 bedroom gite which was spacious and very clean and comfortable with a lovely view of the canals from the windows. We found Wendy had thought of everything her visitors might need to make their stay comfortable and relaxed. The kitchen amenities were well thought out for self catering and the selection of books, videos, table tennis and swimming pool mean you don't need to go anywhere. We walked to the bakery and into Homps every day where there were some good restaurants and cafes. We hope to return again.
The golden, sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are only a 45 minute drive away, extending all the way down to the Spanish border. Nearby Narbonne and Gruissan are lively resorts and world class windsurfing and sailing is available at Leucate.
Lakeside beaches are also available at Carassonne (30 min drive) and also swimming and private windsurfing and sailing at Lac Jouarres (2 km away).
There are several airports in this region:
Carcassonne - 35mins away
Beziers - 45mins
Perpignan - 50mins
Montpellier - 90mins
Toulouse - 90mins
Nimes - 2hrs away
Girona (Spain) - 2hrs away
Car hire is essential as there is very limited public transport.
Many of you may prefer to drive and the routes from Calais or Zeebrugge take around 10 hours on an unbroken run.
Carcassonne - (30mins) Has a wonderful Disney-like fortified Medieval Cité.
Narbonne - (30mins) Another vibrant Mediterranean city, built by the Romans has a cathedral and 100 yr old market hall to buy or consume local produce.
Minerve - (15mins) A historic village built at the meeting point of two gorges.
There are several Cathar castles to be found in the Corbieres Mountains about 90 -120 minutes drive.
Olonzac is an easy 15min walk or short drive down a quiet country lane past the 'Cave' (call in for quality local wine). It has a beautiful park with tennis courts, several cafes, bars, restaurants, weekly market and shops including a supermarket on the edge of the town.
Homps is a relaxing 15min walk along the banks of the Canal du Midi or a short drive past the local Boulangerie at the end of our lane. Homps is the old Port du Minervois and has a number of Canal-side restaurants. Boat tours and hire are available. Continue walking through Homps and you arrive at the lake.
Lac Jouarres is a couple of minutes away by car for swimming, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. There is a lakeside restaurant making this a lovely place to spend a few hours. The walk around the lake takes about an hour.
The tow path along the Canal is also a popular cycling route and the more energetic can reach Carcassonne in under 2 hours. You can venture off the Canal into glorious hilly countryside littered with vineyards and rocky outcrops seeded with wild Rosemary and other Mediterranean plants.
We provide literature and advice on tourist attractions, popular and secret destinations, wine caves and activities to help you make the most of your time in glorious Languedoc.
